LOL, I can see that! I am certainly in the "deal with whatever" camp because I dont give a flying @#$#$ about a notch when I am going to get HOURS back in my mobile workday. I won't be bound to a desk. My life will literally be dramatically changing. Notch-smotch :p

I use at least one app with menus all the way across the bar on my 13 inch. I shudder to think how the 14 inch would handle this. Though, lots of items in the menu bar just seems to be an inherent limitation of the macOS UI. Seems to me the notch is just going to take what’s already a weakness of macOS and make it worse.
What is that app? I’ve been trying all the apps that I use to find an example with lots of menus and some that would cross over the middle but don’t seem to have any.

I expect that the OS will draw the menu items it can on the left and then skip over and draw the rest on the right. If it become a problem for an app, they could shift some features to other menus. Usually the rightmost menu items are Window and Help and they don’t get used all that much.

I’m curious to see how it works from the other side for menu bar items. I use Bartender to hide most of those but the hidden group extends well past center. Bartender may need to change how they arrange those.

In my opinion, based on those Reddit examples, “2. Collision”, would be the best outcome. The cursor has always followed the contour of the display since day 1. The “notch” is now part of that bezel surrounding the screen and it should be treated exactly the same, as a physical barrier.

However, considering the poor and sloppy nature of goofy Craig Federighi’s software division over the past 7 years…or so, I’m sure “1. Go Through”, is most likely. Like they never even considered it or care.

I’ve ultimately lost all faith in Apple’s software. It’s a shame because the hardware division is on fire! It’s bizarre.
No, they certainly have considered how this works in various scenarios. That is why “go through” is the cleanest solution. Just act like the bezel is applied on top of the screen. If you forced it to do “collision” then the user would need to watch our for and navigate around it as you went from menu to menu and bar icon to icon. It would also get in the way if you have another monitor above the MBP screen. That would be clunky.

Remember Steve Jobs? If he would have not paid attention to every little relatively insignificant detail Apple would be not where it is today. If that would be Samsung or Nokia nobody would give a rip. But since Apple is Apple we want the best solutions for problems and not some notch because of lack of innovation. Sorry, besides being ugly the notch means a lot more to people who are long-time Apple followers. It is a document of laziness and nonexistent creativity and innovation to come up with a "notchless" solution. I'm pretty sure Steve would hate that notch as well and would fire anybody who came up with that design.
Thanks for this! It expresses exactly my feelings also!

MacBook Pro 2019 16”
  • 226 PPI
  • 16‑inch (diagonal) LED‑backlit display with IPS technology; 3072‑by‑1920 native resolution at 226 pixels per inch with support for millions of colors

MacBook Pro 2021 16”
  • 254 PPI
  • 16.2-inch (diagonal) Liquid Retina XDR display;10 3456-by-2234 native resolution at 254 pixels per inch

It looks like they just added the notch.
Exactly. The point about the notch is that it isn't really an intrusion into the screen real estate. Rather, the menu bar is essentially above the normal screen, and the notch is in the middle of that space. It makes a ton of sense to me, now that I get the idea. Basically, Apple was saying; "the middle of the menu bar is totally unused space, so why not extend the screen vertically into the space of what would normally be the bezel, and just cut out space for the camera, like on the iPhones.

Another way of looking at it is that on these machines the menu bar is, at least conceptually, behind the top bezel.

I was also very confused by the notch rumour when I heard it, but now that I understand how it's implemented it makes a lot of sense to me.

This is far from the first MacRumors thread with a heated discussion about a nothingburger, and it sure as hell won’t be the last. These are ridiculously amazing computers and people are apoplectic about a tiny black rectangle. One guy even called it a “dealbreaker.” A dealbreaker! LMAO! Please, Mr. & Mrs. Dealbreaker, thank you ever so much for letting your deal be broken over a tiny black rectangle. My delivery wait will be just a wee bit shorter.

I happen to have a Logitech webcam on top of my 27" monitor. It has a base that looks exactly like a notch, hanging off the top border and covering the menu bar. It is very annoying.

I can see many advantages to hiding the mouse behind the notch.
But now I have to wonder, will screenshots show the notch, or reveal the hidden space behind it?
Will it not work just like the iPhone? The notch is gone in screen shots which look just like the non-FaceID iPhones.

I think Apple has got no balls to gloss over the glaring notch during the presentation. Why not acknowledge it head on, admit that it’s going to annoy a lot of you, even admit that it’s not the most elegant design solution, and then explain what the upside is? I think it’s the Apple passive/aggressive marketing bs that annoys people more than some of their bad design decisions.

LOL! Apple actually doubled down on the stupid notch. What an embarrassment.

I've been holding out on a proper MacBook upgrade for so long, I've got a 2012 MacBook Pro (the one with a DVD drive) and now that they almost released a nearly perfect laptop, they gave it the idiotic notch AND made it look like a MacBook from 2007...

😖
So you’re not going to buy the new laptop because of the notch? 🤔 I reserve judgement of the design, it does look 2007ish but of course sleeker. But everything else about the computer is a home run. It is the proper replacement many were asking for.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros both feature a notch, a first for the Mac. Given we've never had a notch on a Mac, there are some questions over how macOS handles the notch, and more specifically, how the mouse pointer does.

The predicament about how the mouse pointer handles the notch has been a question floated across Twitter and Reddit over the last 24 hours or so since the new MacBook Pro's announcement. An animation posted on Reddit portrayed two main possibilities, one in which the mouse pointer travels behind the notch, being invisible to the user. The other option showcased the mouse pointer traveling around the notch.

The new MacBook Pros will begin arriving next week, but thankfully, we don't have to wait that long to get an answer. Linda Dong, an Apple designer, has confirmed on Twitter that the macOS pointer travels behind the notch, allowing users to essentially hide the mouse pointer from view.

This behavior will come in handy, fundamentally making the notch a hiding place for the mouse pointer. This may come in good use, for example, when users want to more easily hide the mouse pointer while they watch a video.

Apple is taking steps to make the notch less of an annoyance for most customers in day-to-day use. When macOS apps are in full-screen mode, Apple adds an artificial black bar to the top of the display that hides the notch. Developers can, however, opt to allow their apps to make full use of the entire screen real estate, notch included. Here’s a better idea…

The mouse point zaps/teleports tot he opposite side when just about to pass the notch. Seem less intuitive and predictable.

Since the OS that draws the menu bar doesn’t know anything about it, I’m sure that it is annoying. In the case of these MBPs, that is taken into account. The notch doesn’t really impact anything except a part of the menu bar and the OS knows not to draw something there.

Yes, automatic teleporting like that would be much less intuitive, though it could be a little game that you and the mouse play with the notch. 😊

I might wait until another refresh, I'm getting a work laptop and building a new Hackintosh desktop. Might not need to get it yet... but, yeah... outside of the notch and design, it's an incredible system. Still tempted. Will need to see benchmarks and reviews on the M1 Pro / Max and see what my job is giving me to work on as well.

I’m not trying to be a troll.

I think you’d be very happy with an iPhone 13 / Pro / Max / Mini.

Or an iPad Pro M1.

And if you have the money you should get it. :)

But it’s super obvious that the Apple Watch Series 7 and MacBook Pro 16” are the best tech available and probably aren’t going to radically change.

I think the iPad Pro and iPhone 13 are going to change again, just because of accessory issues like Magic Keyboards and MagSafe.

Other than that, they seem like good buys too.

Just my 2 cents.
