Win based Tablet = Joke

It's obvious that a Windows based tablet is going to be a piece of junk because Microsoft has basically given up on the idea themselves. They've had years to make a really slick tablet-based OS and they haven't really done anything with it. The manufacturers want to jump on the Tablet platform now that Apple has got in but they won't have the same success because Microsoft refuses to make innovations for the tablet form factor. Just look at their new mobile OS..."Windows PHONE" in the name they are saying that this cool touch interface is only going to be for phone devices and therefore if you have a tablet have fun using your "Stylus" to tap on the decade-old start button.

I can sympathize with those that want the iPad to have more flexibility and power. However, I think it's going to be hilarious when all these windows lovers get their "Slate" and soon as it boots up they have to download antivirus updates, antispyware, the latest service pack, popup reminders from the taskbar to activate software, reminders to reboot in 10 minutes, and all the other "fun" BS that goes into owning anything M$. All of a sudden the computer is the boss telling you what to do instead of the other way around.

I think the iPad will improve greatly as time goes on, but as it stands right now it's already going to provide a far better experience than any other competitor because Apple cares about the end user experience and M$ doesn't. I think power and flexibility will come later..just be patient. :)

I guess it all depends on what Mobile OS 4.0 offers. In its present form, Mobile OS 3.0 is not good enough for a tablet device. I need to be able to use it as a mass storage device and be able to transfer files via USB. At work, I don't have WiFi. I need another way to transfer files on and off besides WiFi (or emailing). 2nd, it depends on battery life.

I think if you want to hack around on a tablet, the iPad is not the right choices. An infinate number of applications from an infinate number of skilled and unskilled developers following THEIR own standards you will have an infinate number of issues.
Every beginner gets free dev tools from Apple with every Mac. So everyone can create really cool Apps or just B U L L S H I T.
Does your Mac have "an infitine number of issues"? I don't think so.

Anyway, it is a good idea to offer a central store with quality approved software. But why force everyone to use it?

I was a little disappointed when the specs for the ipad ( and the name announcement) came out !

I'm tired of being held hostage ... Stuck in the middle because steve doesn't like flash... Because I'm not allowed to jail break my iPhone because it's Steves baby and he tells me how I can use it! I love my MacBook ... But only because it's not locked down ...

I bought the gf a netbook yesterday ... I must say with it's cobbled together os ( win 7 ) IT still manages to get the job done ... And even though it's costantly looking for a solution to a problem ... It does what I want!

If steve doesn't start giving the people what they want ... A cobbled together netbook at half the price is still a better value than a crippled os ...

It's a sad day :-(

"If steve doesn't start giving the people what they want..."

I'll answer you with this :

“If I'd asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse. " Henry Ford.

The real revolution of the ipad are his limitations. And that's why it will work much better than other tablets. Because it will do few things. Incredibly well.

No. I like competition. Plus. the iPad is not that revolutionary. It's an iteration that other manufactures have pursued.

One could argue that the invention of wheel wasn't revolutionary (pun intended)

It was the invention of the CART that really set the world in motion.

Apple just have a habit of taking a piece of technology and simplifying the experience of using it.

Which is why the iPhone revolutionised the smartphone market.

there had been other multitasking devices out for years - but not none that you could hand over to your mum and let her have a go.

Likewise iPad - this is genius device for people who want a web browsing, film watching, music listening, game playing, emailing and word processing machine that you can <gasp> turn on and off like a calculator.

If that concept doesn't elicit a sigh or relief - then the iPad is not for you.

Good for you. On a netbook though?

Maybe you need to make a better living and buy a full size laptop - Can't imaging its much fun hunching over a tiny screen all day.

Why don't you do a little checking and see what PMP certified Engineering schedulers with 30 years years experience earn before making such a silly statement. Trust me there little boy, I can buy what I want for my company.

And yes, a NETBOOK. I own several desktop and notebook machines, but the netbook is perfect when I travel onsite.

You obvious have no idea what you are talking about and just want to "Apple this and Apple that".... Pffttttttttttttttttttttttttt

And :apple: spend as much on the interface experience as the external design

People love the iphone because it doesn't need a manual - it does the simple things very well.

The iPad follows the same philosophy and throws in the myriad of options that multi touch promises.

If i was going back to uni, would i want an underpowered laptop or an oversized iphone?

Personally - based on ease of use - i would go for the iPad, others will have other priorities.

Tried a new compaq laptop and my moms new white macbook in the same day - the difference in the trackpad experience was shattering.

You have hit it on the head. Keep in mind I have been using computers since 1970 or so, and I have seen it all.
I had to get the first Touch I purchased replaced under warranty, it had a touch screen failure. while I was waiting at the Apple store I played with the various computers they had set out. I have not used an Apple computer since the Apple II I had back in 1982. Two things just blew me away, the keyboards and best of all the track pad. If I could fit an Apple keyboard to my present PC (I have always assembled my own) it would have long since do so. But the track pad on the Macbooks holy cow they are the most responsive I have ever used. Most PC laptops such as the Dells I have at work I forget the crappy track pads they have and just plug in a mouse. If I ever get a Macbook I don't think I would need to. There are times when I don't want to mess around with a computer and for me getting decadent on the bed listening to a audio book or podcast with my three Irish Terriers snoozing around me using my Touch is just the ticket for relaxing, and the iPad will do the same thing only better. Now back to more iCrabs.

Wow... that sounded arrogant and harsh both sides... I'm no moderator, but we should all be cool, shouldn't we?

