The Real reason why HP purchased Palm USA

HP purchased Palm USA for one reason that being the patents Palm holds. For this reason I am surprised Apple didn't make this move. Many of the patents Palm holds could be used to sue Apple over the functionality of the iPhone, Ipod Touch, and the iPad.

Aw, come on. You know you it's silly. You just can't bring yourself to admit it. But that's ok. It will be our secret.

If it's a Windows machine he'd never admit a fault of it. If the flashlight was on a Mac he'd talk crap about it. Don't know why he's on this forum, there's nothing talked about here that fancies him, he trolls this forum everyday. Check all of his posts.

HP makes some truly mediocre stuff (like my 6-month-old (I think) employer-supplied EliteBook that died today), but it's nice to see them cutting the umbilical cord to Microsoft. Hopefully they won't try to pull a Palm of old and supply devices for both WebOS and Windows Phone 7.

the Elitebooks are damn fine machines. I've just ordered one of the 15 inch models - fully speced up with Intel Core i7, 4Gigs RAM, dedicated Nvidia Quadro 1Gig, WWAN, USB3.0, etc. This machine will beat any of the current MBPs.

I have an EliteBook (see above). The thing isn't even in the same galaxy as the MacBook Pro in build quality, design or user enjoyment (but lots and lots of lights!). Oh, and as you can see above, it died today.

I think it's a great idea... HP is the expert at this type of thing....

HP Quality Computers (Vectra) - RIP 1998
HP Quality Printers (Laserjet\Deskjet) - RIP 2002
HP Quality Mobile Device (iPaq) - RIP 2004
HP Quality Customer Service (outsources to India) - RIP 2006
HP Quality Mobile Phone (Palm) - RIP 2011

See, nobody is better at killing and burying a quality than HP, so it's a match made in heaven :)

Doesn't it also have a ridiculously cheesy pop-out flashlight above the screen? A very flimsy ridiculously cheesy pop-out flashlight? A hilariously ill-conceived pop-out flashlight? The kind that broke off within a couple of months of my friends buying one? That kind of flashlight?

Mine does. My "keyboard flashlight" hasn't broken yet (because I never use the silly thing) but the entire laptop died on me today. :(

Mine also looks like the one in the photos, complete with the "Tokyo at night" indicator lighting system. SWEET!

That is hilarious. Pics please. Does it run off software?

It is hilarious. And sad. Software? LOL! You push it with your finger and pops out. With a cheap, plasticky click noise. Truly pitiful.

Meh, web os is ok, but limited in the fact that it is made using web based languages, therefor being quicker on the live apps, but being slower on the function apps. meh

So, we find out who the poor unfortunate bastards are to get stepped on by Apple AFTER Palm. Congrats, HP, you just wasted a ******** of money. :p

In fact it might be a very good trade-off: flashlight (which I never use) vs the chicklet keyboard which is very uncomfortable for typing (especially for those who touch-type - and I am not one of those).

I know a lot of touch typers (Myself included) that prefer the chicklet keyboard. It takes less effort to push down on the key. Though I highly prefer the scissor key mechanism that the Logitech DiNOVO keyboard uses.
Perhaps you did not understand me. I think it would be impossible (or too expensive) to make backlit keys on a regular keyboard which I greatly prefer to a chicklet one.

Logitech and Creative disagree. Its just that back-lit is seen as a premium feature and thus companies charge more. LEDs are dirt cheap, and ones powerful enough cost something like 3c each.

Plus patent licensing fees.

From my experience, the palm pre is a very speedy phone in all ways.

I tested it in the RPI wind tunnel against an iPhone, and the iPhone was much more aerodynamic, so it flies faster.

Of course it died. It could not bear how much you hated it. And yes, Elitebook is not in the same galaxy as MBP. It's a very high performance and very reliable machine. The LEDs are very useful too. I know Steve Jobs would go blind but I am not him so I do not care. And in case you did not know, those lights are touch sensitive too so you can easily turn on/off WiFi or the speaker, or change speaker volume etc.

Theres a function key for that, if you actually owned a Mac. Plus any F keys that aren't programmed for a function I can easily turn it into a function.

There are function keys for that on every laptop (not just Mac) including this EliteBook but they do not show you the status of the feature. EliteBook touch LEDs do.

Of course. Why wouldn't it be? There are several such patents, each covering different variations.

etc.

How about just an LED set directly in the key and connected using the cloth wire they use for speakers!

No As in, on the Mac. the Functions keys can be programmed to ANYTHING. I can set F2 to shut down the friggin computer, or launch a set of Applications (I personally have to, to launch the Apps I use for WebDesign and another to launch XCode and Instruments). I think a lot of people would want that functionality than some dinky LED lights where the functionality is served just as well by the icon in the top of the screen.

Steve Ballmer bragged about HP's slate computer etc, now it will be funny if HP put WebOS into their future slate computers .. and more popular than full win 7 OS.

Did anyone actually see this coming?

Yes, a friend that I work with won the "Who's buy Palm" office pool. I had Nokia. Another has HTC while one had Apple. The guy that chose HP is taking us out to lunch tomorrow!

I would not be surprised that the mad dash, last minute train wreck of the HP Tablet computer contributed to this.

It will be entertaining to watch the Dells and HPs and HTCs and Motorolas of the world bloody themselves silly in the pocketable "PC race to the bottom" with a bewildering array of hardware running an incoherent array of OSes. Who will build the "Droid Incredible 2 Super Platinum Edition" running "Android Blur Sense Touch Wiz?" Why, it could be anyone! Awesome!

The interesting part of this new battle is Microsoft's irrelevance ("Psst, HTC, wanna buy some patents? You still think we're cool, right?")
