Unlike Apple,..

It's funny, yet sad, how things get announced & they don't get to even sell it in the future?
As soon as everyone is happy, 3 months go by and they hear nothing about it anymore. I hate this!
So, i'd say HP will fail at this one.. I have a feeling.
:apple:

Will be interesting how they will undercut the $499 price.

the cost of apple's components are between $200-$270 by best guestimates. If they have to pay Microsoft for an OS, there goes a chunk of money. Add in all the other factors, and no revenue from something like the App store, and it means that any such device would have to be on significantly inferior hardware to undercut the base iPad on price.

But I am sure it will have a camera!

They won't be able to undercut it on the same level of tec, period. They already charge $120 for 3g in their netbooks. If they manage to add any decent powered arm cpu (and recompile win 7 for it, or something) then there's no way as well to undercut it. Apple has painted everyone in a tight corner by lowering the sale price so much. Very smart strategy. Ultimately they will offer something with no ips screen, cheapo plastics, one of the atrocious atom cpus or a lower specked arm, slower flash storage, less ram, and then add in a sd card slot, a cheapo camera and flash video support and claim it as more versatile than the ipad, whilst sporting a price that will be marginally lower than the ipad by 5-10%. But going on a specification by specification basis if they do manage to release an equally capable device (which they won't cause that is not their strategy) they don't stand a chance to sell it at a lower price because apple has excellent bulk deals for flash and screens, and in house development for arm and excellent deals with samsung again for their manufacture. So they 'll just sell something cheaper and crap in terms of specs and build quality. As per usual...:apple:

In any case it's all vapourware at the moment...

What is the author of this article taking about regarding Win 7? It's wonderful as a tablet OS. I use it every day with tablet functionality on my Lenovo X200 Tablet.

By the way, Apple will get credited for inventing the tablet. I've used tablets for over 6 years.

Isn't that funny? Oh well. Large iPhone wins, I guess.

Couldn't say it better. Completely agree.

My personal opinion; these tablet devices will fall into a very very small niche of people's laps. NetBooks completely overpower these things (especially the iPad) in all areas of use.

In 18 months netbook sales will have dropped 85% from where they are now. If not worse.

Netbooks are underpowered and useless notebooks/laptops. They serve no niche in the market. They just show that there is a demand for a more portable and more useful device, which the netbook is not.

And I can multi-task, watch Flash and install anything I want! Choice is good, very good.

You may have choice with HP, but you'll lack content!!! No app store, no itune like integration!! Also, if HP is going to price low, there may be NO optical drive. It may have usb, but it will be more steps to install and third parties would have to provide products in usb form. Plus, I would like to know about the battery life, etc.

I understand you're confused,

but, as you said, we'll see.

You really think there'll be a 'tablet' with 'no limitations' - you're going to be very disappointed :D

haha I mean in the realm of APPLE carefully-chosen limitations. I realize no device is going to be out-of-the-box perfect.

But Steve Jobs -- like always -- purposely holds back. If it's not the lack of camera, it's the childish, petty refusal to accept flash... like 75% of the world's Internet does.

Could you imagine a world where the Internet refused to play ball w/ iTunes (75%)????

No surprise here. Leave it to the Wintel crowd to move into anything that is a new form factor trend. I bet it will run Windows Mobile 7 on an Intel Atom.
You mean move back to a form factor that Wintel machines almost every company had, but now with update features.
Base on the pics the Slate will run Windows 7, if we are lucky it could be using the Tegra 2 cpu.

Ahhhh, yes. The Garden Of Eden. Oh, heck... the HEAVEN known as iTunes. Yes, I think it is fair that there be a one-stop shop monopoly to buy all media content, so long as it's ran by Apple. lol Get out of town! :p

By all means-- let's cut down any competitor to the iTunes store right at the knee before they have a chance to grow. A monopoly is good. Why 100% of the computer-using world should use Windows. Hey, wait a minute... then how could there ever have been an Apple Computers company to grow and give an alternative? Mmm-hmm.

