Netflix, Hulu, and Spotify. I have all three services and that will cover most of my media. The only time I've put movies on my Touch was when I was traveling. I do have 13GBs of music on there as well that I took offline from Spotify. Won't be an issue on the iPad.

You prefer streaming movies. You don't plan on putting any music on it. And you aren't a huge gamer.

You're def better off getting the 32gig. Take the $100 you save and buy a few more apps or some nice accessories.

Anyone suggesting buying the 16GB is just plain dumb. With larger apps, better pictures/videos, and full HD videos, you need at least 32. I used to say that I'd switch out movies and other media when I needed too, but it becomes a real bitch.

I'm going with 64, and that way I can have it all on my iPad at once with minimal management.

Way overstated. The way you use your iPad is not the way all will use their iPad. There are plenty of people that use their iPad for web browsing, video streaming, book & mag reading, and maybe have a couple dozen apps -- many with a small footprint. I have many friends and family very happy w/ 16GB.

I'm not disagreeing that 32 or 64 is be a better choice for some, just that there is a legitimate, intelligent case to be made for suggesting the 16Gb model.

Simple math. If you have 64GB and need only 40GB for stuff, you are in a lot better place than still needing that 40GB, but having only 32GB available. Then you would have wished you spent that extra $100.

With children, vey easy to use 64GB when videos, films & photos are inc. ESP if HD content used.

Even apps are totalling 15 GB now and downloaded books etc. don't help. Could actively manage more via iTunes but don't have the time. TBH, would have cheered if a 128GB had been released.
As a parent, its depressing how much stuff I CANT put on my iPad. :D

Im actually considering getting an iPad 2 for the toddlers simply because their books, kids shows, movies and learning games take up so much space on mine.

This is true. There were some stats released a couple weeks ago that suggested that most users have a tiny footprint. Anecdotally, I know 11 others with an iPad and none of them have more than 2 Pages of apps. 90% of their use is just web browsing/youtubing/facebooking from the couch.

This is reason I did not sell my iPad 2. The amount of space the kids' books and educational apps take up is ridiculous. The amount of knowledge they have gained from these apps is impressive, so the decision to pass the iPad 2 down to them instead of selling it was an easy one.

I can't wait for my iPad to arrive. I bought a gumdrop case for my iPad 2 since my kids were using it more often and I am SO sick of this big ugly thing, lol! It's perfect for them but certainly not for me.

I couldn't.

I don't see why people would have music on the iPad, I have my iPhone for this. I only put movies on if I'm going away somewhere, or if I know I'm going to be sat in a car or train for over an hour. There's no other time I would watch movies on my ipad, I'll watch everything at home on my desktop.
It also takes time to convert files from avi/mkv to mp4 so they can go on the iPad.

Could use several GB on games/apps but that wouldn't even be 10GB. I decided to buy the 32GB version this time to be safe. I know some games are already over 500MB, need a increase in file size as well I imagine so..

Since I have an ipod classic for music, the only reason i would get the 64gb is for movies and music videos but even than i might just buy the 64gb because i know that i bought the best available at that time.

I'm debating to buy the 32GB or 64GB iPad 3 Wifi.

I want to buy the 32GB - $619. But if I add an extra $100, I could get twice the amount of GB (good sales strategy there, Apple!) so it would be $719. I only want to upgrade to get my money's worth. Anyways, after tax it will be slightly over $810.

I have an iPod Touch 32GB and I used 10GB of it, all on music. Nothing else. No apps, games, whatever. But I feel like if I had an iPad, I would download more apps and games. But still, I don't think I would use up all 64GB. (Maybe, you never know I guess!)

Anyway, my question is, how much GBs do you guys currently have on your iPad, and what do you use it on?

Hi. I'm not sure if you'll benefit completely.. But why don't you try using more cloud storage and save the $100+tax?
iTunes Match has helped me so much! So that saves me around 4-5Gb in music.
And now, with Movies in the Cloud too. It's going to help my new iPad a lot!

I was thinking of a 64Gb because I assume app sizes will go up, but with iCloud... It helps a lot!

I run around 4-5Gb on Music.
10+Gb on Apps.
7-8Gb videos and movies.

So I just swap and change through iCloud/iTunes Match.

It is easy to fill up 64GB.

  • 5GB in music
  • 10 to 15GB in videos
  • 25 to 30GB in apps
  • 5GB in photos
  • add in a few books

I use iTunes for videos and apps. So filling up 64GB is easy, I would have bought a 128GB model if I could. I have had a 64GB iPad 1 and iPad 2, and they are constantly full. 1080P and retina graphics is only going to make this worse.

I would love to see Apple expand upward next year.

I can see people who don't use iTunes video or a lot of apps buying the 16GB, but it would be very limited. 32GB would probably be the best choice if you don't plan to purchase a large amount of video.

