Or do you mean Restore it from iTunes? It didn't give me that option, I don't think. Only the option to activate it.

yes i restored it in itunes... when i took the old sim out of the original iphone it would still let me use it like an ipod touch... it still showed up when i plugged it into itunes. i restored it with no sim in it. after it was restored i popped in my micro sim and was prompted to activate it when i connected it to my computer.

It's frustrating that it's working for others but not me :(

only other thing i can think to mention...

was your friends iphone currently active on his account? i used my sisters first gen iphone but before i did anything with it i put her sim into an old at&t phone so the iphone wouldn't be currently active. not sure if that makes any difference, i'm new to at&t and this whole sim card thing...

Well I found a way to restore it with a SIM card in it. But after it finished restoring, it immediately went back to the "Your activation requires additional time to complete" screen. Any tips?

Is there anyway to deactivate the iPhone or cancel the activation process without calling AT&T? Maybe restoring the sim on my iPhone 4?

1. It does not start a new 2 year contract when going through these steps. I've done it many times.
2. Inserting someone else's sim will simply prompt you to connect to iTunes and then it will activate the phone once again.

Well, maybe AT&T changed their systems, but when I used iTunes to activate my new replacement SIM, my contract date was definitely reset to 2 years. I had to call to get it fixed. This was in 2007 or 2008 though.

Sorry I'm constantly bumping this, but I'm really desperate to get this to work. Anyway, couldn't I just tell AT&T that I want a sim card with my information on it so I can switch between iPhones for whatever reason? Then go home, activate the data, then switch back to my other? Or would they disallow my account to go to unlimited data?

you can just get one off of ebay for less than a buck if you look around.

i think you can only have 1 sim active so if you activate a regular sim card then your micro will become inactive and you will need a new one of those to switch back to your 4. or so i hear.

have you tried calling customer service to see what the hold up is? not that they're likely to help... but at least its something to try

Wow, this sounds too good to be true. I wanna try it, but I don't have an iPhone 2G around at all. Can this be done with the iPhone 3G? I know someone who has one, but I doubt it'll work. =\

Well I'm calling it quits for the night. I'm stopping by AT&T tomorrow and going to make up some story about needing a new sim card for an old iPhone a friend is gonna let me borrow and see if they'll give me a micro as well for when I find my "lost" iPhone 4.

Cheers.

Yes, you can use a 3G. That's why every set of instructions on all FIVE pages says use a 2G. You can be the one exception slick. Instead of posting and sounding very stupid, read before you post. I'm sure everyone on here is tired of repeating themselves for lazy ass people like you.

Just tell them that you are going on a vacation, and you want to take your 2g iPhone with, rather than taking your iPhone 4 and risk losing/damaging it.

Ok just one more question from me lol.

When i purchase an iPhone 4, im gonna assume it comes with a microSIM. So could i just put the microSIM that comes with the iPhone 4 (without ever putting it in the iPhone 4) into the 2g iPhone, and then follow the instructions? Or do i need a regular unused SIM card and a microSIM?

Only the 2g will work.

Just get a sim and cut to a micro sim after activation. There are videos all over the net. That is what I am planning on doing.

Thank you, that's all I needed to know. I did read the entire thread and my question may have been "stupid" but I was just asking because I don't have an iPhone 2G near me. I didn't need anyone to be rude about it.

I guess I'm off to buying a 2G just to get this. Haha.

Yeah, someone else said they did this with an adapter and it worked. Then just put the microSIM into your iPhone 4 and you're set. That's what I plan to do. I just hope the 2G phone gets to me before my iPhone 4 does, or I'm going to get impatient and activate it and then have to hassle with getting new SIMs and junk.

I was just thinking of taping it or w/e onto the tray. Or maybe ill find a microSIM adapter or just do the DIY way lol.

read through the whole thread and was wondering.
This $30 unlimited data plan that we are able to grandfather into the iphone 4g, does it include unlimited texting as well?

nope, does not include texting, it is just for data.

Hmm... My friend is in a little different situation but I think if he follows this it will work for him.

He has tmobile service. He is waiting for white iphone 4 to come out and switch. I told him about this loophole, but he is in a different situation from those of us who are still in att service. I personally fear that this loophole won't last long so I'm trying to help him out by doing this.

1) Get a blank att sim put it in my 2g.
2) Activate it.
3) Pull out the iphone 2g activated sim
4) Put it in to my 3g.
5) Moments later text msg arrives telling him the data plan was changed.
6) Wait for white IP4 to come out
7) Get 2 yr contract with white IP4 grandfathering the $30 unlim data.

That's my theory but the question is, will it work?

Will this work?

1.Take new micro sim card and place into original iPhone with current 2gb data plan activated on phone line. or take active micro sim from iPhone 4 and use it and save new micro sim for iPhone 4 after original iPhone is activated. (which way please?)
2. connect to iTunes and activate and choose option to undo 2gb and select unlimited data. (do I then have to wait for the text to upgrade data to 3G before activating iPhone 4?)
3. next unplug original iPhone from iTunes and connect iPhone 4 with same micro sim that I already have in it that was once active. or should i use the micro sim from original iPhone that is currently active and transfer it to the iPhone 4. (which way please?)
4. connect iPhone 4 and activate and select unlimited date
5. all good to go

If anyone can clear this up for me I would really appreciate it please
