That's funny! Allison Johnson is my sister's maiden name. If this exec is anything like her, God help Apple! No really, glad to see Apple is winning back old execs from other prominent companies that might bring in fresh ideas (but I really haven't seen anything great from HP lately). HP iPod (what is that?).

WOW, G5 PowerBook coming - surely she has been brought in to do the Ad's!

OK, just messing with ya, just thought I'd say it in jest before someone said it and meant it!

Gasu, thanks for the link! :) I liked that add a lot too. It didn't immediately occur to me when I started on this thread, but I do actually like a lot of the You+HP ads that they've done recently. I guess the part where I didn't immediately associate the ads with the HP name is problematic though. I think part of it is that someone else... IBM maybe (?) ... has had a somewhat similar ad campaign recently. And of course I ReplayTV through ads a lot, so I don't see a lot of them anyway. ;)

I noticed a LOT of HP + ... Posters on the London Underground in summer '04, and still a few about at Christmas... They were trying to hammer that label away!

Ok Alli listen up. Here is some free advice for your new job. Get some ads on TV!!!! that show how easy the Mac is to use. It's that simple. Start with Mac Mini commercials. My mom has a Mac Mini because I picked it out for her. If it was up to her she would have bought a PeoplePC because they advertised directly to her market segment.

By the way.....

If you think this advice is good and would like to gift an iPod to me I wouldn't be offended.

Am I the only person who thinks the iPod sillouhette commercials royally suck? God I think they are awful. Don't get me wrong I have an iPod, it's wonderful, and once it picks up the dry cleaning, perfect, but those ads...well Stinksville if I dare opine. Plus having that sellout U2 hock iPods is ghastly.

At this point any marketing would be a net positive gain from the iPod only shtick. I hate to admit it but those HP picture commercials with the Cure, now those weren't too shabby. Good tunes by a non-sellout (well, they were I guess) but waaay better. Hopefully it works on the upcoming Apple marketing extravaganza.

I mean why advertise the mini, the shuffle, if you...erm...can't even keep up with current demand? Maybe an idea would be to get those shortages ironed out before you go full bore on the marketing/advertising.

Of course it is easy with my high-powered-microscope-of-unparalleled-precision to see these errors up close and personal. Apple, your move.

Where's Fatboy Phil goin'?

I must say he does a terrible job when it comes to the general consumer and Mac OSX. I really cannot comment on education sales and enterprise, though. It seems that those markets are growing, although almost zero to less than 1 is considered growth.

I like Phil Schiller. His demo of Pages at MWSF 2005 was great and really informative. :) At least a nice break from Jobs' familiar presentation style.

What about Phil ???

Philip W. Schiller-Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing

Allison Johnson, Vice president of worldwide marketing communications

Is she taking his job??? I kiinda liked him, I know job titles can be missleading in actual job responsibilities, but perhaps she will handle the companies overall mesage

I should add that I did like the Think Different campaign. I liked the use of historical figures. It was a very high quality, high brow campaign . Unfortunately that does not sell product though. Apple does need to spend a lot more time on TV though.

More than ads

Remember that marketing encompasses a whole lot more than just ads and advertising. A marketing person is concerned with a product's image, how it's presented to the public, logos, logotype, slogans, and lots of other stuff. A lot of times, marketing people will coordinate side activities that give a product and company a boost in visibility (i.e., charitable work, events, etc.) I really doubt we'll see too much change to Apple's advertising style (and c'mon... can you really say their ads are all that bad given how things are going these days?)

You're not the only one... though the Balmer version was cool... :D

Aside from possible experience brought in, can anyone that knows let us in on how this could be a good thing? Any examples?

agreed. fiorina has been a huge value destroyer, second only to schremp of daimler chrysler- how someone who has worked that closely to her, could not believe in the things fiorina did, and not be influenced in her future thinking and decision making by the events at hp, is hard to explain away. thus, this is no good. the hp leper colony begins to seep out into the real world now arrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh :D

At face value, this sounds like a good thing. I'm going to refrain from giving this a positive or negative rating for now because I know practically nothing about "Allison". Does anyone here know if "Allison" knows how to deal with Steve Jobs' personality?

All I know about Alison comes from Elvis and it seems fairly apt (from Steve Jobs' perpsective maybe)

Oh it’s so funny to be seeing you after so long, girl.
And with the way you look I understand
That you are not impressed.
But I heard you let that little friend of mine
Take off your party dress.
I’m not going to get too sentimental
Like those other sticky valentines,
’cause I don’t know if you’ve been loving somebody.
I only know it isn’t mine.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh,Alison, my aim is true.

Well I see you’ve got a husband now.
Did he leave your pretty fingers lying
In the wedding cake?
You used to hold him right in your hand.
I’ll bet he took all he could take.
Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking
When I hear the silly things that you say.
I think somebody better put out the big light,
Cause I can’t stand to see you this way.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, alison, my aim is true.
My aim is true.

Really great ad idea

Ambrose Chapel said:
they can have an ad showing someone with a PC, deleting viruses, clicking to close pop-ups, watching spyware take over, then calmly unplugging everything from the PC, taking it away, returning with a mini, plugging everything back in to the mini, and getting on with their day.

That's perfect!!! You should write ad copy for a living! The ad title could be "Simplify."

ads

It's funny reading everyone's post. One person says to bring back the "Think Different" ads, and another says they suck.

Me personally, I like the non-mainstreem of Apple & Mac. The occasional ad that keeps the pressence.

I think this johnson woman will be good for apple.

Ultimately, it's still going to come down to Jobs to make the messege.

She just got 45 million for being fired after 5 years. Corporate america at its best. Screw the workers as usual and reward CEO's even for being fired. 45 million is amazing when they cant give a worker a nickel, and are taking away benifits at every chance so they can pay for some more of these CEO types. This is why we need some brakes on these CEO pay checks or force some better wage for the people who make the company go not the committe and boardroom types. They are stealing from the companies, the workers and stockholders in my view. Free market gone crazy.

I really like that idea. Apple should actually turn to us to get ideas for their commercials. We probably have better ideas combined than they do. Also, we know PC users personally, and many of us were former PC users, so we have a better idea of what a PC user can relate to.

Sorry, but if you think that we're the demographic Apple wants (and is) to sell to, you're sorely mistaken. We're young, cheap/ broke, critical, extremists that are so far removed from mainstream we have no idea.

I think apple should start making ads on what the computer actually does instead of advertising moslty on looks.

How about having a Mac user and a PC user on the phone talking to each other, talking about doing stuff, but the PC user can't because he's busy "managing" his PC... And at the other end of the line, you got the Mac user wondering what's happening on the PC user side.

And at the end, the PC user just turns off his PC, telling his Mac friend he's getting over his house 'cause it'll "simply be faster this way".

:D
