Why is it clever, because it includes "a pair of arcing piston hinges that fold flush for a 'nearly hingeless look' when the laptop is closed"? So they wanted it to look better closed than when it is open?
Because of how thin the mechanism is.

So balls in your court apple you have clearly been coasting on your mac product line for quite some time. Now there is some one to steal your thunder. So lets make with the thinner bezel faster sky lake macbook pro's

I'm just happy companies like HP are putting effort into design instead of shipping hunks of creaky black plastic every year. I also like that the design isn't a ripoff of the MacBook. It's a nice option for Windows users.

I'm most excited to see USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 starting to become mainstream. Once people get past the confusion they'll see how great it is.

Whenever Apple releases a super thin product everyone around here is cheering them on, but when a competitor does it all of a sudden it's questioned?

You must be reading some other web site, 80% of people on this site complain about Apple's obsession with thinness.
It's in every god damn thread.

What I find funny is how people like you distort reality to make your point.

This laptop looks fine, though I don't know if it works fine.

No,, we still question Apple laptops,,, their not left out either...

The best part is that the same company who's beating Apple at its own game is also making more powerful laptops with memory sockets, hard drive bays and plenty of ports.

You can deliver both. It's only Apple that wants to force everyone into an ultrabook.

HP...a better portable than Apple and poweruser machines too.

I wish Apple would release another computer like the cMBP. It would be a day one buy to replace my 2011 MBP.

force? is that what we are calling it ?

Apple was not the first one to create an ulta-book....Intel was..

Apple just showed others how it do it right. That's not by force.

Only read the first paragraph of this article and then stopped as I thought to myself at that point "Yeah, but it still runs Windows, though, doesn't it?" which, for many of us, is far more important than how thin it is. Don't get me wrong, I like a good looking tech device, but that extends to the OS and as Windows is so monumentally horrible I wouldn't even consider a purchase of this HP laptop.

In my opinion.
Each to their own.
Your mileage my vary
etc. etc. etc.

All these companies that boast out-doing Apple... just the very fact that they chase their designs, measurements and colors makes these companies and designs lame. When you consider the lesser software and build quality of the product, they're still considerably behind Apple. When Apple said the Macbook Air was thin, they used an envelope to illustrate the point- they used a pencil to demonstrate the thin-ness of the iPad. All these other companies are using Apple as the standard by which they measure the quality of their products, and don't even seem to get the irony. I love it. :D
You do realize that no company (well may be Samsung) is claiming anything, this are just clickbait titles right?

Lesser software is not HP's fault and it is questionable (some people prefere windows, other linux and other Mac....otherwise we would all use the same), build quality, well haven't seen this laptop, but Surface build quality is on par with Apple, you might not like the design but that is a different story.

And it is not like Apple never compared their product with others, so I guess it is part of the "game", but when Apple does it it's cool, when others to it is uncool / unprofessional....

It's still heavier than Apple. I'll take lightness over thickness if choosing.

Impressive, HP. Great job with the innovation -- that's not seen in the PC space much anymore.

Too bad you have to run Windows (or Linux) on it.

That shtick would have flown a few years ago, but not anymore. Windows 10 is a great OS, whether the crowd here (who likely have not used it) can admit it or not.
I own 2 PCs at home, I've installed Windows 10 on one of them, the other i still running windows 7 (due to hardware limitation) I agree windows 10 is a lot better but it's still the same clunky rusty windows.

I see one advantage it has over Apple's ultrathin right away.
IT HAS MORE THAN ONE PORT.

It actually looks usable as a productivity machine.

I may be a Mac user, but Apple goofed big time by only having one USB-C port on their device.
I like the design, especially how they used space by the hinge for the ports. Apple's current design doesn't allow that but they could certainly rethink some of their design to do it. Even though it has 2 USB-C ports I'd like Apple to include At least 4 so you could run displays as well as connect external devices via USB.

Still a windows system, so whats it to do with Mac Rumors ? Can it run OS X officially or has HP been bought out by Apple ?
No didnt think so.

Lol, want some more news about the "new" iphone SE, or the 9.7" ipad pro... LMAO, there is no apple news right now. get over it weirdo.

I'll take half a pound lighter over 2.5 millimeters thinner.
Don't forget the hP is at least 4-5cm wider and 2-3cm deeper than the rMB... With its 13.3" screen, it's a MBA or MBP size machine regardless of thickness. Only comparable to the rMB by the ignorant.
