I don't know what reason's Apple had for taking out the Floppy drive, but that doesn't make sense. They took out the floppy drive out I think in 1998. What benefits did that bring? Was is slowing down the computer? Why would any other company want to take out the floppy drive, much less be afraid to do so?

I would understand if perhaps on a laptop to save space, but most computers were desktop. It's like taking out the DVD/Blu ray drives out of regular desktop computers and staying with the space where the drive would have been. If that space would have been empty when I got my 1st computer it would have been a waste.

Your argument doesn't make sense. You ask for a reason why Apple took out the floppy - (ie if it wasn't done for a specific reason, such as to add a new feature it was a bad move)

They didn't include it because it's didn't add any value to the Mac, it cost more money to put one in, and if they had, it would have hindered the development of better technological alternatives.

I mean, you could say the same thing now, 12 years later. Why not have all computers still ship with a floppy drive, I mean, theres tons of room in towers to include one. Heck, why not include a 3 1/2 = floppy drive and a 5 1/2 " one, tons of room both.

In the end, it didn't effect the success of the iMac, and it made for a more streamlined and simple to use computer. The slot loading cd drive was centred for aesthetic feel in the middle of the all-in-one design. No need for another ugly drive to be located somewhere else.

So.... what exactly was Flash used for in Yahoo! Webmail ? What is that ? Nothing ? Why are all the comments about Flash then ?

People spout buzzwords like HTML5 without even understanding what it is they are commenting on.

what else does it do? I'm serious.

I have click to flash installed and in the last 2 years or so I don't remember that I activated flash for anything else but videos. Maybe there was a form that can easily be done without flash.

But I do not remember a single site that did something with flash that was useful and couldn't be done with HTML.

Try browsing car manufacturer sites. Here is one example - an interactive BMW site.

Hi. How can I access yahoo HTML5 for iPad from my macbook to play around a little bit?

In Safari's advanced preferences pane, check the "show develop menu..." box. Then from the develop menu (between bookmarks and window), choose "Mobile Safari 3.2 - iPad" as your user agent.

i have a cheapo lenovo with a core i5 i just got from work and flash 10.1 works just as well. no crashes, hardly any CPU usage, no stress on the battery

even iTunes works fast on it

this whole Flash issue is just an OS X thing. i was going to buy a Mac for myself but the Flash and games sucking on it is making me think twice

Do you mostly use Windows?

I liked having both OSX and Windows, but I mostly use Windows, and since a computer is something that I use in my daily life, I had to get a regular laptop simply to cut down on stress. Little things add up and contribute to stress. For example, my macbook only had one mouse button, and I know newer macs have 2 now. But it only had one mouse button, and the Alt and CTRL keys are only on the left. I know it doesn't sound like much, but since those are 2 buttons that are used a lot on Windows, not having access to them with my right hand eventually builds up to a stressful annoyance.

But the worst part was the driver support. I had a 2007 Mac with Tiger. In order for me to get the latest drivers for Windows 7 I would have to buy Leopard, rather than simply going to Apple.com. I refused to upgrade just for that, since I'm not used to being forced to buy something just to get the latest drivers. I was able to find drivers for my blue tooth device, but my keyboard would constantly disconnect every minute. It was such a mess, and no drivers at all for the webcam, trackpad, the regular macbook keyboard.

So if you're mostly used to Windows then I would stick to that, if not get the Mac.

that's exactly my point. those sites can easily be done without flash and they would look much better. Car manufacturers sites are essentially just ads. Same is true for some other manufacturers sites.

Really short of video and maybe some artists sites there is no use for Flash aside of ads. That is the reason why Steve Jobs can be so stubborn about destroying Flash. If Flash was really necessary he could never afford to be so aggressive.

They'd be much blander. We could also remove things like images from the web. They are big wasteful files. Text is just fine.

Uh... Games ? HTML5 Canvas just isn't there yet.

Obviously Flash is not necessary but is this a valid reason not to have it? Is iPad necessary?

The only problem I have with HTML5 replacing Flash is that at least I can use plug-ins like Flashblock to avoid annoying animated ads right now. If they're re-coded into HTML5, will it still be possible to avoid them?

No one is doing more to accelerate HTML5 development than Apple is by closing the door on Flash.

If only Google would get on board...

Uh ? Google was first onboard to push HTML5 with Youtube. Apple is actually late in the HTML5 game.

It will be. Flash wasn't there in the begining either.

Unfortunately for HTML5 and Canvas, this will depend on yet another standard : Scalable Vector Graphics. SVG support, even though the standard is now close to 10 years old is sorely lacking in browsers (read, Internet Explorer). If Microsoft had supported SVG upon its initial release in 2001, Flash might never have taken off like it did.

Sure, your plug-in will simply not display the canvas tag instead of not displaying the embed tag.

Google ("Free and open!") pushing Flash (er...proprietary) as a selling point for Android devices in their battle against Apple and the iPhone doesn't do the HTML5 effort any favors.

I was trying to write a response to you, but then I figured that if you couldn’t understand the discussion that I was having with whoever I originally responded to, (I don’t normally check screen names, so it could have been you) then there’s really no way that I would be able to make sense of it for you.

Go go HTML5!

Just a continuation of the most obvious trend in the IT world nowadays...HTML5 all the way to the top - 1 year is more than enough to bury that CPU hog deep in the ground.

So where are the pundits that have always proclaimed Flash as a perennial technology? Such people should go and lick the boots of Adobe's CEO before Apple decides to buy that crappy company with some cheap change it has in the bank...

ADOBE IS DEAD. AND SO IS FLASH.
