All PC manufacturers are faced with one glaring similarity to each other and that is the fact that they all (for the most part) run Windows. I think this is why they get pushed to compare their products to Apple product, otherwise they're stuck talking about specs and ultimately price. And with the historical bargain basement pricing on the PC side, they know that chasing their way to the bottom of the barrel is not going to do them any favors (perhaps they've finally learned this lesson?), so they have to look to the one successful and profitable company selling computers - Apple, and try to make their products look like what Apple offers.

HAHAHA! The comments here are great.

I would have loved to have seen this announced as a new mac laptop and see all the praise that would have been heaped upon on it.

Instead it's hideous, and "that hinge" etc. It looks amazing and if they beat Apple at its own thin game, well, just another sign of what it is to be living during the time of Tim's Apple.

:D you lot...

I saw a Spectre in real life - think it's pretty similar to this, just not as thin. I was playing with it for 10 minutes in the shop, it's gorgeous in real life.

Can't speak about this new model, but the HP Spectre I played with was stunning, the keyboard was cracking, lovely screen, touchpad was very MBP like...

And Windows 10 is awesome, no idea what you lot are complaining about!! It's given a new lease of life to my work PC (7 years old).

Meanwhile, my MacBook Pro from 2012 is slowing down to a crawl, ridden with bugs and I wish to hurl it through a window. So frustrating.

There is literally no way that you are not trolling or do not live in a parallel dimension. You have exactly described, in reverse, using a windows machine and a Mac. I have a ten year old mac pro that runs like it's brand new, and I have a 2 Year old XEON workstation that crawls, crashes, and generally misbehaves.

It looks great, it has a steampunk look.

At least it offers something than the 1001 black or silver laptops out there. Believe it or not, there are capable designers that don't work for Apple and competition is good.

Yep, very true, it's like when Samsung had the large screen phones, they were met with hoots of derision, laughter and bemusement (How could you use something that monstrous to make a call, imagine using that as a camera, looks stupid etc etc ), then Apple make large screen phones and all of a sudden big phones are great.

I like Apple stuff too, but I also use Windows 10 and think it's fine, it's good to have competition, we the consumers benefit, so it's all good as far as I'm concerned.

Not too sure about that hinge, but I like the copper! Not sure it would be my first choice of material for a portable product though because when its protective coating gets knocked off it will tarnish horribly.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but it looks vaguely Steampunk to me. I can see some people I know having fun customizing it that way.

You might need to learn how to use a PC, this kind of exageration are the problem with fanboys, I love Macs, and have mostly Apple stuff, but to say that a ten year old Mac runs better than a 2 year old Worksation is delusional at best.

Put windows 10 on that machine and stop downloading porn and cracked software, you will soon see that the performance is right there, Windows PC might be far from perfect, but also far from being c**p.

And you also have the chance to try Linux, you'll be amazed!!

EDIT:
You should get back in your time machine we are not in the 90s anymore!!

There's something about the speaker grill design that bothers me. Probably because it looks exactly like a dell design to me from a few years back.

Kudos to HP!

Proof positive that it's possible to create a fresh new design.

Instead, Apple clings to the same old Matte Silver MB / MBA / MBP "look" is proof that greedy profit taking is Apple's preferred practice.

It's good to be obscenely wealthy

Lol they say it's the thinnest and fastest notebook and on the page they say it has i5 and i7 processors in it but watching the video on HP.com only shows it playing full screen video... If it packs so much power and performance show me some high performing stuff, not streaming video that a 800 Mhz machine from 1998 can do.

With intel i7 this machine is at least as capable as Macbook Air etc. They all use same CPUs.
Macbooks have better sleep function, I guess, in overall and are more robust OS

But you're quoting The Verge - unless you're saying The Verge runs ads disguised as articles, it's them who compares the laptop to Apple's. HP "only" claims their laptop is the thinnest, everybody goes and says "but what about Apple's laptops?!"..

Frankly, if we're to call HP on its insane claims, what about Apple's that the rMB is the future of notebooks?
I didn't call their claima insane i just said I think they're more than happy to have this product compared to a Mac than a better comparison like the XPS or Surface, because it gets them more attention.

Specs are impressive and it's got ports. Does it come with a can of Krylon paint so you can customize the color to something nice? With the processors they're running in it, I'd wait for reviews that discuss the heat before I jumped on one of these.

I think they did a nice job there. More than one port, and a "real" CPU.
It has it's own look; not an obvious ripoff of Apple.
Kind of like the black and copper.
Not sure about the look of the hinge, though, but being the thickest part of the computer it does offer space to put the ports.

To add to my previous comment, if there is a rumor going around that Apple will make the next gen MBP even thinner then this could be an idea of how thin to expect. That being said, I'm with maxsix, and about ready for a redesign. We need something fresh in the Apple lineup. But thank God that Windows PC manufactures have started designing things to be sexy and sleek. Now lets see this same redesign happen with those towers. The only thing remotely close is the Thermaltake Core P5.

You obviously haven't tried running virtual machines on it. It's utter tosh.
I have six VM's running on my ThinkPad, over the last several months they've been 100% reliable, fast and especially useful.

While I prefer certain aspects of OS X, Windows 10 has been a refreshing change that I find very effective.
