Ah, good! I forget to mention that option, too. Though I have had the experience that almost every dongle is compatible, even if they do not state that they are OS X compatible.

I've kind of noticed the same for most USB type things. Like hard drives, where they ask you to pay more for the OS X compatible hard drives when a simple format will make any other drive work.

I'm getting antsy :D

Todays a good day, tho got some applications for jobs in, hopefully get some calls back and hopefully this mac gets here in good shape along with my keyboard.

FedEx didn't even knock... just left a note. Now I'm irritated. On the phone trying to set up a pick-up for tonight.

They left my box in a pile of snow... Poor PowerBook was cold as ice when I opened it. Great job FedEx...

I absolutely HATE FedEx, but I wasn't given a choice on ebay. Now I have to sit here and wait for the package AGAIN tomorrow. I came home early from work today to make sure I could be here to receive the machine and nope... too much work to knock on my door.

I've had a good talk with two people in customer service and have come to the conclusion that they just don't care.

Well at least UPS was good to me, got my HP keyboard and I love it. It's pretty heavy and of good construction so it works well for me.

It will get some getting used to as it's my first 'raised' keyboard with the 'chicklet' keys, but they all seem to work well and so far so good!

You're just talking to the wind calling the Fedex 800 number.

I tried to start doing business with Fedex a few months ago and literally begged the 800 number folks to put me in touch with an account rep on numerous occasions. They didn't have the slightest clue where to begin and I just gave up. I even kept repeating the fact that my employer was a $100k per year business opportunity. They showed absolutely zero interest. A few months later a Fedex account rep called me out of nowhere and she even admitted the 800 number folks are absolutely worthless and do the company more harm than good.

Oh I realize that, worst experience over the phone that I've ever had. On hold for 15 minutes then told nothing could be done. EXCELLENT haha

I know of many companies that avoid them at all costs, and hundreds of people that do. Even my girlfriend's parents' company, they only ship FedEx if it's requested, otherwise it's avoided.

There's a note on the front door for them to put the box inside, with my signature. Lets see if they mess up today.

Either way I don't have a DVI to VGA converter yet so I can't even check it out lol it'll be here Friday along with a VGA switch since my monitor only has one input and I'll be using 2 computers on it. Amazon Prime 2-day shipping FTW :D

Okay, finally got it... and nothing but bad news...

Can this be bent back? It's not noticeable with the door off, but it's going to bother me.

I'm assuming this HDD is trash.... I'll see if i can get the pins to fit in my cable to pull the data, but no way i'm keeping it in this machine. I was able to straighten the pins out a bit, but plugging it back into the machine is proving hard and the original plug it was plugged into still has the plastic pieces in it.

It does power up, the inside is clean, it doesn't fit under my desk.. it will fit aside it though so no issue here.

Casing needs a clean, but that will come.

So any thoughts on the above? Input is appreciated!

Just an update for everyone. I'm in contact with the seller, he has told me there is no OS on the drive even though the pictures showed the 'about this mac' screen and also stated it boots to the desktop fine.

He is offering to refund my money plus shipping. So I am hoping this means $91 plus shipping. Only problem is I assume shipping will be more than the original $40 he quoted me at. I had read around $70 to ship these things in some places.

If he does indeed refund me, I will be looking for another PowerMac locally and will be looking for one probably around the $150 range. Is that reasonable for a similar one?

Don't do the refund, shipping it back will cost ALOT. I had the same problem last month with someone on eBay. Your best bet: only buy from someone that will ship it in the original box. That HDD is toast. You might as well keep the G5 and do what you want with it (buy an ssd and get it running?) or try to get rid of it and buy what you want. For $150 you can find Quads or even fully loaded DCs, which will outperform your current one.

Yeah 150 is reasonable, I got my G5 for that much (look at my sig).

The metal has come apart on mine all along under the door... The only way to fix it is to completely disassemble the machine and use a mallet. (I don't have Hex drivers long enough to reach the CPU retaining screws).

I don't plan on it unless he agrees to pay the full shipping return price.

I'm hoping he'll refund me about $40. Even in it's current state, it's worth what I paid I think.

