Huawei could become the best-selling smartphone OEM in the world... surpassing Apple and Samsung.

But they will be doing it by selling smartphones with an average selling price of ~$250

If you're gonna try to outsell the iPhone... at least do it with a similarly priced product. Have some pride!

We know over a billion cheap Android smartphones get sold every year. So Huawei's goal isn't really special if you think about it.

I don't see the vast majority of Americans who can't even pronounce Huawei purchasing this over the many other more recognizable options.

I'm pretty sure some guy in Western Europe said the same thing a couple years ago.

Huawei now tops 20% market share in several European countries like Spain, Italy, Holland, and the home of Nokia - Finland.

Doesn't mean much to outsell the iPhone. Apple knows where it's market segment is and slowly grows it.

Wanna outsell the iPhone? Provide a budget phone to developing countries. Will instantly outsell iPhone.

Wanna outsell the iPhone in the higher phone bracket? Good luck.

Since when does Apple care about significant market share? They're content with 90% of the global PROFIT share.
They aren't content with 90% of the global PROFIT share, which is why we often see articles about apple looking to penetrate the China, India, etc. markets.

So is AT&T hoping to repeat history here? They gambled in the iPhone when most wouldn't and it worked out well for them. I don't foresee that happening again with any phone.
The real question is, is how much AT&T are going to be paid to flog this phone. They won't be doing it out of the goodness of their heart but to make money. To do that they need margin and lots of it. Either a payment or a huge discount would be needed to carry it.
One Phone Network Company store I pass from time to time only displays Samsung devices or really old apple phones. Today they were 'offering' an iPhone 5S on an 18 Month Contract for £15/month. Really? a 5s? Pleeze.
The do carry iPhone 7s but only on their website or by order in the shop.
To me that shows how much profit they are making on Samsung devices OR how much they are being paid to basically hide other devices. Even on their website a Galaxy A is the same monthly price as an iPhone 7.

If the 'subsidies' are big enough then it might not be long before both Apple and Samsung are pushed into the background at AT&T.
No evidence but it all sounds a bit fishy

Bad news for Samsung... This might make a small dent in iPhone sales, but I don't think it's going to be precipitous...

Huawei make the hardware, well at least the upgrade to the Masts 3G>4G for EE 4G cells (EE largest mobile network in UK).

I have a Huawei 4G wifi router as I cant get landline broadband where I live.

So I rely on Huawei for internet access 100%

Huawei have the knowledge of the workings of the mobile network and infrastructure so I'd say they're well placed to challenge Apple & Samsung in smartphone sales.

Unfortunately, some Americans think if they haven't heard of the brand or can't personally pronounce it, the brand doesn't exist in the world.

This is a very short sighted comment.

If you do not view any new entrant into the market as a threat...you are already done.

Look at Microsoft and Blackberry.

Also, there is a reason why Apple is going a huge push in China right now...

But Huawei isn't a new entrant in the market.

Worldwide... Apple has already been competing with Huawei as well as the other 100 smartphone OEMs. Apple is well aware of Huawei.

In the US though... I really doubt Huawei will gain a lot of traction. Huawei will be yet another Android handset maker. As if there aren't enough of those already. :p

Apple and Samsung do well in the US... but other OEMs like Motorola, HTC, LG and ZTE... do not.

What special sauce will Huawei bring to the table in the US?

Huawei is big in China guys and they could make a push in the US market. One problem is price. If they're going to be the same price as the iPhone, Galaxy Line, LG then it's going to be a tough nut to crack here in the US I think even if priced cheaper it's still going to be tough unless they sell them for $200-250.

The one thing that sets the iPhone apart is the OS. Not saying one OS is better than the other but the iPhone is the only phone that runs the OS. There are plenty of flagship phones that run Android. OnePlus was supposed to be a flagship killer but it hasn't. There are too many options when it comes to an Android phone, only one with iOS.

I think that's one reason Samsung wants to try and get Tizen popular and only run on Samsung devices but they would need developers to write apps for it.

Huawei is no more competition for the iPhone than Samsung or LG... it's just another Android phone manufacturer.

It IS competition for other Android manufacturers. In the US at least, most of the dust has settled and you're either in the iPhone camp or the Android camp. iPhone users aren't going to switch to Huawei phones any more than they are to Samsung phones. They might, however, switch to Huawei from Samsung.

Not really. Besides the fact that people switch back and forth all the time Huawei is the closest iOS experience on Android you will ever get. It behaves like iOS by stacking apps on homescreen, it even has rubber band effect.

Years ago all the Dongles (find that word difficult to say!) were Huawei possibly branded name in the USA.
According to customer sevices EE Newcastle UK the way to pronounce it is 'Hawaii', so there is a connection!

Huawei's flagship phones (P10 and Mate 9) are at the same price level as iPhone and Samsung's flagship models.

Genuine question - what's stopping you from buying the Mate 9 on amazon or something and simply using it on Tmobile?

Easy return.

No doubt... but the bulk of Huawei's sales come from their 32 other models... which have a MUCH lower price.

Think about it... how does Huawei have $700 phones... but their overall average selling price is around $250 ?

Answer... they sell A LOT of $100-$200 phones. Or maybe cheaper.