Streaming is nice and all that but even with a tethering plan on my iPhone I only have 4GB per month to play with and it so easy to go over that.

I've had (well, will come next Friday) all three iPad's and I've gone up in storage capacity with each generation. The 16Gb was fine for everyday use (I stream movies from the iMac via Air Video) but left me struggling for space when loading stuff up for travelling and I was having to be fairly ruthless with app management. The 32Gb did travelling just fine and gave me a lot more flexibility but struggled when I started seriously getting into photography and used it as a portable 'first pass' platform.

Since I've just gone to a new DSLR (16MP v 12) and as I'm expecting to use the iPad far more for books and other text content with the new retina display, plus the expected bump in app sizes to support that display, it makes sense to go for the 64Gb option. I doubt I'll fill it and realistically will probably end up with something like 10Gb free most of the time but there will be times I need that extra capacity.

Easy for me to fill up because of AppShopper. I constantly add new releases and games to my wish list, and then I get emailed when a game goes on sale. I pick up the game at 99 cents, and then get too busy to play it. Multiply that by 2 years of iPad usage (original iPad, iPad 2, and soon the new one), and I have WAY more games than I even have time to play.

My goal this week is to slim down to only the games i actually play on my iPad 2, so I can have more room for movies and video/music editing. If I haven't played it in 2 months, I can keep it on my MBP until I have time to play it.

My other storage hog item is books -- I have probably 200 PDF's of software development & programming books, and at least 100 or so novels. The books take up a lot less space than all the games I don't play, so I'm going on a game cutting spree. :)

I've since made myself stop buying games like crazy, but I still have a wicked backlog of titles (esp RPG's) that i need to start playing, haha.

It's interesting to see how everyone uses the space on their iPads.

Ever since iCloud, my 64gb has went down to an 8gb iPad. Just in case I got the 32gb.

I've had 32 GB models for both versions of the iPad. It was until this year that I started feeling like I needed 32. The primary reason is photographs and apps for me. With the 1080p video on the iPhone 4S, even 1 minute videos take up 200+ MB. That adds up quickly. Apps, and the data for those apps, are also getting larger and larger. So, after photos and apps, I barely have enough room for the occasional movie or TV show.

Ideally I'd like to have most of my favorite movies/shows, most frequently listened to music, all my apps and all my photos on the iPad.

That's all fine and dandy...for the past two generations. 16GB is going to be eaten up largely by apps, and quick. If you're planning on keeping the device for more than a year, then 16GB shouldn't even be considered, regardless of how you use it.

You have an iPod Touch and no Apps??? What the?

This will be my first iPad, and I bought the 64GB. I just don't feel like iCloud is quite ready for primetime yet. Plus with data plans and caps, all that streaming will add up quickly if you're away from Wi-Fi.

I could be wrong and never fill mine, but at least for the next year or so, I'm still going with physical storage over iCloud for all of my media.

40+GB music library... thousands of photos... plus a couple movies and there it is. Plus the 64GB model is actually under 60 I believe.

I ordered the 64gb cause I had the 16gb iPad 2 and it filled all the way up with just a few apps (not that many) couldn't fit any music or videos on it. The 16gb is pointless it's kinda like a 4gb iPhone would be.

Yup 2 seasons of Castle filled it up lol

When I first got mine I didn't think it was possible to fill up my 64gb. Fast forward 5 months of ownership and I've crossed the halfway mark and sitting around 40gb used. It's a pain to have to resync every time you want to add content.

If you can afford the higher capacity and can see yourself utilizing it, go for it!

It's quite easily actually: (This is what I put on my iPad)

3-4 GB of Apps
1-2 GB of Music
32 GB of Digital Copies from Blu-Rays
7 GB of Photos
10 GB of home videos

Would've loved a 128GB model this year, oh well. :)

How do you get your blu-rays onto your iPad? Or any DVD for that matter? Is there a certain program you need? Thanks

Get 64GB

I had a 64GB iPad since it was released. It was always full (just mailed it today to the buyer, now to last a week without it...).

My iTunes folder is on an external hard drive and is just under 700 GBs. I am in the military and was deployed a few times. The only way to watch my favorite TV shows without waiting a year was iTunes. So I have over 400 TV shows, a few hundred movies, and thousands of songs.

My iPad held my music videos, apps, a few movies and TV shows. I would go out for a week at a time (or more) and it was a lot easier to just bring my iPad (since you have to carry everything you take). If you travel on business it is similar. Put half a dozen TV shows on an iPad for a few hours of entertainment, and that is several gigs gone.

My apps take several gigs themselves since I have over a hundred books on iBooks and several magazines on Zinio (and now newsstand). With the retina display coming out, it will probably cut down significantly on what I can take on trips.
