Here's hoping the Slate is awesome and gives Apple a run for their money.

manhattanboy, don't get too excited. Have a think about HP's product design history before you have a mini orgasm over the thought of an HP tablet.

We have an HP laptop at work. It looks like it was designed and built in the 1980's stone ages. In fact it has all the allure and weight of a 1" thick block of slate. If it fell on your toes you'd lose at least 4 of them. Maybe that's why they're calling it the 'Slate'?

go buy a modbook, it's a tablet with full Mac OS X on it.

this should be an automatic reply in the forums!

The reality is people were hoping for a cut price OSX tablet and are not willing to pay the premium for the modbook, ergo they donot want/need it enough or they would be buying them!

Do you realized that when you say FREE CONTENT you mean STEALING? If you don't pay for content that's what you are doing: STEALING.

That's why the better option on a tablet was the iPhone OS, everything you put on it either you pay for it or Apple let you have it for free.

This is a business not a MUG meeting no more.

What is the author of this article taking about regarding Win 7? It's wonderful as a tablet OS. I use it every day with tablet functionality on my Lenovo X200 Tablet.

By the way, Apple will get credited for inventing the tablet. I've used tablets for over 6 years.

Isn't that funny? Oh well. Large iPhone wins, I guess.
No, like the iPod and iPhone before it, Apple will get credited for bringing the tablet out of the geeksphere and into the general consumer's domain, bringing greater awareness(and therefore sales) for all.

Or full OS X on a tablet is needed by only 0.0000000000000001% of Mac users.

Here's the problem I'm having with this...

If someone wants OS X on their iPad (or iPhone for that matter)...OK, do it. What are you waiting for? As Apple would say, " There's an app for that!"

Jaadu has been in the App Store for some time now. It's a brain-dead easy VNC client that connects remotely to your desktop computer giving you full access to OS X. It's a little slower on 3G but on WiFi there is virtually no lag.

Next complaint please?

The iPad differentiates itself by not only the hardware form factor, but the library of content that is distributed by the AppStore, iTunes and the yet to be seen iBooks. What makes the iPad special is the CONTENT, and thats why people buy iPods and iPhones.
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

Thank God a few people in this thread get it. LMAO

What they actually wanted was a cheap OS/X sub-notebook (AKA netbook). Something Apple has already stated they don't know how to build without simultaneously making it a piece of junk.

Apple's response was to build an inexpensive device that can perform the same functions without requiring full-on OS/X and all the hardware requirements that come with it.

Given what I would want a Netbook for, this makes perfect sense. Apple defined a target demographic that doesn't happen to include people that care about having a full-featured OS in a small $500-800 device. You still get the web via WiFi/3G, you still get e-books and music, you can even produce simple documents and slideshows on it, you just don't get a full macbook-like computer.

So i'm with you - if that's what they wanted, I'm sorry they are disappointed, but really - they need to get over themselves. This product wasn't made for them. They need to buy something else and move on.

All the more reason to hold fire on buying an iPad.
As much as I want one, and will get one, I'll wait till a few months after launch. Want to see what 4.0 brings to the iPhone and ultimately iPad.
Also by then, it'll be much clearer exactly what uses the thing will have given the upcoming rush of apps that will have launched at that point.
Not gonna rush this one

That's a totally naive calculation! Speak after me: Product costs are MUCH more than the mere sum of its manufacturing cost!

God, I have been through this so many times that I stopped caring. I said what those "naive" people at various places calculated. They might be better informed than us, otherwise we would be writing those pieces and not having this pointless discussion here.

I accept that there are other costs too and even some that you failed to mention. BUT THE POINT IS THAT APPLE IS PRETTY FAR FROM MAKING A LOSS ON THESE DEVICES. Furthermore, competition can drive prices even lower.

Could we now please stop with urban legends of Apple having 55% profit margin? People claiming this based on iSuppli breakdowns simply have NO CLUE of proper cost calculation...!

Anyway, at least with you I don't have to argue, which accountancy method defines overheads in what way. As you presented your argument, I assume that I studied more economics and management than you have.

But even with those 55% margin, nobody claimed it to apply to Apple in general. But again, whoever came up with the actual figure of the top-end iPads and the 55% margin on the manufacturing cost, probably had more insight than you or I would have.

That is what I'm thinking. Some geeks want notebook in a tablet form for few bucks. And they create such wave of dissatisfaction that people really start to think that iPad really sucks.

