Thank you so much, you are a lifesaver!

Funny this is exactly the same file as DisplayProductID-a00e. Can someone confirm that DisplayProductID-a00f and DisplayProductID-a00e are identical?

Thanks again!

I was playing around with the custom resolutions on the last tab... so I don't recommend doing that.

Ditto, thanks, my scaling is now restored.

Word of caution: to anyone thinking of playing around with switchresx—while it exposes a lot of customization and options, it doesn't "Just work" when you uninstall it. i had to put this file in to be able to switch scaling modes, for example. don't know if it's ****ed up any other files—I'm tempted to just do a clean install.

Me too. My biggest concern at this point is the thunderbolt ethernet support. I am almost 95% sure that I will be primarily running linux on my macbook pro retina.

Even if there aren't native Linux drivers, if you're willing to run in a VM, shouldn't be a problem—the VM would only see the ethernet port.

Unlikely most VM's emulate ethernet hardware and bridge or use your onboard ethernet hardware in place (which requires a driver). Unless you mean running linux in a VM?

In that case. HAHAHA. no...

Try #1. Run the app, and you'll get a menubar icon that should let you change the resolution. Please let me know if this works - if it does, I'll enhance it more :).

Caveat: I *do not* own a Macbook Pro Retina yet, and this was tested under Snow Leopard only.

Edit: also, please post a screenshot of what the menu looks like. Thanks!

Segfaulting on launch. I can build it locally and help debug it if you'd like.

To anyone concerned with the security, I popped the binary open in IDA Pro and verified there's no suspicious linking or imports.

Haha, you dropped it into IDA Pro? My man! I do a lot of developing for the iPhone - I have no intention of ruining that rep by spreading viruses.

Anyways, I'll PM ya the code - it's messy, but maybe you can figure something out.

Edit: damn, I can't find the stupid PM button. I'm probably too new for that. Well, here's a .tar.gz. Use the ./make script tool in the MacOS directory.

I just finally saw one of these macbooks in an apple store. Wednesday can't come soon enough.

I installed SwitchResX and ran it at its native 2880x1800. Man even in safari plugins are not taking advantage. Google earth and maps was *much* clearer when not running HiDPI mode. Also the laptop was perfectly readable for me at normal viewing distances. Man I cant wait. Gonna be running it 2880x1800 24/7 with no HiDPI mode. IMHO that is what this screen was made for.

Is the screen actually useable at this resolution? I mean for example in photoshop will I be able to make out toolbars and type.

Anyone who can post some pics with full res of how adobe apps look will get +10 points and positive karma there way. This is the only thing holding me back from getting the Retina atm, looking at blurry text/ui gives me painful headaches (no really).

Enjoy. I can see everything but i'm not sure if this will accurately represent how awesome it is. Everything is very clear for me.

Eye strain.

I think this res would be fine for a 17" but 15"...I do like 1680x1050 on the 15", though.

Wow thanks man. +10 points as promised. I'm on a non retina 15" screen laptop and I can still see everything fine, can't imagine what 1:1 must be like!

Had cMBP in basket and was about to hit buy when I saw this thread...

rMBP now ordered, 3-4 weeks delivery, hopefully someone has come up with a cleaner solution to go full resolution by then.

Thanks again mate!

Oh it gets worse. If I recall, the 2880x1800 is actually a scaled res also. The native res for these screens is higher. ScreenResX lets you go to 3840x2400 on the Retina MacBook...

Pretty Cool. That image really is showing a 3840x2400 desktop!

I put it on full screen on my 27" iMac, and the "About this Mac" was exactly 2/3 the size of mine and your screen was taller (16:10 rather than 16:9 like mine). So I could tell you really had that real estate!

Though of course, it was rescaled to 2880x1800, so you lost 44% of your actual resolution. 3840x2400 is 177.8% of 2880x1800 and 2880x1800 is 56.25% of 3840x2400. It's the exactly the same difference between a cheap 1080p display and my 27" 1440p display. My 27" iMac display shows 177.8% more space than a 1920x1080p display.

It's just like putting my 27" iMac display onto a 1080p display. If everything is big enough (text, pictures) then it would look ok, but everything has to be enlarged, though you really do have the extra real estate to play with! All in all, I don't think this would be ideal. I don't think I'd like 2560x1440 desktop on a 1920x1080 display (which is exactly the same scaling you're doing with 3840x2400 desktop on a 2880x1800 display).

Moving my resolution changer to its own thread. Please give it a shot to see if you can get 2880x1800 without using ScreenResX.

Guys i have one question.
Yesterday i went to the Apple Store, and while i tried the new RMBP, i didn't understand if you can set or not the 2880x1800 resolution.
In System Preferences the best you can get is 1920x1080, am i right?
Even the best choice for retina display is not at 2880x1080, because the 1920x1080 resolution has more space than the "best choice" (that one in the middle).
Should we use a third part app, right?

Thanks :)

Yes you have more resolution choices including a 2880x1800 (with no HiDPI mode) if you run SwitchResX.

Hi guys:

Would any of you with an mbp retina and switchresx mind posting a pic of how 2560x1600 looks, please? If anything, does 2560x1600 have any blurriness at all on the retina screen?

2880x1800 seems to render all items too small for daily use; and 1920 resolution is not much of an upgrade from my current 2010 mbp with 1680x1080.

Much appreciated

Any problem with the one in the first post?

There's probably a cleaner method of accomplishing this, but I've been unable to find such readily available.

First of all, a camera shot showing the absurdly pixel-dense display in all its Retina glory inside OS X:
