I have about 15,000 songs in my music library, typically have 6 or so movies available in different genres - including at least one cartoon feature to entertain kids - several podcasts, lots of presentations and notes.

I'm generally using about 50g

I wish the new iPad was 128g.

Use something like the Kingston widrive or the Seagate goflex.

If I get an iPad it isn't going to where I keep any media, I have other (better) devices for that. So, I was thinking a 16GB model would be plenty for me, but I'm curious: for those who are filling nearly 16GB (or more) with apps, which apps are taking so much space? Are they media apps? Games? Something else?

64GB is actually really easy to fill up. There will be some apps about 2-3GB or so if you like using GPS navigation apps. Also medical and business db apps will take up around 1GB or more depending on usage. Document storage for normal business users spans about 1GB. 4GB if business users use a lot of image and media heavy presentations. Productivity apps take up about 3GB. Gaming on the iPad can be pretty heavy depending on how large the games are. Music, TV Shows, and Movies can also be pretty large which will take up at least 32GB depending on how much content you have. I also store tons of books which comprise nearly 3GB on my iPads. When you add everything up, you still need to leave some room available on the iPad like about 2-4GB of space for further new content creation and paging. That pretty much takes up all the space on a 64GB iPad.

...but why would you get the lower capacity model if you rely heavily on your large media collection? If you were just streaming Netflix, Spotify, etc., I would understand, but clearly that isn't the case.

All I'm saying is that for this specific iPad model, it seems that a higher capacity model is more necessary, as the space will get eaten up MUCH more quickly than the previous versions. 16GB is too small for most people's needs.

I think the 16GB version might be used more in schools & business, but there are still some people who will not need that extra space. Plus, the Apple store proves there is still a demand for them.
