Has anyone ever wondered why Apple chose such vague, nonspecific dates (60 and 90 days) for when the iPad is scheduled to be released? They have to be ready for sale or they would have given a specific date for release. This has to be gauge competitor's response and be able to lower the price if necessary to cut into that competition. Could be a smart move if that's actually the reason...

Or...or...maybe they had to "pre-announce" because they were ready to hand over their application for FCC approval which would become public information at some point. Apple doesn't know what day it will get approval + they have to ramp up production, which will take some time since it's a new product. That is why the 60 and 90 day delay -- which is shorter than it was for the iPhone.

I finally got around to watching the demonstration of the HP product
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J05Q-Hyr1v8

There isn't much to go from, but hey, it might work well. Now we'll have to see how the final products look and work for a good comparison.

Apple makes its money on the hardware. So far, iTunes isn't a big moneymaker, it is a loss leader, except without losing money.

I always hear about how Apple makes money off iPods/iPhones and that the iTunes store only breaks even. I find this hard to believe, maybe it was like that in the beginning, but how can you be the number one music retailer in the entire world (besting the wal-mart giant) and only break even with sales? I'm sure iTunes has larger profits off it's store than mos are led to believe.

Apple should just cut HP (and everyone else off) at the path. Since Apple hasn't started shipping yet, great time to announce that it's including 3G on all models at the original WiFi model price. So, $499, $599, $699 for the respective 3G models. No WiFi models available.

Based on Apple's comments they intend to price aggressively, and the iSupply guesstimate that the 3G component + installation costs around $26, Apple wouldn't be taking a hit that would really affect profitability. It would, however, make competitors resemble the Black Knight in Monty Python's The Holy Grail.

This would be a good decision regardless of competition. As aggressive as the iPad pricing appears, it needs to be a little bit better for 3G. Your post has it precisely, Wifi pricing for 3G included. No premium. After all, monthly 3G IS a premium cost, so why hit people for 4-9 months worth of data just for the privilege?

What a mistake Apple has made here. Any figures for the typical iTunes Store Customer who has an iPhone vs. iPod Touch. Just a guess, but I'd bet iPhone customers spend a hell of a lot more. And I'd be willing to bet the iPad will follow the same pattern. 3G connectivity = a lot of spur of the moment purchases.

Unfortunately there isn't much in the iPad itself to compete with. Price and brand apart.

You honestly believe that a device that thin, light, with that large of a screen, and that kind of battery life, with JUST the Apps on the Home Screen (forget the 150,000 others and growing) is not much to compete with? Fantasy land has good weather this time of year.

It is quite possible that the extra fluff in price for the 3G model goes directly to AT&T to help them justify the low Month-2-Month fee for iPad customers. I hate component price v.s. retail comparisons as it only tells 1/3 (if you are lucky) of the story when it comes to cost to bring goods to market.

Me too

LOL! I'm in the Hater camp when if comes to the iTampon...
So disappointed; where's snow leopard on this portable? That's what I really want.

Yes, I too don't get up and droll over Steve Jobs and every product Apple releases. That makes me a "hater" too I guess.... (Even though I probably own more Apple products than most of the "non haters")....

Those guys can enjoy their iPad with it's inability to view 85% of the web property, cell phone OS, and a stripped down version of an office suite that no one uses. (Oh and don't forget iFart!!!!)...

My personal opinion; these tablet devices will fall into a very very small niche of people's laps. NetBooks completely overpower these things (especially the iPad) in all areas of use.

With the exception of the "mobile" aspect, of course. Show me a $500 or less netbook running a full OS that will give you 10 hours of full screen h264 video playback. Without needing to be recharged at some point during that period.

Are there any netbooks in that price range that you can use for 10 hours doing anything without having to plug in? I'm not saying there isn't, I'm actually curious if anyone knows of one.

Thin, light, large screen, battery life, just apps on the home screen: exactly! Not much here! Ah, regarding the 150,000 and growing apps you forgot to mention that over 99% of those are useless.

In 18 months netbook sales will have dropped 85% from where they are now. If not worse.

Netbooks are underpowered and useless notebooks/laptops. They serve no niche in the market. They just show that there is a demand for a more portable and more useful device, which the netbook is not.

Uh Huh. My useless netbook has a 160 gig HDD, and a 1.6 gig processor. And it runs real applications. How I wish it cost $200 more, didn't have a webcam for video conferencing at work, was a bit slower, had a 16 gig flash drive, and didn't run real applications...

Oh I know, it's "Clunky" and "Junky", and not so "elegant" and "delicious looking". Yeah, thats what sells computers - pffffttttttttttttttt

Yes people only think about Ghz, GB, and other numbers.

So 85% of the "web" is Flash eh? Riiiiiiight. Flash can s**k it. I have it completely disabled.

Just googling 'netbook 10 hours' yields a gazillion of them.

Just to be clear...that price is essentially made up since no one in the world has done a teardown. And of course, the component price is not the cost of the thing anymore than the cost of a book is just the paper and glue. Is the component cost of a microchip the price of sand...or is there maybe something more to it?

I think it is amazing that when the iPad came out everyone was shocked at the price, but now it is suddenly overpriced and a ripoff. The thing is still a steal. I wish it were an inch or two bigger, but the price is pretty amazing.

most of these including the ipad are being marketed to be used on your couch instead of a laptop or desktop. or in starbucks. there are electrical outlets everywhere so 10 hours of battery is a worthless feature.

i can run the battery down in my iphone in a few hours. i don't care since i'm always charging it

Apple will sell the iPad in March for $499 as planned, and the 3G model for $629 in April. If they do not sell as many as they would like, within a certain time frame, then they will drop the price. They did the same thing with the iPhone, remember? Hopefully early iPad adopters will get the same $100 iTunes card as the early iPhone adopters did.:D

The question is, will the iPad generate as much frenzy as the iPhone, now that Apple's strategy of sell high then drop the price 3 months later is realized? And if you think that only tech-savvy folks know about this strategy you're wrong, because it's being highly publicized this time around. Not to mention, many of us are still in an economic recession on a local and personal level.

Don't get me wrong, they will sell millions of iPads. Just how many millions, within the first few months, has yet to be determined. Personally I'm waiting until July/August, if they do not sell well. This will also give 3rd parties the chance to develop some decent iPad specific apps and get the competition to make Apple drop their prices.;)

Its the experience of using that sells.

And :apple: spend as much on the interface experience as the external design

People love the iphone because it doesn't need a manual - it does the simple things very well.

The iPad follows the same philosophy and throws in the myriad of options that multi touch promises.

If i was going back to uni, would i want an underpowered laptop or an oversized iphone?

Personally - based on ease of use - i would go for the iPad, others will have other priorities.

Tried a new compaq laptop and my moms new white macbook in the same day - the difference in the trackpad experience was shattering.

Other tablets will be seen as Apple copycats by the non techie consumers, some are similar in appearance as it is.

Like many, I believe Apple's advantage is in the App Store.

And.....

I think Apple didn't show us their full deck.:D

Well said, I would guess that Steve would never come out and give away all the goodies so easy. Plus this is only first Gen, I figure by years end who knows what that iPad OS will be able to do. :D

Well if HP's new "Slate" is anything like the HP laptop I own, the wireless card will die just after the warranty is up and it will be glitchy and ill thought out. My HP is a piece o' sh*t. We also have HP's at work and they are horrible, plastic piles of cheap garbage that are always breaking.
