To the OP, not sure how old you are but your saved money will likely be spent better on something else in the future. Don't go blow it all on a computer, work with what you got at the moment and when it's college time talk to your Dad again.

But OP doesn't mention why his/her father says no. In the end, sure, it doesn't matter why, but there are times on this board where individuals ask for help persuading a 'decision maker' , not because of money, but because of misconceptions about Mac OS and Apple hardware in general.

If its the former than, done deal. If its the latter, perhaps we can offer assistance.

Hi,

I am new to this message board. :) I need a new laptop for the new school that I will be going in to. I really want to buy a 13 " MacBook Pro, but my Dad has a crappy refurbished Windows laptop he wants to give me. I want to buy a MacBook Pro with my own money. I've asked him once before about what he thought about my idea and he said no. How can I persuade him to let me buy one? It's not like it is his own money he will be spending. I've talked with him about the pro's and con's and all of that stuff, and he won't budge. Help! Any tips?

Thanks in advance,
MJNBGA
how old are you? do you live with your parents? he may have other (very good) reasons for not wanting you buy an expensive new machine, so listen to him. use his old windows laptop. at least for a few months.... then decide. maybe he was right and you're happy with it? or maybe after a few months you feel even stronger about wanting a mac? who knows. either way.... listen to him for now and see how you feel in a few months.

Ok, this is what you do. You are starting a new school. Take the laptop your dad is offering you. Go to school check out what everyone else has in class. Some schools have software that only works on a PC (yeah, I know you can use bootcamp to load windows). This is called compromise... use it for a year. Save more money, get yourself a MBP for next year. If I was in middle or high school I would not want to bring a nice computer to school... stuff happens... if you know what I mean. Now bringing a crap PC to school... no one will notice.

I'm not sure what you are looking for?

There is no smoking gun that will suddenly make your father change his mind. If you aren't an adult, then you live by whatever your parents state. Sure you can have some rational discussions, but in the end it is their decision as to what you can and can not do.

Whining won't work. Just be glad you will have a computer at all.

May I ask what your dad reasoning is? I know that he had said no, but what was his reasoning behind it? Is it just because he has a laptop to give you or did he give you an explanation on why he would not budge at all? If we know his reasoning we might be able to assist you better. In the end however, even if it's your money you should still respect his authority. That's the benefit of moving out and being independent, you make your own moves and deal with it.

If there is a shopping centre near where you live that has an apple store, go in there with him and let the sales people do their thing. He'll be walking out of there with you and your macbook pro, an imac, appletv, ipods, ipads, ilife, iwork, airport extreme, applecare on the whole lot, and a new mortgage on the house.

If you're going to college, get the price with the education discount. Also, find out if you have a class, or plan to take a class, which requires a newer computer. The tell him that with a Mac, you can have a reliable computer that won't get viruses, and can still run Windows when needed for class.

To Paraphrase JG Wentworth - It's your money, use it how you want to.

Sorry to side with dad...but I am the mom of a recent high school grad. So here is my " practical mom " reply. He feels that the used PC will be a fine computer for taking to, what I assume is, a high school. ( correct me if I am wrong ) High school is not the best environment for a fancy new laptop. Think theft, careless kids in the lunchroom, getting left in on a desk, on the bus.... We went through a lot of phones at our house during the high school years.
Your dad is trying to keep your money in the bank for you a bit longer and have you take something a big less valuable to school.

There's no reason to use a MBP over a well maintained Windows PC. If you want OS X, try making the PC a hackintosh. If you want the MBP hardware, but to run Windows on it, your dad's right, don't do it.

Either way, you win.

Daddy's house, daddy's rules... I can think of about 100 better things to spend money on, besides a computer that'll be outdated before you need its full computing potential.

Dad, why are you being so evil to me? You gave birth to me why do you want to see me be unhappy? Don't you care about my happiness? What kind of father doesn't care about his own son? His OWN BLOOD!!??

if it makes be happy and more likely to learn and want to use it, I'll absorb more information and become more likely to start my own business and browse business ideas and develop. The aesthetic design encourages use and enjoyment of that use.

If you care about my happiness you'll let me invest in myself. If not you're just an evil dictator.

Then, if you have that type of dynamic, reasonably cuss him out calling him hitler and Stalin and being pure evil and then leave the situation making him feel like maybe he's wrong and just being a d1ck.

I don't think this dad cares about future resale value and superior battery life.

Probably price. Microcenter has the old version MBP 13" new for $899, but it's in store pickup only. I'm not sure if it's ok to post a link here, but just google it, it's on their website.

Also tell him you will keep for a few years, and they tend to be good quality and don't break as often as cheaper PC notebooks.

It sounds like you are young, have no income other than what you periodically receive from family and friends on gift-giving occasions, and your dad doesn't want you to spend every dime on a computer when he has one you can use for free.

I agree with him. In all likelihood you aren't doing anything on a computer that you can't do on that Windows machine. Save your money, and when you have regular income, buy something better.

Purchase it anyway. Once it shows up, he won't make you return it. Too much hassle.

p.s. how old are you?

take it and go with it

Try taking the old pc and using it for a few weeks. it will probably be slow and crappy, so you could bring it too him and say; "what now" but a serious con to a mac is that you will most likely be emailing some stuff, and most work is done in pages. teachers will burn you for submitting stuff they cant open on their pc. but then a pro is buying the mac and it still being in brand new condition for 5 years. by then you will have gone through ten pc's and have blown your money. remember, macs own! :)

How about make compromise w/ your dad? Promise him you will raise your gpa(unless you are already all A student).

This SHOULD work.

Why is everyone giving him suggestion how on to talk his Dad into this? Seems like it'll just annoy him.

The only sure fired way to do this is, if you really want this enough, to go get a job and save up while ensuring your grades don't drop. Seeing you work for something you want in a responsible way is something he'll be happy about. You blowing away a big chuck of saving for what he sees as a fancy toy isn't something he'll be too happy about. No matter how you try to present it to him in a nice way.

Expect this will happen when you want to get a car as well.
