So even though I was having the time of my life, i decided to go back to default res. I may switch back in time but I was finding myself sitting way too close to the screen and getting minor headaches. For those of you who can handle it though, it's massively worth it.

I didn't really think about that... I did set Finder a most all of my Apps to default to larger Fonts and icons... maybe thats why mines more usable to me.

Can you set the VMWare resolution to 2880x1800? Thinking of having a Windows VM in one mission control screen and OSX in another with both having the native resolution. If you could tell that this works I'd be very grateful!!

it works fine in Parallels like that, dont know why it wouldn't work in VMWare.

Bloody brilliant! Thanks. That looks fine by my eyes!

Just to be cheeky could you take a screenshot with mission control open so I can see OSX and Windows? Like so http://imgur.com/muA0J

F3 then Cmd+Shift+3 will do it

Thanks so much, made my day!

I'm a developer, mostly Windows but love OS X so this will work great with 8GB for OS X and 8GB for Windows VM

You guys are crazy.. This is insanely small LOL, but pretty cool to see but definitely not useable day to day.

Mike

ive been using it just fine for several days.

Apple zooming helps in certain situations, and I'm already in the habit of using it a lot, so its natural to me. Safari zoom up works really good too, as you should be able to tell fro that second screenshot I posted.

Awesome! I remember tripping on my Pentium III Dell Inspiron with a 1600x1200 IBM 15" LCD over a decade ago. It's about time something higher res came out. Apple, hurry up and ship my RMBP!

Sorry, I didn't get around to trying this last night.

Yes it does work, VMWare can have the Win7 VM at 2880 x 1800 full-screen or windowed, and in its own mission control screen.

The IBM (well, IDTech - which was an IBM and Chi Mei joint venture in Japan) panel that's really interesting for laptops is the 2048x1536 IPS 15.0" panel that they did. I've got one in the (frankensteined with parts from multiple generations of ThinkPad) machine that I'm replacing with the RMBP. That thing came out early P4-era.

There's also a Sharp 1600x1200 14.1" panel that Dell used in some P3-era machines, although it's TN. Some people are sticking those in the last 14.1" 4:3 ThinkPads.

Has anyone tried to use 2048x1280 resolution? How does it look and perform? Any screenshots?

a screenshot just shows you a 2048x1280 picture... to see how it actually looks on the display you need someone with a nice camera to snap a shot.

Smaller text or bigger text?

Many knowledgeable people here it appears!

Some want smaller text with more real estate on the screen
Some want larger text for better readability

I want larger text.

This is a long thread with lots of details, so please excuse me if I have missed something.

I am happy with the text size on my old MacBook Pro, but not that on my new model under Lion. I have both machines next to each other and the text appears to have decreased about 2 point sizes over 4 years.

I know that font size is adjustable in individual apps, but that doesn’t usually change the size in the menu bars. I guess that 70% of my apps cannot be adjusted. Besides, I also run Windows under Parallels and many Windows apps also have tiny text.

Does anybody have or is anybody working on a user-friendly solution for this please? I guess a system-wide increase of approx 20% would be OK.

I still have the option to return my new HiRes MacBook Pro or exchange it for a Retina. However, I would prefer to keep mine because I want a matt screen and a DVD drive.

To avoid digression, I would appreciate on-topic responses and not persuaders as to why I should buy eyeglasses, accept a glossy screen (or add a matt film) or do without a DVD.

Thanks in advance.

So how does the picture quality of native 2880x1800 compare with the best for retina mode?

I am running 2880x1800 right now but I want to have some confirmation. If the best for retina mode still looks better than native than I am going to stick with that mode regardless if screen real estate.

What do you mean picture quality? Unlike the HiDPI modes (the mode that makes things look larger on high pixel density displays) applications actually work correctly . If you are talking about actual pictures then the quality will be just as good or better on the non HiDPI mode.

If an app does not support HiDPI mode then it gets its resolution dropped to 1/4th and scaled up making it look bad. This does not happen on the non-HiDPI mode but instead its smaller.

Some things are rendered or can be sized up in the app itself which will make them look far better than the HiDPI mode (only apps with lack of HiDPI support).

For example in microsoft office or acrobat you can have it increase text sizes and what not when running non HiDPI mode and get the text size at the size you want and of retina quality. With images its pretty dependent on the resolution of the image. If its a high resolution image then it will be the same or better in an app that does not support HiDPI mode.

Rendered things will for sure be better in non HiDPI mode if the app does not support it.

Here is an example. In HiDPI mode go to maps.google.com and enable google earth inside safari. Look at how crappy google earth looks. Now do the same at the native 2880x1800 (non HiDPI mode) and it looks awesome. Even though safari supports HiDPI google earth does not so your wasting the display on it.
