Just to let you guys know, I purchased my iPhone from Apple. I ordered using my wife's number but wanted to use it on mine. I called AT&T customer service. I gave them the SIM card number and IMEI number and she switched it off of my wife's number to my number. I turned the phone on.
HERE IS THE SCARY PART:
It will say the old phone number, but if you read it says this is for ordering info from Apple only. Hit next, hold your breath. Go thru the prompts and then I went into the Phone section and my number appeared. Called my wife and she said her phone still works. Good to go.
Just in case people were wondering, that is all you have to do.
is there anyone who has done that?....my concern is if the activation goes to my wife's phone i will be without a phone....can anyone confirm they went pas the activation screen with the wrong number showing....sorry the skepticism but just want to be sure
So you did this with an iPhone 5 today? Just looking for confirmation that someone has done this with an iPhone 5 upgrade swap.
Awesome. Thanks. So you had to open the box and pop the sim out? I always thought the number was on the box too, but never looked.
Is the SIM number the ICCID number? That number was on the 4S box.
Not sure but I don't think so.
It didn't interfere with the line who's upgrade you used at all
Did it?
Thanks for the info. There has been do much conflicting into because I think previous iPhones may have needed a new sim. Whether that is true or not is irrelevant. It's good to know that the new iPhone bought from Apple can be done by phone.
I'm on the phone with AT&T now and she is absolutely clueless!!

hang up!
lol I agree. Run as fast as you can.
Question for those who have done this this morning. On hold for long? Does the call take long?
I've been on hold for about 15 minutes during one part of the process. Although the upgrade swap itself seemed old hat to the rep, she's reporting that it's been trying to force her to assign a different plan and doesn't allow the option of our Mobile Share plan. Might be a bug in the system prompts that it's not showing that plan, but we'll hopefully find out once she comes back to the line.
telling me the phone is already active and I need to go to the store to get new sims
Did you turn the phone on before you called them?
Just did mine. Follow what is said in the OP.
Yes. Need to remove the SIM.
Rep said No.
It works. My new phone is up and running. Apps syncing right now.
Update on above, I ended up just doing the activation and it worked FLAWLESSLY. I did the purchase for the iPhone 5 on a different line and just called AT&T. No need to go to the store. And yes, it will show the original number you purchased the phone for but just continue activation. In the contacts, it will reflect your own number.
ENJOY EVERYONE.
Ok...took the plunge and moved on from the activation screen that showed the wrong phone number....it did activate to my number....I did not have to go to the ATT store...thanks for the info...sorry if I was nervous but I could not have my phone go down for any period of time....appreciate all the help and info

FWIW, I did the swap in-store with a new phone and they still had to swap out the SIM.
I ordered from Apple....one thing that help me go past the activation screen was the fact the my IPhone 4S was deactivated...so the let me know that customer service did in fact deactivate the correct phone...hope this helps!
