Finally there is a proper way to setup your Mail app to actually get your hotmail account mail,

Step 1: goto preferences and add a new account.
Step 2: enter your name, your hotmail email and password
Step 3: The settings then are:
Account Type: POP
Description: anything you want
Incoming Mail Server: pop3.live.com
Username: _______@hotmail.com or _______@live.com, which ever your email is
Password: Your own password
Step 4: Hit next, then for description anything you want
Outgoing mail server: smtp.live.com, check always use this server
Check Use Authentication: enter your email and password

Step5 : and thats it your done, check take account online and hit create and you will see all your hotmail, mail start coming in

Enjoy :D

umm first of all in my Mail app when chosen POP type the outgoing email address slot doesn't show... And I just tried to do it without putting that on and it doesn't work... Do I use exchange type?

Great guide. Works like a charm! (I did this last week).

It only works for certain countries right now and microsoft are rolling out free pop3 access country by country. If you check their blog, you can see which countries are working and which are not.

UK is fine.
America is a no no for now (i'm guessing due to the size).

100% working

Thanx dude!!!
Been looking for this for months now.

Works here in The Netherlands

How is this working, I tried countless times to get Hotmail working on Mail and failed everytime

I can confirm this works, although it's a bit slow at first.

EDIT: Screenshot as proof.

Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotmail#POP3
POP3 access is now available for all Hotmail accounts in United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands as of February 2009. [26] Countries that do not have POP3 access enabled for free, Hotmail plus costs $19.95 for each year the user is subscribed to the service, and POP3 access is available to all other countries through that service.[27] Alternatively, users can change their country in Hotmail options to a country that has enabled free POP3 access. [28]

Might be wise to sticky this for a little while.

I'm in the US and am able to get my hotmail on my old PowerBook G4, but I had to download a plug in, but I had to make sure I paid for hotmail "live" access. The plug in was free and it works really good. I'm you can find it if you do a google search

It also worked for me just now after I restarted the Mac, but I didn't get the Hotmail user interface, just the Apple Mail interface. Maybe the interface doesn't work for U.S. mail???

If you follow the instructions, it works fine :)

That's astounding.

Finally!

:D

 It's downloaded emails from as far back as July 2006! Now here's a trip down memory lane.

Hotmail in Safari

Are all you guys receiving the actual Hotmail interface or is it the same Apple mail interface? I notice the one fellow from the UK actually received the Hotmail interface. I've got it but with Apple's interface.

Thanks in advance.

I don't understand your question... if you enable Hotmail POP access in Mail, it will look and function like any other account in Mail. If you enable it in Thunderbird, it will look and function like any other account in Thunderbird. Ditto for Outlook, the iPhone, Eudora, etc, etc.

If you want the Windows Live or Hotmail interfaces, you can still always use a web browser, even after you have enabled POP access.

It's apples interface, that was just an email from Microsoft, asking me something, the "interface" you saw was just the contents of the email.

I've just added hotmail and mail.app is constantly crashing as it tries to retreive old mail from the account :-(

EDIT/UPDATE: I just turned off growlmail and the crashes have stopped. Growlmail was fine before adding the hotmail account though.

I'm still having problem receiving my normal mail from BT, it know's there is mailt o get but just won't finish retrieving it, grrrrrr.
