So, do Americans like you really think that Chinese government wants to spy on you? That would be really funny if it was not sad.

Don't be silly Falainber...we all know China only spies on on themselves.

Oh...If you don't know whether to laugh or cry it's probably because you're confused as to which emotion your overlord expects you to display on the subject. Don't worry, be happy!

Could happen if Apple decides to dual source their modems again.

Huawei 5G modems for rest of world. Intel 4G LTE for U.S.

Intel won't have their act together until late 2020. And that's a first gen 5G chip.

Right now, Qualcomm and Huawei control 5G and Apple isn't on good terms with one of them.

How about Huawei 5G Modem for China, Intel 5G for rest of the world, or Samsung or Qualcomm.

"We have to conquer our own country and purify it of all infidels. Then, we should conquer the infidels' countries and spread Islam. The infidels who are usurping our countries have announced war against Islam and Muslims, forcing Muslims to abandon Islam and change their beliefs."Abdullah Mansour, current leader of the Uyghur separatist movement Turkistan Islamic Party (East Turkestan Islamic Movement), from "The Duty of Faith and Support," Voice of Islam/al-Fajr Media Center, August 26, 2009.

Yeah most likely Uyghur separatist movement doesn't exist anymore. The Chinese are not stupid.

Yup the government going to allow someone else to spy on us......

"Spying" is just another political bullSh!t excuse. If any company holds a large amount of data or information is consider spying, than every large corporation is a spy.

I would much rather Apple goes with Samsung Modem. For all sort of Strategic reason.

1. Samsung gets to test the modem tech on their own Smartphones, It is a lot less work compare to Apple doing much of the testing for Intel.

2. Samsung is also in the telecom infrastructure business, and also one of the biggest Patents holder in 5G, they have expertise both in 5G and 4G, as compared to Intel.

3. Samsung needs to fill their Foundry, and so far it hasn't been working out for them. A Foundry selling a lower profits per unit in Modem is better than have empty Fabs. Not saying that is currently the case. But Samsung do like to expand on their Foundry business.

4. It also allow diversification from TSMC. Apple will simply have 200M Modem Fabbed elsewhere instead of Mediatek / Qualcomm / Huawei doing it on TSMC.

5. Samsung could also tied the some NAND and Memory unit to give a better deal in total.

This should give Apple 2 - 3 years of time / 2023 to figure out 5G Modem for themselves.

Or you know as a consumer I don't mind paying $30 - $40 more for Qualcomm in iPhone.

China, under Xi Jinping, has already amply demonstrated an unbelievably intense desire to not only surveil but also micromanage the activities of even its most humble citizens, including school children and sanitation workers. The former have tracking devices in their uniforms and the latter have to wear GPS linked bracelets.

This government on a national and local level has shown an unprecedented interest in what the most obscure, humble and innocuous of its citizens does and even thinks. Because hey, it's not enough that they control what you do and how you do it, they want to get inside your head, too, down to your core beliefs on your place in the universe.

It is not widely covered in mainstream media but is known via Muslim and Christian publications that Xi Jinping's administration is cracking down on all people of faith, whatever faith that may be, from the native Falun Gong traditions to imported Christianity. They want government to be the God of their citizens. This is the most Orwellian regime we've ever seen, because they are actually creating and implementing the technology that was only science fiction when George Orwell wrote 1984.

Read up on how Chinese have invested heavily in western culture, particularly western cinema over the last decade. They want a share in shaping our views since they can't just overtly surveil and dictate such things in our still free society.

So yeah, I do think the Chinese government wants to spy on me. Personally I think it's stupid that they want to micro manage their own people to the degree that they do. But there's no ordinary logic or reason in megalomaniacal regimes. Just limitless ambition and the ruthless efficiency in achieving their aims.

I don't think they're actually going to implement this via one component in an iPhone that's likely to be heavily scrutinized. But I do think an offer like this is one small step toward a larger endgame with us little people as the pawns.

You are just confirming my point. Governments (including US) do spy on their citizens. But spying on citizens of other states (unless those are politicians or represent some other value for intelligence services) is sort of useless. Why? To send you a targeted advertising (of Chinese goods) via Google?

I do expect this to happen, because it is part of a deal for more Apple profits in China.

So the question is this, "Is Apple willing to sell out the United States (allow China to eavesdrop on everything) for money?

5G is just hype, at least for me. Sure it may be even faster than my fiber-optic cable in my home but it will still be subject to disruptions in the air right? And I won't have unlimited data. I will still probably have 20GB of cellular data on my plan. Everything will be faster and that's nice but will it change my life in the near future? No I don't think so.

I've never made this threat before, but if Apple installs Huawei, I will stop buying Apple products.

AGREED! I have no issue saying this, I'm a huge Apple fanboy, but I too will not be buying an iPhone with Hauwei anything inside of it.

You would like to use our chip to transmit all I/O from the entire upper echelon of American society? Let me think... Sure!
Dude, get over yourself -- "the upper echelon of American society"?
Do you think for one moment that buying iPhone graduates you (and your progeny) to some crusty echelon?

Sorry, dude, but if you need a freaking, mass-produced communication device just to assert status amongst friends and coworkers, then you do have a problem with self.

Damn, I thought April Fools' was over?

All countries should just ban all the devices and services of this **** of a company. Hasn't African Union discovered that they were being hacked through Huawei devices? And secret backdoor in U.S. phones sending data back to China?

Rest assured. You will not know whether a Huawei device is in your latest iPhone or not.

Dear Apple,

I think I speak for every intelligent Apple user and insist you say NO!! To Huawei!
Giving China a free pipeline to data-mine our phones is NOT worth jumping on to a new network that is still YEARS away from functioning across the country!

nope, you don't speak for me. Take off the tin foil hat.

They need to just kiss and make up with Qualcomm. Problem solved.

Qualcomm is seriously double-dipping in the method they use to charge for use of the IP. And if they are found to be in violation of FRAND terms then Apple is so right to challenge their way of doing business.

How about Huawei 5G Modem for China, Intel 5G for rest of the world, or Samsung or Qualcomm.

Because Intel won't have a first gen 5G modem ready until late 2020. This means 2021 for Apple.

Samsung cannot legally sell a modem to anyone else due to their patent agreements with Qualcomm.

A lot of good reasoning. Unfortunately, Samsung is unable to sell modems to Apple.

Last year, South Korea's Fair Trade Commission indicated Samsung had an agreement to license Qualcomm patents, but the agreement did not allow Samsung to sell their chips to other parties. This is why you don't see Exynos anywhere outside a Samsung phone.
