So HP is following in IBM's footsteps, but HP does not have a bunch of enterprise software products that they sell last I checked

When was this ? Because off the top of my head, here is a list of HP Enterprise software :

HP-UX
HP Virtual Server Environment
HP Data Protector
HP MetroCluster Service Guard
HP OpenView suite
HP Service Manager
HP OpenVMS

I'm just scratching the surface here... Maybe I should log on to my HP service account to list more...

You know what's really sad. Its the people that work at HP, who stuck by them when Palm was sold and now they're kicked to the curb
I don't know if they really stuck with HP despite other options or it just was too difficult to find another job during this semi recessionary times.

There is no third place in this fierce market, bye WebOS. Android is likely to stay around, let's see how long Winblows 7 mobile lasts.

Its hard to imagine MS dropping Windows phone 7. It looks like both their main OS as well as the phone OS is merging into one around the Windows 8 timeframe, although that is a bit murky.

HP is profitable , IBM is profitable, MS is profitable. These companies are not going anywhere, they just change. Commodity hardware businesses are hard to run without giant factories that house your workers and feed them in cafeterias (ahem...Foxcon)

If i was an HP Shareholder ( i likely am through mutual funds), i would be really questioning the boards skills about now. All this money spent on a short lived venture, could have been better spent on whatever software business they want now.

HP makes a $$$ on services and a ton of $$$ selling ink. The latter is no longer a growing market but its still a huge business with big margins.

it is very sad for touch pad owners. The real is news is the hardware off load HP is trying to pull an IBM and go all service and enterprise. To do this they killed webos and hardware and went out and bought autonomy. I have friends that work for autonomy i fear for them cause hp snacked on Palm for just 9 months before it decided that bone was not fun any more and moved on like a lumbering beast. It killed the gazelle of palm now it is going after the zebra in autonomy. It seems like they are dead set on IP purchases even if it comes with a side of employees and business

not just the short lived venture but now they are going to dump what 11 billion into autonomy to buy those guys out. They were and are very profitable unlike palm was when they were bought out. I know for a fact they were still eating other small companies autonomy was. I do not understand that shot gun marriage

yes, no more pc's

contrary to what Jobs keeps saying about 'Post-PC era'

We live in a PC world, and its reach is only increasing.

When I mean PC i mean personal computer, or personal computing device.

Sorry but every smartphone out there is a PC.

On the plus side, Tech News Today reports that Josh Topolsky from This Is My Next has information that HP will likely explore licensing WebOS. Hear that Android OEM partners pissed about Motogoog? You have a decent escape exit now.

Not likely to go far. After the ups and down the WebOS brand may be so damaged that it is effectively dead and the only revenue extraction will be selling patents to Google.

It is obvious that not many people were ready to embrace WebOS even when it was picked up by the number PC manufacturer in the world. Now that even HP has knifed it and killed their own WebOS devices after a short run, do you really think many people will touch another go at WebOS if someone resurrects it yet again.

HP leadership is looking rudderless and blowing in the wind after this overall debacle.

Remember this is HP that was going for "Better than number one" in tablets.

Either way, HP is going to do something about their PCs. It's already confirmed that HP is going to shut down their webOS and TouchPad operations after VERY POOR SALES.

As well, its going to do what Motorola did, split its current services into two. PC and webOS. webOS apparently is going to be either licensed for other companies to use (Samsung should and could -

i'm ****in shocked!

I saw (like many others on this site) great potenial in webOS and the fact it was bought by a huge computer company.

What is the reason for this decision? I thought they had a massive market share in terms of PC's? or where they selling at a loss?

Also what type of software do they currently make? I just find it completely bizarre they just give up and didn't try to innovate, change strategy and approach and try to turn it around.

I especially feel sorry for the HP touch pad owners, infact i find it completely ***** disgusting from HP, they should give the early adopters a refund for waisting people's time and money.

Do that software sell a lot? enough to completely shut down the computer and hardware division?

The reason? Have you not seen the news coming out today and the past week?

Then this: Should Samsung Buy webOS To Protect Itself From Apple? It Might Make Sense. Here’s Why [Opinion]

Now this: HP Q3 Conference Call: TouchPad Is “Not Gaining Traction” [Duh!]

So does Samsung buy Web OS from HP to gain independence from Goolge/Motorola?

Why would they do that?Samsung, htc etc all have a good partnership with google and will most likely get better with quicker updates via ice-cream sandwich ( pretty sure quicker updates is one of the features of iceream sandwich). Samsung would never walk away from google now, unless google dramatically change there strategy (which won't happen).

I agree that the poor start to WebOS by Palm did not help, but I was hoping being rebranded under HP could have removed some of the tarnish. However, if Google keeps playing hardball with the OEMs, eventually they are going to revolt.

Don't look now, but it appears bad news for iPad competitors is spreading.

Best Buy gives Galaxy Tab 10.1 free with TVs, hints trouble

This is the tablet Apple is trying to squash from being sold in Europe? Yeesh! Doesn't look like they have much to fear if the injunction(s) is/are ultimately overturned.

Remember this is HP that was going for "Better than number one" in tablets.

Indeed. How about this somewhat related gem from the past:

You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.

Double

webOS has a complete lack of developer support. Otherwise it is one of the most aesthetically pleasing mobile OS's out there. Had Palm initially released the first Pre on Verizon first I guarantee you the mobile landscape would be much different now. Crazy to think of the alternate realities that could have been.

That's just tablet sales, no?

they sell a huge amount of hardware and computers don't they? or at least last time i checked.

On the plus side, Tech News Today reports that Josh Topolsky from This Is My Next has information that HP will likely explore licensing WebOS. Hear that Android OEM partners pissed about Motogoog? You have a decent escape exit now.

The issue there is that no developer worth their salt is willing to stick by HP at this point. They see the writing on the wall, and they're moving on. It doesn't matter if they license it, they'll be even less apps that day then today.

Yeah, but then what about Bada?

However, it still seems like splitting up the services is what is best for HP. We never said the would stop making PCs, but rather transferring the service to another that could do something with the PCs (like IBM to Lenovo).

i wouldn't be too sure about that.

walled gardens poppin up everywhere now.

Nokia + Microsoft

Motorola + Google

HP + any takers (WebOS will be licensed out to 3rd parties)

Apple (just Apple!)

Samsung + BadaOS (their native OS. Samsung is worried though. They need to make/acquire their own competent OS)

HTC + who? (right now they are doing both WP7/Android)

LG + who? (if i were them i'd be worried, same with Samsung)

Walled Gardens growing everywhere!

They are only saying this to sound as if though they have a plan and heading into the future to make up for their poor sales in all aspects. Their mobile, tablets and PC's are getting torn up by Apple taking a big bite into everyone else cake.

+1. It's a freaking war of services partnering together. IT's going to be a big war zone out there from this point on....
