I have to say that as much as I fell in love with the Edition model when it was first announced (for some reason I just didn't make the connection between 'solid gold' and 'way out of my price range') I know that if I could afford the Edition I honestly couldn't justify its cost to myself.

I don't care about justifying my SS purchase to anyone else, it's my money and my life, but that gold one is just too much of a step up for me to be happy wearing it. Okay, it looks gorgeous, but not several thousand more gorgeous than the SS in my opinion.

Why do i want to spend the next year + wearing a cheap version just because its a 1st gen. I want a watch that looks great as i'm going to be wearing it everyday.

Smart watches are also nothing new. I wore one for a year and its the thing i missed the most about moving back to Apple.

Considering the following facts:

- the wearable market is in its infancy and smart watches have yet to prove themselves as valuable indespensible devices
- No-one has actually tried or used an Apple Watch yet so no-one knows if it is actually any good
- as the Apple Watch is gen 1, there will likely be some significant improvements in the coming years

On this basis, when you show people your £600+ Stainless Steel Apple Watch, and they look at you in disbelief because you spent that much, how will you give a serious respectable answer?

To be very clear, im playing devil's advocate - I'm not judging anyone here for what they choose to spend their money on, but I'm asking from the hypothetical perspective of most non tech-obsessed people, who will probably think you are bonkers.

(The Sports Watch on the other hand, while not looking as nice has a more believable response - "it is gen 1 so I got the cheapest I could to try out the category, decide if it is for me, then if I like it I can perhaps invest in a nicer one in a year or two.")

How can you justify wearing Aluminum Jewelry? ICK

In my case, I bought the Sport.

Whilst I know I wouldn't need to justify my purchase to others, I do need to justify it to myself, and I just can't do that with the SS version, even though I can afford it.

Perhaps I don't have enough money to not give a s*it about spending £600+ on a watch, but the fact is that I just can't justify spending that on something that will devaluate at the same rate as any other electronic device, especially being the first one (if the watch ends up being extremely useful I might pay for the SS version once the improve on it in future revisions).

My thoughts too. It's not just about justifying to others, but also to myself.

I guess what brought this question to my mind was the quite noticeable difference in public perception of this watch vs most other known Apple products.

Really, almost no-one I talk to knows anything about this watch. Obviously no-one needs to justify anything to anyone, but in reality a LOT of people are going to be asking about what you bought, what it does and how much it costs.

When I was initially planning on getting the SS with leather loop, I imagined myself answering these questions. "Well, it shows notifications, you can make calls and texts, and do a few other things, but in essence this is a new type of product and time will tell how useful it will be". "Cool, how much was it?". "£600". "WHAT?".

Perhaps what I'm saying is that I think people who spend lots of cash on this are making more of a statement than usual. I.e. "not only can I afford to spend this much on a smartwatch, I can afford to spend this much while having no idea whether it will be any good or not".

(I'm obviously making an assumption that we don't know how useful this watch will be yet. Perhaps others who have already owned smartwatches don't agree this is case. Fair enough.)

"I imagined myself answering these questions..." really? Do you usually try to justify the things you spend your money on?

I ordered the 42mm SG sport, everyone keeps talking about the screen's vulnerability to scratches but like with every iDevice, wouldn't a screen protector be available (not by Apple of course)? or do you think that would limit functionality?

The more premium finish does lend itself better to a formal environment, making the SS a little more versatile than the Sport (though for the record, the Sport looks great in black). Also the sapphire crystal is practically scratch proof which gives peace of mind for someone like me who tends to scratch the heck out watches.

Easy, I wouldn't! It's my money and I could burn it, nobodies business what I do with it. With that said I bought the Sport model because it does seem silly to pay a lot when I'll just upgrade in a year. :apple:

1. Stainless steel looks fantastic when it's all scratched up.
2. Ion glass doesn't look good when it's all scratched up.
3. Sapphire glass doesn't get all scratched up.
4. I want to be popular.
5. I'm allergic to aloomineeum.
6. My cat advised me that stainless steel will make me happy. #
7. I like justifying myself.
8. I'm afraid that apple will go out of business if I don't support all of their products.
9. I need something for when I'm not in the mood to wear my apple watch edition.
10. Micky Mouse looks good when framed in SS.

Maybe 10% of my friends will even know that there are two (not counting the ridiculous Edition) versions of the watch. Those who do are pretty much hopeless Apple-philes too, so I doubt I'll have to defend my choice.

Why do you even care? If they have the money, why not? There are many people out there who can afford more than the sport version.

I dont see why so many sport version buyers try to degrade the choice of apple watch and watch edition buyers due to money.

Because I like that design of the SS Milanese Loop. It's a fashion statement. I just did not really care for the sport watch and the sport bands. I wanted to wear a watch that is scratch resistant, and has a proper watch band that I like.

IMO, SS is definitely worth it.

1. My lady says aluminum models look like kids toy and I should get a proper watch
2. The SS/Sapphire and the looks alone justify the price even if this watch tells time only (with linked bracelet or Milanese loop)
3. Aluminum with rubber band feel cheap for my line of work (dressed up daily/corporate)
4. The price is affordable without needing a second thought
5. Rubber band feels cheap if you ever need to wear a suit (daily for me)

I certainly don't feel the need to justify my purchases to anyone, other than my spouse and was also torn between the SS and the Sport, too. I finally opted for the Sport: 1) the fitness application was my primary reason for wanting this (for past several years) 2) this is 1st Gen. If its is a great as I think I will be, then I can upgrade to SS on the next model and still probably get a good resale price for my 1st Gen Sport. 3) since this is brand new, I fear that thefts and robberies will be on the rise. My Sport will most likely not be as much of an attention getter.
