My 64GB iPod touch's storage breaks down as such:
17.70GB Audio
11.00GB Videos
00.08GB Photos
09.30GB Apps
00.02GB Books
01.05GB Other
18.90GB Free (note that this implies about 6GB for the system)

Note if I decide to get an iPad, I probably wouldn't keep the audio on it, but I'm sure I would increase on Photos, Books, and definitely Videos. One 90min movie that is 1960X1080 could take up as much as 10GB maybe more. Thus, you can only store so many videos that would really make use of the retina display.

I'm really disappointed that there won't be a 128GB version of the New iPad. Apple seems to be trying to push people to the iCloud, but for those like me that don't want or need the 4G LTE version, don't want to add another monthly bill for 4G access, and simply don't want to store my files on the iCloud this was a bad decision. This has put a hold on my plans to get my 1st iPad.

I think 16GB would suit me just fine when I eventually take the plunge with an iPad, just rotate the content

That's nothing. My music library is over 256gig. I'd need half a terabyte to store all my media on an iPad.

Cool, I wasn't claiming to have the biggest library.. just showing how I would use 64GB (or 57GB whatever it's formatted to)

That's all fine and dandy...for the past two generations. 16GB is going to be eaten up largely by apps, and quick. If you're planning on keeping the device for more than a year, then 16GB shouldn't even be considered, regardless of how you use it.

B.S. and totally misses my point. Meat and potato iPad Apps like, say TuneIn Radio or Yelp are not going to balloon in size just because they make them Retina compatible. For people that just use their iPad to do things like stream, Web browse, read, and only have 20 apps (yes, such people exist) 16GB is still going to be plenty for them. To say this style of user shouldn't consider the 16GB is just ludicrous.

Currently using 6 gig of a 16 gig. I keep my music on my phone and after watching tv/movie I always delete (I rarely watch something more than once). I'll be sticking with 16 gig when I upgrade.

6 gig = 2 gig work files, 2 gig (2,000) photos, 2 gig apps.

I'm debating to buy the 32GB or 64GB iPad 3 Wifi.

I want to buy the 32GB - $619. But if I add an extra $100, I could get twice the amount of GB (good sales strategy there, Apple!) so it would be $719. I only want to upgrade to get my money's worth. Anyways, after tax it will be slightly over $810.

I have an iPod Touch 32GB and I used 10GB of it, all on music. Nothing else. No apps, games, whatever. But I feel like if I had an iPad, I would download more apps and games. But still, I don't think I would use up all 64GB. (Maybe, you never know I guess!)

Anyway, my question is, how much GBs do you guys currently have on your iPad, and what do you use it on?

3 words: high definition porn

:p :D:D

My 16GB iPad 2 still has 6GB left. I hardly store anything on it, I stream almost everything. Like at home I use Air Video and stream movies from my iMac. For my needs, any more storage is a huge waste of money. That's why I went with the same setup for the new model :)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

My iPad 2 is 64gb...its mainly filled with like 25 movies I've ripped. Although I could easily cut down to maybe 5-10 and easily get by with a 32gb model, but it's nice to know I have enough room to add more than just 10 or so.

I have about 15,000 songs in my music library, typically have 6 or so movies available in different genres - including at least one cartoon feature to entertain kids - several podcasts, lots of presentations and notes.

I'm generally using about 50g

I wish the new iPad was 128g.

Easy. Videos. Music. Apps. Books. Mine is about full. I was hoping for a 128 gig version, but with iCloud I can offload some of the stuff I have on it.

Anyone suggesting buying the 16GB is just plain dumb. With larger apps, better pictures/videos, and full HD videos, you need at least 32. I used to say that I'd switch out movies and other media when I needed too, but it becomes a real bitch.

I'm going with 64, and that way I can have it all on my iPad at once with minimal management.

That's a stupid thing to say if nothing else.
My movie library is over 1.8 TB and I have double that in TV shows and music.
Not even 10% will fit on any iPad, so if I have to rotate what I don't want to stream anyway Im sure I can handle the smaller iPad to.

...but why would you get the lower capacity model if you rely heavily on your large media collection? If you were just streaming Netflix, Spotify, etc., I would understand, but clearly that isn't the case.

All I'm saying is that for this specific iPad model, it seems that a higher capacity model is more necessary, as the space will get eaten up MUCH more quickly than the previous versions. 16GB is too small for most people's needs.

When I get iPad with 16GB I plan to put 188 photos, 65 apps, 13 notes. I don't need music because I am hearing impaired. So it should give me about 11GB free space just like my iPhone 4s.

It clearly isn't too small for most peoples needs because it is a hot seller. If Apple felt the need to get rid of the 16gb iPad they would have. I would have loved the addition of an 128gb iPad, but to say that someone is stupid for wanting a 16gb iPad is ridiculous. They have their own needs.

Because you can stream all music and videos from iTunes to the iPad.
I'm not saying that some people don't have the need for larger capacities or visa vie.
I use my iPad for mostly business during the day and at night I read or watch a movie or TV show and when I'm done I'm done meaning I don't need it anymore.
When I go out of town I load what I think I need and when I'm done I delete this stuff.
It's the same with books, I read one at a time and don't understand why people need to cary 20-30 books with them on a daily basis.
The most books I have is 3 and that lasts me a couple of weeks.

Now apps on the other hand I have more of and also fill them more as I need them for business, like Good Reader, Pages and so on.

I'm coming of a 1st gen iPad and had 32gb and never came close to even utilize it and that why I decided that a 16GB is plenty for me.
Not everyone has the same need and that is all I wanted to say to you.

I get very spotty cellular reception at work in my office and adding personal devices on the company network is a no-no so I need to have music loaded on my iPad. Since I listen to very random things in my music collection, I prefer having most or all of it loaded on my iPad. But as you say, it's how you use your device that drives the storage you need.

Way overstated. The way you use your iPad is not the way all will use their iPad. There are plenty of people that use their iPad for web browsing, video streaming, book & mag reading, and maybe have a couple dozen apps -- many with a small footprint. I have many friends and family very happy w/ 16GB.

I'm not disagreeing that 32 or 64 is be a better choice for some, just that there is a legitimate, intelligent case to be made for suggesting the 16Gb model.

This. I think I will be perfectly fine with a 16GB, because all I want it for is the wifi. I know I could buy another tablet that's cheaper and use the wifi, but I like the iPad size, the retina display, and the camera update is a plus, so I think the wifi + camera is what I would use most (I'm still debating on the 32GB and 64GB though).
