Can anybody tell me how to set it so that when I check an email in Mail, it's no longer a new email on the server?

Example:

I get an email for Hotmail and use Mail to retrieve it. But if I log into Hotmail through a browser, all the emails I checked with the Mail app are still marked as new mail.

Go to Mail->Preferences->Accounts->(Your Hotmail Account)->Advanced
checkmark "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:"
in the dropdown box select "Right away"

That's it! :D

Thank you :)

BUT all that really seemed to do is just move my emails on hotmail to the trash. Is there a way so that it does not move my emails to the trash and accomplishes what I said earlier?

As far as I know, what you want to do doesn't work with POP3 protocol, which is the only one offered by Hotmail that let you retrieve your emails into Mail.app. This can only be achieved with IMAP (available with Gmail for instance) which synchronizes your email account between the server (Gmail) and the client (Mail.app) so that when you read a message on Mail, it will automatically set that message as read also on the (Gmail) server. It also synchronizes the different mailboxes you create, in other words it's more functional and that's why I moved from Hotmail to Gmail! Cheers

I made the move as well a long time ago, but I still use my hotmail from time to time. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated!! :)

FYI: Hotmail is available as an email option in mail

You just need to go to "Other" and add your account data. You won't be able to delete messages off the server and you can only see your inbox and not folders, but at least you can see your hotmail messages w/o and you'll get notifications when you have new emails.

thanks man. i'm going to come back to this thread once my iphone's are delivered...gotta set up hotmail for the wife.

thanks again man!

Don't bother reading all of this thread.

After 3.0 came out it is even easier. Just select Other when setting up your account, enter your address and password. That's it!! There is no need to know the details. Your iPhone knows them. :D