Apple should just cut HP (and everyone else off) at the path. Since Apple hasn't started shipping yet, great time to announce that it's including 3G on all models at the original WiFi model price. So, $499, $599, $699 for the respective 3G models. No WiFi models available.

Based on Apple's comments they intend to price aggressively, and the iSupply guesstimate that the 3G component + installation costs around $26, Apple wouldn't be taking a hit that would really affect profitability. It would, however, make competitors resemble the Black Knight in Monty Python's The Holy Grail.

For how long do we think Jobs will charge people $130 for $10-$15 worth of 3G parts?

Here's hoping the Slate is awesome and gives Apple a run for their money.
Not going to happen. Here's why. The hp slate is a gimmick. HP is just riding the tablet craze like those folks that put goji berry in their multi vitamins. Apple has a clear vision beyond a tablet while all the other so-called tablet vendors do nothing more than pimp the form factor with good ole win 7 up its a**. Steve Jobs is making the rounds and pressing the flesh to ensure his vision gets the most bang for its r&d bucks. I don't see anyone from HP doing what Jobs is doing. Do you?
When Jobs is done and the ipad gets rolling Apple will kick a** while the competitors duke it out their usual way. One upping each other with new iterations of their s***. There will be one ipad a year while Acer, HP etc drop multiple units monthly to keep up with the joneses. Apple will be in a league all its own. Apple has the technology, the OS and the f****** gumption to be different, go slow and develop a serious product for the times. To hell with the HP slate. HP can't even make decent graphing calc anymore. They are the same innards in a different case. Has been that way for 20 years.
IMHO of course.

For as long as Apple can. Question is, can they? Personally, it's a deal killer, and I don't know if Apple really thought the ramifications of charging so much for 3G were. Including 3G on all models = more opportunity for impulsive music/mag/book/app buys on iTunes.

I'll be buying the WiFi model.

It's amazing to see all these companies clamouring to make a competing device yet at the same time, Not do so.

The iPad is a whole new category of device entirely because of the OS. What these companies are planning to release is simply a revamp of the tablets they released 7 years ago. They failed as a product for many reasons and i believe that is why apple chose not to go down that path.

The iPad isn't for everyone (although apps can easily change that) but for those who would make use of the device it will be a very welcome alternative to lugging a full laptop device around when all you need it for can be filled by such a small, sleek device.

The features some people are asking for are those that made the tablets of col cumbersome and a waste of time. If you really want 72 USB slots, multi-tasking an unnecessary full OS and a 30 min battery life then why didn't you just buy a tablet 7 years ago and be done with it.

...

If HP uses the Atom and intel integrated graphics it will suck just like all current netbooks suck. They need to use some type of nvidia graphics chip and a fast dual core ULV processor, Apples OS is optimized for low power cpus, windows is not, HPs needs to feel as fast as Apples and also have comparable battery life or its in trouble.

Whoopee! At last common sense is breaking through. In fact many of the posters on the last couple of pages "get it".

A few months ago, I was offering wagers that Apple would not make a tablet. When the iPad was announced (and, inevitably, oozed appeal), I couldn't understand how I could have got things so completely wrong. But then the penny dropped - Apple have NOT introduced a tablet, they have defined a completely new type of device.

Which is why so many people on this forum (bear in mind it is MACRumours) are disappointed - it is very, very definitely not aimed at them.

Couldn't say it better. Completely agree.

My personal opinion; these tablet devices will fall into a very very small niche of people's laps. NetBooks completely overpower these things (especially the iPad) in all areas of use.

Lol some of you are so clueless it hurts just to read here.

There really is no excuse for the disappointment anymore, as it shows a complete lack of understanding and common sense. People that are still whinng because they want something else, something fictional and unrealistic, really shouldn't even be allowed to continue posting. It's been almost a month. Time to move on.

Even these PC manufacturers don't get it. They are the same whiny know-nothings that populate this forum. They don't want to give up sales to Apple, but their response to re-release the same tired and pointless product, full windows on a limited clunky hardware.

Has anyone ever wondered why Apple chose such vague, nonspecific dates (60 and 90 days) for when the iPad is scheduled to be released? They have to be ready for sale or they would have given a specific date for release. This has to be gauge competitor's response and be able to lower the price if necessary to cut into that competition. Could be a smart move if that's actually the reason...

How is 60 days from the day of announcement (or from any given date for that matter) non-specific?