I defy anyone to see the video showing what the Courier device might be like, and not be impressed.

For something that really worked as well as the Courier vids show, I'd pay twice what Apple are charging for the iPad.

Seriously

When the original iPhone came out without apps, even though it was an amazing new type of phone you did kind of run out of stuff to do on it other than email/music/web after a while. It was only when the apps came out for it that it showed what an amazingly versatile piece of technology it was.

Wait 6 months until some of the devs have had a chance to write some more of these apps specifically for the iPad and I bet people will stop b1tching about what it can't do and see the potential for what it can do.

Chris Breen from macworld said that as an example if they had an app for it where you had some virtual decks on there and could connect it to some mp3 mixing software you would have the most amazin controller to plug into (or connect over wifi) you laptop where you could have different screens for sliders etc. To buy that kit alone would be hundreds of $ and that would be all it did. Even if you had to pay $50 for the app it would still be worth it.

Random Thoughts

To people who want to put down the iTunes App store:

Someone said that 99% of the 150,000 apps on the App store are total crap -- If that is true, then there are 1500 apps that are good. I think having a selection of 1500 apps that are really good, easy to buy, easy to install, and cause ZERO problems with your OS when installed is VERY IMPRESSIVE! Looking at the cost of those apps, most of which are UNDER $3, and it is even more impressive.

To people who say they want to run a full open OS:

Well, buy a netbook, Windows Tablet, or a MacBook. I don't understand why you put down Apple for not putting OSX on the iPad. By NOT having a full OS on the iPad, Apple is guaranteeing that: Every app will work as intended, there will be NO VIRUSES, there will be NO ROUGE apps that steal personal information, etc. I am a technical guy that started on a Timex Sinclair back in the day, and man, I welcome the iPhone OS. Times have changed.

To people who doubt what the iPad can do:

Look at the how much better the iPad apps look compared to their iPhone counterparts. The Address Book, email, and Calader are all AMAZING looking on the iPad. iWork looks AMAZING on the iPad. Give the App developers some time, and I think they are going to go crazy on the iPad! Look for MUCH better games and things like Quicken, Photo Editors, CAD programs, Databases etc... Don't underestimate what the bigger screen real estate is going to allow.

Also, Apple said they are charging $30 for the full iWork Suite. ($10 per App) This tells me that the trend of the Apps being very inexpensive will continue for iPad specific apps.

Most of the people I talk to are VERY interested in the iPad. Even people who could care less about computers (My Parents) have expressed an interest in getting one...

Really... An Instant-ON tablet, 10 hours of use, beautiful multi-touch screen, built in iPod, ability to watch HD quality movies and TV, ability to download HD quality movies and TV from ANYWHERE, abiltiy to play fun games, ability to surf the web (even without Flash), ability to do work processing, speadsheets, etc, Acess to 1000's (150,000) apps, No worries about viruses, no worries about configuration issues... And on, and on...

I would say that this is what many people want!

I know I do...

When I need the full functionality of OSX or Windows 7, I will get out my MacBook Pro...

But for the other 90% of the time, the iPad will fit my needs quite nicely.

:)

Those who complain about the iPad really need to take a step back and realize that the world doesn't spin around them and their needs.

Freud called it "Egocentrism". These individuals have an oral fixation and there isn't much you can do about it. In other words it's verbal diarrhea. Most people actually do think the world revolves around them, and guess what? There's absolutely nothing you can do about it. It's the same people you meet in a restaurant who spend $10 on dinner and expect a 5 diamond service.

The iPad will sell millions because it fits the needs of quite a few individuals including me. Some can't get past that.

Umm... Sure the Courier video was awesome... BUT THERE IS NO DEVICE ANNOUNCED THAT SUPPORTS THAT!!!! It is just a mock-up of... Something.

It took Microsoft 3 years to come up with something that can compete with the iPhone... What makes you think they will be able to release something like the Courier?

May I suggest in that case you place an emergency order for a sense of humour?

Or perhaps fill in a requisition form for a ladder to help you down from that high horse.

Because at the moment - it looks like "buying company" is the only way you will find someone to talk to who won't start reaching for the ignore button.

No offence like. :)

Maybe some people want to buy the iPad, some a few of the characteristics don't match their needs. Behind some of the rants there is simply constructive criticism, not egocentrism.

Intense dissatisfaction with the present is what drives us forward. If we were all satisfied with the current state of affairs, nothing would improve.

To take a page out of your own book, this kind of forum attracts people who have a vested interest in having Apple put out cutting edge products that are a generation ahead of the competition.

These same people pay premium prices for Apple products and expect excellence. Something that Apple has not been able to deliver consistently recently.

Apple's hero, Jobs, is world's poster-child for egocentrism (he's the only egocentric according to him) - so what exactly were you expecting?

Correct.

Unfortunately, these people are living in a dreamworld where the laws of physics and economics of consumer electronics manufacturing have been suspended.

Apple designs, markets and sells devices that are focused to appeal to a large portion of the market. They don't really care what any given forum commenter wants. It's all about the *mass* market.

If they tried to appeal to everyone's desires at the price points everyone wanted, they would have been out of business a long time ago.

Luckily (I'm an AAPL stockholder), they do not address these maniacs.

The saddest thing is that these tech forum comments show a depleted inventory of common sense and logic. These are people who will be constantly disappointed with the world around them throughout their entire lives, because reality doesn't match up 100% with their dreamworld.
