Have had my mac for about 6 months now. It is the best computer I have ever owned. I say this now but will probably regret it - I don't think I will upgrade to another computer. I think If the next iteration has something I cannot live without like a 20 hour battery or something like that, then maybe. I am about to drop some nice change on a 240gb ssd so this computer has been quite an investment.

I'm still using my late 2006 MBP. I've had it for more than 4 years now. It's been upgraded a bit, with 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and OSX Snow Leopard. Works perfectly for all my needs, including audio and video editing (non HD), and some occasional WoW gaming.

I don't plan to buy a new one for at least another year. I'm waiting for the intel Ivy Bridge chips.

This late 2006 MBP has literally thousands of hours of run time on it. I use it every day of the week, for several hours each day. It's been 100% reliable - I've never had to take it in for repairs. Not to sound too fanboyish, but this is the nicest and the most reliable computer I have ever owned - build quality is head and shoulders above any cheap plastic peecee notebook. When I finally replace it, it will definitely be with another MBP.

My experience is that the hardware gets "out of date" mostly just in user's head, typically after reading the specs of the newer model.

Your 2010 MBP will offer you a great value for long time to come. You will be running your favorite apps on it and unless you are a true power user, the hardware will not be your limiting factor. I have yet to come across an app or service on my 2010 MBP which would not run well because of that old line of Intel CPU.

Mine is one of the original Core 2 Duo 15" models from 2007 and I don't plan on upgrading. It replaced my original MacBook Pro from 06 and I am still pretty pleased with its performance. Once I got it to its 3GB maximum on RAM and put in a bigger 7200rpm drive with Snow Leopard, it doesn't leave me wishing for more. Open yours up and enjoy it. Its going to be outdated someday no matter what, so why leave it in the box?

OPEN IT!!!!

My MBP was a 2007 model. It worked like day one. Was amazing. I JUST bought a new MBP 15" i5 and the ONLY reason I did this was, well, I guess 2 reasons....

1. I had the 8600m GT card (the big class action suit yadda yadda) so I was worried about imminent death

2. I was a moron and never bought apple care, so I was out of warranty and it was still covered for a little longer (or would have been).

Open it, you'll never notice the C2D. That for sure won't be your bottleneck, it'll be your ram that's the bottleneck IMO.

Mine is one of the original Core 2 Duo 15" models from 2007
Actually, the first C2D models were the late 2006 models. October '06 IIRC is when they were released. So you have either a late 2006 model, or you have one of the mid-2007 refresh models.

Why would I hate it?

As long as you don't develop an OCD problem like 90% of the people in this forum then you're perfectly fine with every Apple products.

Not another should I open it thread.

Sheesh, its a great computer. Open and enjoy it.

My 15" is more than 2 years old, it's still one of the pre unibodies. I bought it when the unibodies came out and got a huge discount. I have to say I like the old design more, with the Firewire 400 + 800 ports, the expresscard slot, the all silver keyboard, etc. It's not much slower than newer machines and I'll keep it until it breaks.

I enjoy the feel of those keyboards more then I do the chiclet style keys on the unibody's. Those older keyboards on your's are much more comfortable and have a softer feel to them.

Ive got the 2010 13" 2.4Ghz 4Gb RAM 250Gb model.

I hate it. It's only a week old and the HD has failed, apple have quoted me a fortnight to repair it, which is rubbish cos I'm sure its a half hour job. But I wouldn't compare that to the other MBP's, I'm sure this is an isolated incident, and when it's fixed I think I'll probably love it.

My currently Macbook is the late 2006 model, with the 2Ghz and 2Gb RAM and I absolutely love it. It's still fast and will probably continue outperforming many other Windows models for a few years yet.

my macbook pro is one week old (got it on Saturday the 18th)
now do i love it or hate it.
hmm.. i came to mac from PC, and i still use my PC too.
but either way... I LOVE IT!!

the keyboard is much better to type on, and there are less typos for me (i type fast but sometimes have a lot of typos :p)

one con though i have is the heat in the bottom plate. it irks and quirks me, but oh well its a notebook, its meant to get hot :( sigh... but i still love it..
the C2D in the MBP competes with my PC QuadCore! and im fairly impressed

to be honest, C2D is not outdated. it is the 26th of December. i have 5 days until my C2D becomes outdated, and i intend to enjoy those moments :)
as far as 2011 goes, pssh who cares.. i feel bad for those who are waiting. they are waiting like lovers for a piece of technology to emerge and give them presence  :D

here i am enjoying my "outdated" model and there they are moaning and groaning, waiting for their "love" to emerge. haha so ill have my laughs for now, but its a computer so even when the new MBP comes out with better features and cool design, etc. i really wont care cuz i got to enjoy my MBP earlier than they did :p

PS. this is for kicks and laughs.. if i offend anyone, deeply, truly sorry :p [not sure how convincing :p is but it a dude sticking out his tongue, its hilarious!)

now lets get serious OP.
what is wrong with you? wow. im disappointed, truly. You dare leave a MBP lying in the box and WAIT for ONE MONTH!!!!! [lol sry im in a happy, jovial mood right now, this is also for kicks and laughs :p)

ok now seriously lets get serious (no joke :|)
umm., i think you should just open it up and start using it. we dont know when its going to come out, we have no clue except for SB and some other things, but still i doubt that anything will appear in a month.. the chances are really rare and slim... trust me rip that box off your MBP and use it like no other! the C2D may not be as "amazing" as the SB, but its still 1 hell of a machine... besides people still sue intel celeron chips today even though those are horrible and ridiculously basic.. so technically

Great great post......I so agree......be happy with what you have when you have it......There will always be the next great thing out there.