Some true, but there is a version of iTunes that runs on Windows. I wouldn't expect an optical drive. Most software I install on a computer is downloaded, legally at that. The software that isn't downloaded over the internet tends to to be brought in from a copy on a local server over the network. So no, software doesn't have to be on USB. There's still an issue of installing the operating system, we'll see how they handle that. I wouldn't be surprised if it offers a way to install from a networked optical drive much like how the MacBook Air does it, the Air is a machine without an app store or built-in optical drive.

I thought HP was going to be the quality entry in windows tablet sweepstakes, but if they are going to try to undercut Apple, then this is just going to end up being another Archos 9 debacle.

Unless the reason they are talking about 3G is that they will undercut Apple but you have to get get a 2 year $50/month data contract.

Still nothing to go on...

I still think Android tablets will be the real competition.

Still, opinions nonetheless.

If you'd like to call that 7th-grade-level (isn't that the age when kids are talking about "wet dreams?") drivel opinions, well...that's your opinion. ;)

I'll add this one as well. I think we should be able to see "ignore counts" for trolls, it would make the decision easier.

MacRumors could help out with the troll problem by implementing some kind of downranking system.

This whole thing is getting more interesting by a day! :)

Here is my position:

- I have iPod Touch 2nd gen and love it, however, in about 1 year time I will need to replace it with something else...

- I would like a device that offers same things iPod Touch does at the moment but would also like screen to be little bit bigger. Approximately 5 or so inches in size would be about right since this way device would still be truly mobile... (as in pocket size)

- Having in mind slightly bigger screen this would mean I would browse web more frequently which again means plug-in support (from Flash onwards)

- music player, video player, full web support, email, phone, msging, notes, calendar etc... goes without saying - but few decent games and cool applications would be great too!

Now, when it comes down to Apple's iPad - even blind man could see potential there, however, it simply isn't device for me...

1. It's way too big

2. It looks like its not going to support the type of web browsing I need for work (no plug-in support)

So iPad is unfortunately out for me...

Dell Mini 5 - looks like closest thing - but will not be buying it blindly that is for sure. Will have to read some reviews first and see it in action before making decision...

HP, Acer, Sony, M$ etc... - bring it on! :)

More choices the better!

If its running windows 7 who needs iTunes integration when you can actually run iTunes on it.

I dunno the Lenovo S10-3t looks like a pretty interesting tablet in my mind with a nice feature set specially if they can add Ion2 to it.

Absolutely.

Slashdot was essentially unreadable several years ago. They eventually instituted a downranking system, and now the site is actually bearable.

Almost all of the major technology news sites will need to implement a downranking comment system as most of these sites are being overrun by brain-damaged juvenile commenters. The decline has really become evident starting with the explosion of the rumors of the iPad before its announcement.

I would say that 97% of the comments here today are written by people who live in a f-cking dreamworld where the laws of physics and/or economics of consumer electronics manufacturing have been suspended. I wish these people would confine their activities to Digg, YouTube, Boing Boing, or Yelp.

I was a little disappointed when the specs for the ipad ( and the name announcement) came out !

I'm tired of being held hostage ... Stuck in the middle because steve doesn't like flash... Because I'm not allowed to jail break my iPhone because it's Steves baby and he tells me how I can use it! I love my MacBook ... But only because it's not locked down ...

I bought the gf a netbook yesterday ... I must say with it's cobbled together os ( win 7 ) IT still manages to get the job done ... And even though it's costantly looking for a solution to a problem ... It does what I want!

If steve doesn't start giving the people what they want ... A cobbled together netbook at half the price is still a better value than a crippled os ...

It's a sad day :-(

You don't want to do that.

Well there is the Android running Archos 5, and is the only one right now to have codec support no other Android device uses(except for Samsung Galaxy which also has native divx support but that is about it). Only downside is the fact it uses a different app store than the standard Android one. Not to mention the SQ is average(pretty much equal to the Touch).

Just a side note ... But if your gadget of choice runs a full os you don't need an app store .... There are already millions of compatible programs ... And not just what apple authorizes !!!!! :)
