Wow this thread is so long, so soon.

Could anyone tell me if the HP TouchPad is likely to have:

1. A slot for extra memory/space

2. A USB port

3. A way of transferring files directly from PC/Mac without having to use an intermediary like iTunes or such-like

Just learned that TouchPad isn't going to be out until summer.

Tech companies: APPLE ***** on you guys because they release things in a timely matter after announcement, how the **** have you not learned this yet??

HP boardroom - "Guys, we've got a great device here, you know what we should do? Demo it 6 months before we actually release it and let Apple just solidify their lead with their actual shipping product!"

"Genius! Get this man a raise!"

Dumbasses.

To give the guy the benefit of the doubt.... - the iPad has massive interest and all but guaranteed sales that would justify commissioning the suppliers to go balls-out months before the launch safe in the knowledge that they would be able to keep that pace up until the time to retool for iP2

The world was waiting for the iPad - everyone knew Jobs was making this his masterpiece and the buzz was incredible on the back of just how great thte iphone worked.

HP are announcing this MASSIVELY unsure how many pre-orders are going to rock up and can't afford to set the presses running for one capacity or another.

But yes - you are right - its another zune anonnouncement so far in advance of reality that any anticipation will have evaporated amongst other launches.

Feel sorry for the bloke.

What is so compelling about the webOS tablet exactly? You guys go gaga over some multitasking when in fact iOS' multiask suffices at best. It's cool to see cards and stacks but it seems like the tech demo revolved around the multitasking and the email client. .

Hey Mr. HerpDerp, have you ever used iOS? Do you think everything that suffices to you suffices to everyone in the world?

Meh, price is going to be key. I was excited about the Xoom until they released the price. Any tangible info on the iPad2 yet?

There's no comparison between iOS and WebOS multitasking. They nailed it pretty well in their presentation: WebOS was designed for multitasking while it was an afterthought for Apple.

WebOS devices, when plugged in, come up like a flash drive and can be used as such. The apps on the device will then search the disk for appropriate content.

Whats the thing with notifications. I dont use them so could you explain why they are bad.

They are intrusive. They pop up in the middle of the screen and completely block what you are doing. You can't ignore them, they must be addressed. This interruption can cause you to lose a game you are playing or a million other things that are sources of frustration.

Do we really need another mobile OS with it's own app structure and so on.

Now we got:
Blackberry
Apple
Microsoft
Google
and now HP sporting their own OS.

Tbh, I don't think there is a market for 5 different non-cross-compatible OS:s and at least one will go over the next year or two.
HP has a good opportunity to be successful and now that Microsofts biggest ally in the mobile market is going on its own they are gonna have problems (well, even more problems), but they've got funds to go on forever.

Actually, I love it. After well over a decade of one OS having 90%+, while Apple struggled (and Linux variants were even more scarce), it's nice to see a bunch of them again. This didn't work the first time (Apple, C64, Atari, Amiga, etc.) because they didn't use standard file formats. Now, all can play.

Isn't a fragmented world would be good for Apple, in that Android will be less likely to become the Windows of mobile gizmos?

Would you rather have them on some kind of a status bar?

You nailed it. This will be a very compelling competitor for Apple. Despite what some people on this forum think, Apple does need competition. I don't want Apple to become Microsoft 2.0.

It's reminiscent of the early PC industry where it was a fledgling market and a lot of new buyers were up for grabs. Eventually the consumers' desire for commonality and sustainability will kill some of these platforms.

I think most people would. Android uses the top status bar, WebOS uses a pop-up on the bottom. The point is that they catch your attention without demanding it or getting in your way.

So it's basically an iPad2.

I agree with others that what iOS lacks is a good notification system, and that Apple's multitasking system is cumbersome at times.

Also, I love how they list Beats audio as a point, implying that this is somehow good. Anyone who knows anything about audio knows that beats are terrible mainstream devices that really lack any sort of audio quality except for over the top bass response

Actually looks like a good competitor and something I would consider buying if the iPad didn’t exist. I think it will also be good for Apple since real competition is always a great motivator for innovation.

honestly it looks very good (of course because they got most of their design ideas from the iPad), but I want to see it in live action.

the screen shots look cool, but I wanna see how fluid the UI is.

Very interesting to see them copying the keynote style presentation that Apple does.

Every business presentation I've been at looks like this. It's a bland corporate media event - something not original to Apple.

And who cares if Apple did something first? The Palm tablet looks beautiful. If iPad 2 doesn't blow me away, I'm picking this one up without hesitation.

Everyone is missing the big picture. Does everyone think that when iPad2 comes out that iPad1 is suddenly going to disappear? My guess is Apple keeps 1 version of iPad1 around and drops the price significantly (Think $299-399) to undercut all these current products. With the prospects of selling 30m iPads in 2011, don't u think Apple has a little leeway when it comes to pricing their products.

Most individuals don't give a crap about features, price is king.

I agree Apple will offer a phase in structure.

Perhaps they will offer it's first generation 3G model with the carriers for a discount.

Then they'll offer the Wifi standalone next generation, and also the Wifi+3G with the carriers.

Another ipad killer. Apple really need to update IOS now its lacking a lot of features other tablets have and is really dated.

"...other tables have..."

HAVE?? HAVE!! Who are you talking about?? Are you referring to all the tablets that someday will be on the market?? Like that one Ballmer fumbled around with over a year ago?? Or like all the tablets shown at CES 2010 and 2011???

The HP tablet is like dang near every other tablet...it's not available to buy. It's all smoke and mirrors yet.

That battery is about the same size as the iPad's. Expect similar battery life.

I also see that HP is showing the pre3 to have a full 8-bit display like that in the motorola atrix. For comparison, the touchpad only shows a 6-bit display. To the layman, this just means the display can do more colors (and thus, higher color fidelity) and is generally indicative of a high quality screen.

Put your money where your mouth is- most of you people here who comment on how great android, how great webOS is, blah blah blah probably will never own an iPhone/iPad/iPod with iOS installed. If you did, you probably won't buy these other competing devices. Put your money where your mouth is and buy this webOS tablet.

It suffices to the MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of iOS device owners. If that's not good enough, you are among the 1% that don't like iOS devices.

Go back to 1998. And then come forward to 2011. You'll notice those business presentations mimicked Keynote after Steve brought it out and everyone was stunned at how much better his presentations were than the crap known as PowerPoint.