Sure, there will be a few new things coming out with the new MB line......but the older machines work just fine, and do most of what you need them to do just fine. I have found that it takes about 3-4 years of so for the technology changes to make upgrading worthwhile.

So you wont be disappointed with the machine you have right now in the box. And except for knowing that it is a C2D chip vs an I5 or SB(2011), it serve you well for a long time.

I would say that if you're waiting for a laptop that will last you 4 years, it's better to hold out til SB. If we were waiting for arrandale still (knowing what we know about THAT upgrade) then I would say go for the C2D. But at this point its so late in the game for the core 2 processors, it just makes the most sense to wait. The SB upgrade may not be amazing, and I fully expect Apple to let many people down, as they always do, but we're close enough to where you should wait. 4 years is a long time with technology.

EDIT: as for your question, I have a mid-2010 i7 15" and love it. But at the same time, I am considering upgrading to SB. I bought this laptop with the intent to keep it for a long time as well, just like you, but I feel as though this year's model really wasn't the one to get. I think the next upgrade will be more worth it, I just can't decide whether or not to upgrade or stay with what I have. Either way, I love my MBP and it does everything I need it to do (I just hate the weak graphics/crappy switching)

mine is around a year old, i got it when the mbp were updated; and i expect it to last me till 2017, but then again im selling this when they get updated and ill buy the updated ones.

The only thing I hate about my 08 MBP is the CPU downclocking frequently due to overheating and no hardware acceleration for Flash. Eating half my CPU just to watch a 720p video is a joke.

While I don't need or want to play games on my laptop, I most definitely could use a quad core with 8 gigs of RAM. It is quite a joke though how Apple expects us to pay $2k for a laptop yet refuses to increase the thickness .2 inches or remove the disc tray to accommodate the increased heat and bigger battery for a quad core.

2 months old - Why wait for new models with new bugs?

I bought my refurb MBP a few months ago, a few days before a refresh bump from 2.66Ghz to 2.8 for the 17" models. I didn't even blink, since I love my Mac sooooo much.

If there is a newer model on the way, even with the major MBP upgrade rumors (quad core, Sandy Bridge, etc.), it always takes a few months for even Apple to work out the new bugs.

I don't want to wait for that after shelling out a couple of grand for a spanking new model.

I have a first gen unibody MBP. I love it. Was going to get a new iMac, but decided to upgrade to 6gb of ram instead. Should be like a new machine.

It's tough and plenty fast enough. Even with my 2gb of ram I can game and I can edit hd video. I love the portability too. Sometimes would rather have a 17" and sometimes a 13". The 15" fits perfectly in the middle though.

In short, open it. You'll love it.

4 year old first gen core duo x1600 mbp here.

Lets just say that I own a Envy 17 3D with an i7 quad - and I always find myself back to using the mbp. I will only use the Envy for playing intensive games.

Hell I even play WoW Cata on the mbp, and it still plays surprisingly well. Especially since I just repasted her.

my macbook pro is from early 2008 its athe 2.66ghz 200gb Hd 4gb ram anti glare 15''

So far I can say I love this thing it seems to be bullet proof. Only issues so far superdrive failed and new battery and new magsafe. I have apple care so all of these have been replaced for free.
I am just waiting to see if my graphics card is gonna fail just like everyone elses seems to do. I have about 6 months left on my warranty.

But over all amazing macbook pro.

I've had mine for about 5 months now. I absolutely love it. Honestly, I don't care if it's more expensive and/or the specs are worse, I'm NEVER buying a PC laptop again. Amazing looks, functionality, battery life and customer service. I am very pleased, and believe it was worth every penny.

So I am just wondering if you guys are still loving your "outdated" machines? They still alive and kicking? Any chance that they can support video editing?

I bought my refurb MBP in late Nov or early Dec 2007. I can't find a reason to replace it. I had an issue with one of the boards going in it about a year ago, AppleCare took care of that (but it took a week, plus waiting in line twice at the store). My old PC shop down the street used to turn my warranty gear around in a day or two, but I was spending quite a bit there back then too.

I use mine for general web, itunes, and some gaming. I see 50+ fps in TF2, so I can't complain about a three year old machine based on that.

I've had my 17" MBP from April 09. It is still an absolutely great machine and looks and works like brand new. The 15" MBP is probably almost 3 years old, and it is the same story there. I haven't done any video on the 15" MBP, but I did some on its bigger brother and it can handle it no problem.

I've had my 13" MBP for exactly 12 HOURS and i love it to death.
It's a little tricking getting down all the keyboard shortcuts, but overall, I find it to be much more economical than all the other laptops I've had in the past.

I have a first generation macbook that I've used the past 4 1/2 years. It still runs great and I have gone without any problems whatsoever. I still do video editing and movie conversions with handbrake all the time with no issues.