Also, that drive should be able to be used through PATA power, but no real use for it.

Another problem I have is I don't have 10.5.8, I'll have to either find someone willing to let me borrow it or buy my own copy, then sell it again.

I will be near $150 into it if I do to it what I want unfortunately.

It has just done this over normal use? This one is just about 1/4 of the way. I may try and press it back together and use some sort of glue, but not sure if that's even worth the effort since it's really not THAT bad.

I got it like that. IDK how it got like that. :(

Man that sucks, mines at least not overly noticeable when the door is off, or when it's pinched between my desks lol

Do you know if I get a Leopard install disk, the black one with the X, if I can back the disk up on another dual layer disk?

Yup. Just use Disk Utility to create a CD/DVD master image and you can burn that to any Dual-Layer DVD.

Awesome, so is it common that people buy the disk copy it and sell again? I feel like it would be common but frowned upon lol

$40 is actually pretty accurate to send it back. 55 lbs from Milwaukee to Kansas City via UPS Ground is $41.05 via their public... non discounted rate. Your girlfriend's parents probably have a UPS rate tariff in place for their business needs... so you'd probably save another 15% or so if they'd let you use their account.

How on earth did the hard drive get tore up like that? Was it mounted in the G5 correctly upon arrival? It took some brute force to get it in that shape.

So do you suspect shipping damage caused all this? How well was it packed?

This is why I don't do any of that electronic stuff and I go to a store! :D In all seriousness, some incoherent employee at FedEx probably tried to pick up the box and found it was heavy (Kind of obvious by the size). Then they probably set it down hard, causing the bent metal. At least it doesn't look like some of the PowerMacs on here with casings were the entire Mac leans over.

Really? I thought it would be way more based on the size and weight. If he sends me $20 back I'd be more than happy. He'd save money overall too. I'm away from home so away from their business, but I could do that as well. I usually don't ship stuff through there but big stuff I get free boxes and packing lol

As for the hard drive, I see no way possible that the damage happened during shipping. The SATA data connection was even pulled from the board (not damaged) and obviously the breaks on the hard drive SATA power and data.

I don't think the shipping caused the hard drive issues, but the leg issue is definitely what I would think to be a shipping issue. Luckily the damaged isn't horrible and possibly fixable with a little rubber mallet (with all drives removed), but I'm not sure it bothers me that much.

The tower itself was wrapped well in small bubble wrap and then the box was filled with packing peanuts. So it's obvious to me it was dropped in shipping on one of the corners and then bent.

Maybe... But you can always tell if a disc is genuine by looking at the color of the data side, and the feel of the label. :)

What's the difference? The label probably feels more 'papery'?

I don't buy anything in store these days, too expensive and generally much better can be found outside of the store.

I agree with that though, there seems to be many incoherent FedEx employees including the driver for my area.

Mine sadly does this. Only by a fraction of an inch though.

Mine still seems strong and doesn't look like it'll move anytime soon. Hopefully it stays that way too.

Yeah, and if genuine, the data side would look more "silvery".

Gotcha, either way I would like to find a copy just so I can get this machine up and running. Sounds like I have a 500GB Seagate 7200 drive for $20 shipped so that's just about solved.

Now to figure out the OS.

Maybe the person just got it from someone else and did not look into it and thought he can give it a try.
Since the item is not, what he described, doesn't the law say he has to take it back? I would insist on him also covering your shipping costs, because it was not your fault. He could have packed it better (styrofoam under the middle of the bottom, so that the feet have room to not make contact to the paper box already). The HDD is a no go anyway.

If you will loose any money in refunding it, I would talk him into giving you refund for the HDD (like the price of a working used one) plus a small bit of money more for the defective case and the trouble you now have.

You then can sell the Mac without hard drive (just be patient, if you do it via Craigslist) for a price at least equal to the rest of your costs.

Then reinvest into a DC G5 (or maybe quad), though a DP G5 gives you a wider graphics card choise.

Bend legs are seen quite often after shipping. I also think that most of the water pump problems in used G5s (Dual 2,5 DP and 2,7GHz DP and Quad DC) come from bad shipping.
