...Nevermind, got her to work. There's another 232GB.

Anyone know if there's a wireless storage unit that will power with PATA and get data with SATA?

What do you mean by "power with PATA" and "data with SATA"? Do you mean the big 4-Pin Molex Power connector that you can find in PowerMacs for powering IDE/PATA-HDDs?

I do not know of a special Hard Drive case that has the older power-connector + a SATA-data connector (maybe search for an older used case), but there are cases, that have data-Connectors for both PATA and SATA, these should have power connectors for both types or at least the 4-Pin-Molex known from PATA-Drives. There was such a model called "... FX" by Inxtron (they sell their stuff, also under the brand names macpower, Dinic, Umax, sometimes under Iomega and Raidsonic).

That does not help much, but that is at least a beginning, to search for.

I found this on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817801061

It has a small 4-Pin power connector on the PCB and you can choose, if you want to connect an adapter from this small 4-Pin to SATA-power- or PATA-power-connector.

Ah, wait these are all compatible (just choose PATA+SATA in the section "Internal connection") :) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...70&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

Glad you got the G5 up and running. Saw you posted about PowerBooks while I was browsing Marketplace. Guess PowerPC is growing on you! :D :apple:

I had a PowerMac G4 a bit ago, was having trouble with 10.5 and got rid of it. It's a shame too because that thing was damn clean! haha

I still have to wait for my hard drive, need that and install of the OS, hopefully that will all be done by Tuesday or so and then I'll be good to go and will post some pics.

Have to install everything, I plan on getting Mountain Leopard and TenFourFox.

Any other recommendations?

Yes: I might disable Spotlight and Dashboard for speed, and I would install MacTubes and the MacTubes Enabler for a smooth YouTube experience. I would also install OpenOffice 3 for an office suite, it's free and pretty nice. VLC Player is a good alternative for media. And when you are installing the OS, make sure to un-check things to be installed, like extra languages, more printer drivers, and so on (unless, of course, you use them!). This will give you more space and slim down your OS install.

On my PowerBook and PowerMac G5, I have the following software.

Adobe Reader 9.4.0 (Use Preview for better performance)
AppleWorks 6.3
Dropbox (Still Developed)
MacTracker 5.3 (Horribly out of date but useful for PPC Mac enthusiasts)
MacTubes 3.1.6
Microsoft Office 2004/2008 (Depending on which Mac)
OpenOffice 3.2.1 (Not sure that is the latest for PPC)
Skype 2.8.0.866
Spotify 0.6.6.10
TenFourFox 24
TextWrangler 3.5.3
Thunderbird 3.1.20
VLC

I also run Adobe CS2, GIMP 2.6.11, and Paintbrush for my graphical applications. Xcode 3.1.4 suite under Leopard for development purposes. Finally, I am using Mountain Leopard, Adobe Flash 10.1 with an updated plugin, as well as MacTubes Enabler.

I tried to include version numbers if possible so you can track them down easily.

Thank you guys so much for the input! I see a couple of helpful programs in there that I plan to use!

Is CS2 the latest that can run on PPC? I thought I read CS3, but could be wrong.

Adobe CS4 suite is the last that will run on a G4. I choose CS2 as it is lighter on resources, and I got a fantastic deal on it. Office 2008 is the absolute final version to be supported on PPC, but it includes native .docx support. If you choose 2004, you will need a free converter program available from Microsoft.

I have a copy of CS4 that I'll have to try out. I should be okay with resources hopefully.

I do have a question though. Does this look like a proper SuperDrive for this machine? The eject button seems to be missing however it does seem to open fine with a paperclip.

Button Missing:

Seems to be OEM label?

Yes, that is the proper G5 OEM Superdrive. Apple's desktop sized optical drives rarely had their front lights and eject buttons in them.

Okay, perfect. That button not being there threw me off so I just wanted to make sure haha

Thanks!

Hopefully this hard drive gets here in the next day or two so I can get rolling :D

So I've gotten the bent piece to straighten out a little bit by hand. I need a rubber mallet to gently tap a part that has bent upwards making the door slightly hard to put on.

I also should be able to squeeze it back together in a vice, hopefully, just don't want to crush it

Hopefully you guys can help me out here again. I got my PowerMac and I got the hard drive. I put the drive in today and now i'm trying to install the .dmg file of Leopard on a completely blank hard drive.

When I hold down the 'c' key it takes the disc in, spits it out and takes it in again and never loads it. When I hold down 'alt' (using windows keyboard) it loads up the option menu, shows nothing and then lets me type in the reboot command.

I have a DVD+Rdl with the operating system (10.5 retail) on it in .dmg format. When I boot I am getting the folder with the mac logo and question mark.

What possibly could be going wrong? The disc was written on a 2009 MacBook Pro. I just don't understand why it's spitting the disc out so quick.

What options could I try? I would really like to get this thing up and running tonight.

I removed the hard drive from the first slot and put it in the second slot to make sure that hard drive connection wasn't an issue. It continues to spit the disc out.

Now it's spitting the disc out just after the power button is pressed and then taking it back in immediately.

I'm going to create a new post for this as there is much confusion right now lol

So after lots of pain and suffering over this whole ordeal and realizing I couldn't boot from a different hard drive or USB I tried my last resort option.

I had a Sony drive sitting around that I no longer use, it's a DVD burner that I bought a LONG time ago. Turns out it reads and writes DVD+Rdl unlike the 'super' drive that was originally in the machine.

The door on the drive was too large, so I had to be a bit ghetto, but got it working for the install:

This had to have been good things: (blacklight leak much?)

This got me a bit more exited:

Then this... were you expecting me to fail yet? :p

It's inspecting the disc right now, then installing, I'll update you all here in a bit!

First post from my PowerMac G5!

Thank you to everyone that helped me get her running and for all of the information that you guys have provided me with!

Good job man! I've had to do all kinds of stuff like this but glad u thought of it!PPC is still useable especially with 10.5 on it and they're fun to tinker with.

What kinda stuff do u plan to do with it as far as uses?

Congrats! Have fun customizing/hunting down apps and living PPC in 2014!

Thanks! I have a few applications already, trying to get a copy of office 2008 and aperture 2.

Thanks! I've done lots of this stuff with PC's, but when it comes to Apple computers I've done basically nothing haha

I'm seeing that it's very usable, the whole Youtube thing kind of sucks, but I can work around that.

I'll probably do some minor photo editing, web browsing, listening to music and using of office products.

I might do some more later on but I have to see what this thing's capable of first haha

Office is going to be greatly inflated no matter where you go. Try Goodwill either in store or online as I have been told they carry Office sometimes. Otherwise try OpenOffice and iWork to replace Office.

I haven't been to Goodwill in probably 10 years. I didn't realize they carried laptops and all. I really need to look into what they have in my home town.

I'm kind of partial to office just because i'll be using DropBox to bounce back between all of the things between my 4 devices I use for editing.
