I have a question slightly related to this ....

I had an iPhone 3GS I sold about 6-7 weeks ago on eBay (before the change in data plans hit) to prepare for the 4. After I sold it I temporarily switched to an old Moto phone and kept the $15 unlimited data on it which I am still using.

When I get my 4 next week will I be able to get on the unlimited plan even though I dumped my 3GS 7 weeks ago ? It's not a real big deal if I can't (I doubt I use more than 2GB/mo) but for the $5 I'd rather keep the unlimited.

Most of us don't fall into the 2% of people who use more than 2GB of data. You know, 98% is much bigger than 2%.

It's 2% now, but it's shortsighted to think that it will stay that way.

Those 98% of people who stayed under 2GB a month didn't have a 5 megapixel camera. They didn't have a screen that has 4 times the pixels of the previous model, and apps to take advantage of it liek MobileMe gallery, which now pulls larger, more detailed photos to take advantage. Tethering wasn't a sanctioned option, as it is now (albeit for an extra fee). And no one had even heard of Facetime, much less was there a prospect of it being allowed over the cellular networks sometime next year.

If anything, the iPhone 4 has the potential for being even more data-hungry than previous models, in some cases without users even doing much to change their usage patterns.

i've been trying to do this for 2 days, and iTunes is still giving me an error:

"your activation requires additional time to complete"

anyone else have this issue, and were you able to fix it?

my plan is the following: family plan with 5 lines activated on it
28% discount on account

or anyone with a similar plan to mine and were able to get it to work?

Did you restore the 2g iphone before starting the process?

Sorry If this is a noob question, but I'm slightly confused.

My wife has a iphone 3GS but sadly switched to the 2GB data plan thinking it will save money, but is now regretting the decision.

Would this loophole still work, i.e. on a contract that is a year old and has the unlimited data switched to the 2GB/$25 plan.

1. So we simply need to get a original iphone
2. Pop her current sim in it.
3. Plug the old iphone to itunes to activate
4. Put the sim back into her iphone 3GS
5. Unlimited plan is back on again!?

Is that about right or have I completed got this wrong

Your help in this is really appreciated!!

That's about as plain as it can get.... except I recommend using a brand new sim.

OK, here is the right way to do this.

IN the past two years, I never had this work by doing what the OP suggests.

I always had to restore my phone and then insert a brand new sim into the phone. Plug it into iTunes and proceed to activate your "new" phone. When prompted, you are replacing your current phone with this iPhone. Select the unlimited data plan that you want and then in a few seconds, the phone with the new sim in it will activate.

Now you also need a new never before used micros sim. Place that into the iPhone 4 and connect to iTunes. It will prompt you to activate your new iPhone using your current number. Now your unlimited data plan is now working on your iPhone 4.

Wait... isn't the 2g edge data only?

If all you're getting is unlimited edge data, I wonder what happens when you start using 3G data on an edge-only plan?

For the 10th time, you will get a text from AT&T stating they are upgrading your account to the 3G unlimited data plan for $30 a month. :p

You're wasting your time explaining this over and over. This is why I quit posting in the other thread explaining all of this last week. It gets old.

Ok maybe its cause I'm getting old/senile...but I'm still a tad bit confused.

let me run this by you again and if I'm still getting this wrong...well...i guess you can give up me then

1. Get a Original Iphone
2. Get a new Blank Sim from ATT
3. Put sim in Original iphone
4. Activate with her current 3GS number
5. Take Sim out of Original iPhone
6. Put the newly activated sim in her 3GS
7. Wait for ATT to send text/email about change in data plan
8. Get unlimited data back on her phone for $30
9. Smile, jump up in the air in 80s montage kind-of-way
10. Thank everyone on MR for putting up with me.

I hope that covers everything. I only wish ATT didnt have to make is jump through these hurdles.

PS: Anyone living in the Chicago area who would let us borrow their original iPhone for 10 mins? Lunch would be on us for your assistance. :D (we live in the downtown area....near the Apple store)

I have 2g iPhone and when I pre-ordered my iphone4 from AT&T they asked me what data plan I want and I selected Unlimited for $30 each month with no problem.
