So I'm just starting to get my movies/tv shows imported into iTunes. My Music collection is anally organized and I've briefly read through this thread and have a few questions.

My setup: I am running Windows Vista, Quad Core with 3 GB of RAM. I have plenty of HDD space but would need to upgrade in that area once I get everything into iTunes.

Questions:
1 - What Windows program should I be using to convert my DVD collection? I've used Handbreak before but I've seen some mention of people using some other program to extract the DVD contents and then using Handbreak to convert. What is the reason for this? Can't I just use Handbreak for the whole process?

HandBrake will not break the copy protection on all DVDs, it is best to use a DVD ripper to first copy the DVD to your HD, and then HandBrake to convert it afterwards.

2 - What Windows program should I be using to tag my collection once converted and before importing into iTunes? The only program I've seen for Windows is a Java based one called "Tagger". Is this the best one to use for Windows?

3 - Handbreak only converts DVDs correct? If I have a .avi file already, handbreak will not convert that file to .mp4 or .m4v will it? In this case what Windows program is best?

The unreleased version of HandBrake will convert non-DVDs such as avi,flc,mkv,mp4 etc (anything that ffmpeg supports).

4 - What preset in Handbreak should I be using? I want to be prepared if I ever end up getting :apple:TV but I am also getting an iPhone soon so I would like the file to be able to play on both devices without having to use the :apple:TV preset in Handbreak and end up not being able to play that file on the iPhone (wow that was a run on sentence).

You will see many a discussion about the best settings that look OK on an AppleTV whilst still working on an iPod or iPhone, there is a thread at the top of this forum.

5 - Generic question re: :apple:TV. Can it be used with a Windows machine? (Sorry, I haven't done to much investigation with :apple:TV)

Yes it can, it simply uses iTunes within Windows to stream the data to the AppleTV. It will also get access to your photos.

Cheers, Ed.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. Do you have a link to the unreleased version of handbreak for Windows? Thanks again.

well if you go to the forums on handbrakes website and go to the development section you can find source code patches such as a blu-ray plugin and you can also get snapshots releases of versions in development. I wish I new how to work source code so I can apply that patch.

^^Do those patches work with the Windows version? As that is what ScootPatoot is using Windows which is a shame really:sad:

Am I the only one who organizes his movies in Finder?
Nope I organise my HD movies in Finder works like a charm.

yes the patches should work for windows (i think) but I have no idea how to work source code (which patches are in) however you can get a snapshot build download of HB 0.9.3

Here's a link for the handbrake dev forum where you can patches and the snapshot build (stickied at the top) link

On a different note I'll post some more pics of my collection since its been a while since i last posted.

Mike, I've considered doing something similar (combining numerous screenshots to create one long listing), but I have over 2400 episodes of TV shows, so the list would just scroll and scroll and scroll. lol Movies wouldn't be quite as bad though.

Man...my OCD kicked in so bad seeing your TV shows - I just want to reach out and fix them all!

Nice collection though.

Its not ready. It will be out in a development snapshot before a public release. All dev snapshots are announced at the top of the forums (not just the development forum) and are pretty much unsupported.

However, trust me when I say it is pretty cool to be sure. ;)

are you talking about the fact some seasons dont have titles yet... i know i haven't gotten around to doing it yet

Mikenike192,

If I may ask, What settings did you use for Futurama, Family Guy and the Simpsons?

I am currently redoing these myself. Are these strictly Apple tv only or iPhone/:apple:TV compatible?

Sorry if I'm asking too much. :)

Well I had them ripped at 1750kbps regular mp4 (had h.264 issues with ps3) double pass and i usually deinterlace them if they are interlaced, I dont play alot of movies and tv shows on my ps3 anymore after getting my apple tv, so I'm starting to rip everything new i get into 2000kbps (my normal move bitrate) 2pass h.264. But for iphone compatibility if rip all the tv shows to 640x480 resolution you should be fine and they should look good on your apple tv also, but be warned ripping at 1750kbps produces 300mb files so it could fill up a small 16gb iphone very quickly if you have multiple seasons (only downfall for me getting a iphone or touch... space waiting for that 64gb touch)

TV shows & Movies

Here is my current movie collection (I have another 50 I've watched and taken out).

TV, too many to fit in, but 105 shows, 4,916 episodes all tagged with artwork and descriptions.

I used this to do it, http://www.aroona.net/VideoDrive/Home.html costs a couple of quid, but well worth it.

You've gotta be obsessive about these things when you get these kind of volumes. I've just started the mammoth project of ripping my 1,500 DVD collection, gonna take some time.

Here is mine I am not finished putting all my movies in though, I just got an apple tv I am putting all my movies in itunes. I used Meta X to tag them.

All encoded with HandBrake's 'iPod Hi-Rez' preset, but with 2-pass encoding and 160kbps audio for the movies. All of the movie posters I use are from GetVideoArtwork and are 1000x1500.

I'm down to just under 10% free on my MacBook's 160GB hard drive thanks to HandBrake. I hope to replace it with a 500GB one soon.

Just Getting Started

This is what I have achieved in the past 6 days in anticipation of my Apple TV, which is on its way to me now.

All encoded from DVD's using Apple TV preset + 2 pass encoding in Handbrake.

It isn't much, but it's a start.

Nice Assortment.
I usually do a few movies a week, have to balance them with the TV shows I do. I'm using the ATV for Movies, and I Rip TV shows to Xvid to use with the PS3. I have a 4 devices that can all do Divx and Xvid so I like to keep my TV Stuff in that format.

DavidClassic, it's 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'.

Couldn't help but notice that slight typo. :(

This thread has made me start to rip my entire collection for iTunes - will upload some pictures when I get further through it. :D

This thread got me hooked and I bought an Apple TV and started ripping. 30 titles so far and they take forever on my iMac G5. Basically it's one movie per day. But it's great fun! Poor man's Kaleidescape...
