And why do you think we'd be foolish enough to buy any Apple device with a Huawei chip in it?
We wouldn't.
Apple would be dead to me if they did this.

Apple would also gain plenty of new customers who want 5G.

5G for the rest of the world. 4G for U.S. customers.

From a global perspective, only American consumers are wearing the tin foil hats.

LOL at everyone railing against Huawei in the comments. You've all fallen for our government's misinformation campaign against them. Our allies are not so gullible, and have pushed back against our threats to cut off support and intelligence sharing if they buy from the company. Those allies asked a simple question: "Where's your proof?" They were met with crickets.

Alot of dodgy things going on with huawei

“The security in Huawei is like nothing else. It’s engineering like it’s back in the year 2000,” Dr Levy, technical director of GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre, said. “It’s very, very shoddy and leads to cybersecurity issues that we then have to manage long term. It’s just poor engineering.”

and the uk government want to use them to supply our 5g network. NO THANKS

More suspicious activity that people need to know about. Huawei removed wi-fi transmitting cards from a Pakistan-based surveillance system's CCTV cabinets they built after they were discovered by the project's staff

Also the head of a uk cyber security firm says if the chinese government can force any chinese company to do anything they want should we really let them run our entire 5g network.

I say NO

If Apple have to wait until 2021 to roll out their own 5G iPhones, so be it. 5G are starting to roll out this year but only in small limited areas. It may not be widespread next year anyway so what’s another year? Who knows what may happen between Apple and Intel or Qualcomm. Maybe Apple will have their own 5G modem ready in 2021?

The problem is 2021 is the realistic timeline for Intel's first gen 5G modem on 10nm. It's not just waiting until 2021 to resolve the problem. Apple is waiting until 2021 for a low quality modem.

Qualcomm and Huawei have already deployed their first gen chip this year on 10nm and 7nm, respectively.

Take a look at Shawn Zhang's twitter and work on from there: https://twitter.com/shawnwzhang

Hauwei is a company that has a deep strategic symbiosis with the communists. Dealing with Huawei is like dealing with IG Farben.

I live a few blocks from where Meng Wanzhou is currently holed up in her Vancouver mansion. She transited Vancouver knowing there was a possibility of arrest and in doing so endangered every Canadian who is currently in China without any due care. There is also some new talk that she allegedly misrepresented her taxes while she was a Canadian Permanent Resident a few years back. There's just no end to the scumbaggery with these guys, you can go on all day..

Help me understand...

how this would affect privacy...

in any greater capacity than it's already affected by the myriad Chinese vendors and contract manufacturers Apple already employs. I mean, I get the sentiment and on the surface it seems semi-logical. Realistically, Huawei is a known entity already under a ton of scrutiny. If a company was going to invade your privacy through Apple devices, chances are you've never heard of the company.
Apple wouldn't do it anyway. Privacy wouldn't be the hold up though, reputation would. Huawei's got a sketchy rep in the US. Apple wouldn't want to go anywhere near that.

@69Mustang , you broke the chain of the forums agreeing on something! That hasn't happened since the second member joined!

You're either propagandizing for the Chinese government or you're ignorant about both 5G and Huawei. I posted a set of links in the thread, for folks just like you, regarding Huawei's actual reputation in the computer community. It's terrible. You'll need a tin foil hat for your phone if it's stuffed with Huawei tech trash.

Look further up the comment thread. I posted a set of 5 links directly pointing out Huawei's reputation within the computer community. I'll post more upon request. The only crickets are the one's in your head thanks to your ignorance. Cure it.

Here's what 5GE really means, what phones you can expect to see it on and why you shouldn't get overly excited about it.

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/5ge-explained,news-29329.html

AT&T's "5GE" speed doesn't even qualify as REAL 4G speed. It's a marketing con-job, befitting our era of con-job government. Incredibly sad marketing-moron behavior on their part, destroying the trust of their customers.

Look at Huawei's growth in Europe - their shipments grew over 30% in 2018 at the expense of Apple and others.

Like I said, from a global perspective, only Americans are wearing the tin foil hats. If you step outside your bubble for a moment, you'll realize that most consumers outside the U.S. see any negative press against Huawei as predatory trade tactics by the current administration.

If I was Apple, I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss HW’s offer - even though it currently looks like an unlikely relationship. This gives Apple some leverage over QC to settle their differences. Let’s see who bends first.

And HW is just being business opportunistic given Apple’s qualms with QC. Nothing wrong from that aspect - minus potential spying). If I were Apple, I would use HW as a bake-off, sprinkle some security compensating controls, go through their processes/code, and make them a legitimate competitor to QC’s chips.

Business is business and that comes before all else. Apple is first and foremost NOT a security company. HW is the same. In the end EBITDA alway wins.

Someone already said it. It’s the government’s policies company’s can’t separate from. IMO, I think these companies could care less.

As a technical security professional that works for a company that’s had our IP stolen by HW, I despise what they do and will not support products with my wallet.

And all of your communications will be routed through a Chinese government server, which like the NSA, stores a copy of everything for 20 GigaYears.

I have a hunch that this will actually be a thing. You see this sounds like a joke right now, and it is obvious that Washington will never approve this, but by the time Apple release 5g, there will be a new government in Washington. There are only 2 big patent holders in 5g technology, one being Qualcomm the other being Huawei. Apple is having a dead enemy relationship with Qualcomm and a clean relationship with Huawei. Huawei like Apple, they borrow heavily from Apple's design ideas, they know that is shady, so if it comes to a time when they can pay back to Apple in a dignified fashion, they will, just like what they expressed in the article. Since the Huawei security stunt is more of a wave of propaganda by the 5g industry interest group than a real breach of trust, and Apple knows it. Apple will obviously have its mouth shut as of now, due to PR concerns, but when the time is right, they will likely include Huawei as a supplier. You'd never know. By having a relationship with Huawei, Apple can keep Huawei in check and also keep a platform for negotiating shared security and privacy standards. It's going to be a mutually beneficial relationship for both parties.

Apple should take more resource in Point to Point communication instead of 5G. The further would not rely on the infrastructure in the future.

I sure hope Apple won’t put a low quality modem otherwise there may be many who may wait longer to upgrade to 5G. I am sure many will be following closely with how the court case concludes between Apple and Qualcomm if Intel fails to come up with a quality modem by 2020.

This is a bit of a strange article; did anyone actually ask Apple if they were interested or did Huawei just throw this out there?

For a company as gung ho as Apple on security, I just can't see them buying tech from a company that is literally most famous for its poor security and abundant backdoors.

I've never made this threat before, but if Apple installs Huawei, I will stop buying Apple products.
I'm sure Apple will go bankrupt when you stop buying their products.

So now they want to sell stolen tech to Apple? I mean, it’s a smart business move but I don’t see it very likely. However, let’s see how desperate Apple gets.

I don’t think Apple needs to get too desperate since 5G won’t have the infrastructure until 2021 and probably not even early 2021.

How could it be "stolen tech" if most experts agree Huawei has a 1 year lead over Ericsson in 5G equipment? Who are they stealing it from, aliens?

Even back in 2015, Apple licensed nearly 800 patents from Huawei. This is not a new business relationship for Apple.
