So I'm just starting to get my movies/tv shows imported into iTunes. My Music collection is anally organized and I've briefly read through this thread and have a few questions.
My setup: I am running Windows Vista, Quad Core with 3 GB of RAM. I have plenty of HDD space but would need to upgrade in that area once I get everything into iTunes.
Questions:
1 - What Windows program should I be using to convert my DVD collection? I've used Handbreak before but I've seen some mention of people using some other program to extract the DVD contents and then using Handbreak to convert. What is the reason for this? Can't I just use Handbreak for the whole process?
HandBrake will not break the copy protection on all DVDs, it is best to use a DVD ripper to first copy the DVD to your HD, and then HandBrake to convert it afterwards.
2 - What Windows program should I be using to tag my collection once converted and before importing into iTunes? The only program I've seen for Windows is a Java based one called "Tagger". Is this the best one to use for Windows?
3 - Handbreak only converts DVDs correct? If I have a .avi file already, handbreak will not convert that file to .mp4 or .m4v will it? In this case what Windows program is best?
The unreleased version of HandBrake will convert non-DVDs such as avi,flc,mkv,mp4 etc (anything that ffmpeg supports).
4 - What preset in Handbreak should I be using? I want to be prepared if I ever end up gettingTV but I am also getting an iPhone soon so I would like the file to be able to play on both devices without having to use the
TV preset in Handbreak and end up not being able to play that file on the iPhone (wow that was a run on sentence).
You will see many a discussion about the best settings that look OK on an AppleTV whilst still working on an iPod or iPhone, there is a thread at the top of this forum.
5 - Generic question re:TV. Can it be used with a Windows machine?
(Sorry, I haven't done to much investigation with
TV)
Yes it can, it simply uses iTunes within Windows to stream the data to the AppleTV. It will also get access to your photos.
Cheers, Ed.
