hey, i want to know about this too. i'm curently in junior high school, in july im going to high school. after the national test is done i want a mbp, but instead of allowing me to have one, my dad just want me to build a new pc then.. he said that i won't need a laptop, and he is an apple hater (while im an apple lover :p)

And PS: You'll learn a lot from building a computer. Also, you're obviously still living at home... why don't you take the summer to earn some money and buy it yourself? You'll definitely show your old man some maturity.

... None of these kids are gonna get MacBooks are they??

I dunno about you guys but I have been psychologically/verbally controlling my parents since i was 15. But that's just me, I had a lot more dynamic logic Starting to develop at that age compared to most people because i played a lot of video games with puzzle solving elements.

Wow.......

If you were my kid, I'd smack the crap out of you then toss you out of the house. I realize you are making up 98% of what you post, but still. Have a little respect.

Which widows? How old laptop?
You need nothing less the core duo Windows 7 and nothing older then 2 years old,
Honestly a 500 laptop brand new will beat a 3 year old laptop most times by a factor of 10.

I would compare a 499 to 600 new laptop with win7 to any Mac. I think you would be surprised at how close they are now and you would save 350 to 450 USD.

I would not want deal with a laptop older then 3 years not worth it.

Show me where I can buy a laptop with a quad core i7 for 499-600? I am really interested. You say that a 499-600 new laptop can compare to any mac.

well, my dad can actually buy me the most expensive mbp, but he just don't want to buy it. i currently have about $700 money of my own so i just ask for the rest $500 (cheapest mbp).

i'm currently dual booting w7 and osx on my 5 years old pentium d computer. and i use the mac for developing the iphone app (still learning alot from the book and internet),

well let's see my grade, if i can get a good mark then my dad will allow me to buy 1

If you don't need the processor power, go for a refurbished 2010. It's a very sweet deal. Besides, I own a 2010 and a friend of mine the 2011, the second one gets SO HOT... it starts to scorch your lap after a while.

I underclocked and undervolted mine, so it's remains cool and silent at all times (except when encoding, duhh). This is only possible with the older core2duo chips for now.

How do you intend to persuade him? By making your father realise (if true) that you need and deserve to have this (possibly in his eyes) flashy toy computer, or by manipulating him into thinking that you do?

In the former case, I would recommend you to work hard, get good grades and maybe have a part time job too as long as it doesn't affect your school work (this is very important).

In the latter case, you're behaving like a spoiled and ungrateful brat, not totally unlike those who caused the recession. I would be thrilled to get a computer for free when I was your age. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

yippe !!!
just do a little chit chat With my dad when dinner, he let me buy the macbook if i get 3rd ranking of best student, while im currently at 4-6, which mean that I will get 1 year scholarship in my high school, and my dad let me use the money that he had paid about 3 months ago to attend the high school ( about $800-$1000)

but....
I FORGOT TO SAY THE PRO....
****

well wish me luck guys, i need to reduce my online time and study harder

Good luck! This strategy sounds good.

In every modern civilized country an underage person is eligible to buy anything he or she wants, if its their own money and does not violate any laws otherwise. So you can just go out and buy that thing, and your dad, mom or grandpa will just have to shut up about that. A private property is a holy right and even underage kids or kids living with their parents have that right. If your money is on a bank account which is co-owned by your parents (meaning you need their signature to withdraw the money), then you are out of luck. You can of course sue your dad in the later case (and you have all the means to win the process).

This.

I got my own bank account when I was about 12 years old, and the money on that account - whether it was pocket money, birthday/christmas money or money I'd earned myself - belonged to me and was mine to spend. My parents understood this, and so should any parents not stuck in the 1950s. Some of the attitudes on display here are shocking. I hope not too many of you have children.

This is funny. We did it backwards...

Since I am a Mac Tech I have had lots of chances to get and fix broken laptops on the cheap. So, we would give our daughter one of those. The latest was my older MBP C2D 2.4.

She promptly spilled iced tea and green tea in both that one and the previous one.

I was tired of trying to fix them only to have her destroy it again (she's 14 now, this is over last 2 years). So, we made her pony up out of her savings the money to replace the 2.4 model.

Now she has a refurbed 2.53 i5 (all are 15") and I am praying she is not stupid enough to do it again (yeah, right).

The money? We put it back into her savings. She does not know that, but it hurt like hell when we told her it would cost her all the savings she had.

Don't know how old you are, but if you really don't need it, but just want it, not a good reason. This is from a Dad.

Hi,

I am new to this message board. :) I need a new laptop for the new school that I will be going in to. I really want to buy a 13 " MacBook Pro, but my Dad has a crappy refurbished Windows laptop he wants to give me. I want to buy a MacBook Pro with my own money. I've asked him once before about what he thought about my idea and he said no. How can I persuade him to let me buy one? It's not like it is his own money he will be spending. I've talked with him about the pro's and con's and all of that stuff, and he won't budge. Help! Any tips?

Thanks in advance,
MJNBGA

Either suck up to your dad or listen to him. Don't say "oh its my life i can do w.e i want with my life and money". Otherwise you'd have no discipline.

Building a computer was great, even my dad wanted to help me. Although I was too stubborn and liked to do these type of things alone. Then again, I was 13 at the time.

Nice necro but this thread has some stupid answers.

People telling him to break it or just go out and blow all his money or sue his own father?

Some people are a tad psychotic when it comes to Apple, it's both sad and scary.
