iPad has become an expensive media consumption device even before the actual launch. Why couldn't iPad be based on real OS X...

Waiting for 2nd gen iPad

Vote with your wallets! That is the only way to get Apple to do the iPad the way we wanted it to be.

Flash coming to Blackberry as well!

Until day or two ago Apple wasn't alone but now they truly are...

Not only that Flash isn't going anywhere but Flash has never been stronger and more promising!

No way

They have all their shows and movies with commercials, that should be the pay part. I am not going to pay for a service that shows commercials and even if they remove them, I still would not pay since all these subscriptions add up to a lot of money. Still getting the iPAD just not the video services unless they are free.

Well, This is one more reason for all the haters to post SJ is the devil.

I don't personally care one way or the others... I don't use Hulu

That wouldn't do the devil justice and besides, Stevie is real.

SJ wants to control everything and he wants to get paid for everything, enough is never, ever enough. My opinion of course.

What does Hula even do, I take it that it's TV online? Currently for free? Does it just do rubbish american TV such as Fox news, or can I get things like BBC and ITV?
Its basically the equivalent of ITV except for US networks. All the major networks ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox have their shows on Hulu.

Honestly, every announcement I here makes the iPad less appealing to me. Seems like Apple has no leverage this time and everyone wants a piece of the pie.

What I'm gathering from many of these posts is that Apple should allow Flash on the iPad b/c then consumers could watch video on it for free, guaranteed.

Of course that makes zero sense logically because Apple doesn't control Hulu, etc. And its been well known that Murdock wants to put Hulu behind a pay wall going back to 2009, well before anyone knew what the iPad was.

And then there is this from the 9/15/09 MarketWatch:

"While Hulu sprang up in response to the phenomenal viewership statistics generated by YouTube -- often with clips of studio-produced content uploaded to the site by users -- it too has forced the industry to come to grips with perhaps a different threat.

There has been some concern that the free availability of TV shows online will make people less likely to subscribe to cable or satellite service, eroding a major revenue stream for the studios, networks and cable operators. This fear has inspired "TV Everywhere," the Time Warner Inc.-led /quotes/comstock/13*!twx/quotes/nls/twx (TWX 29.44, +0.36, +1.24%) initiative that seeks to make TV shows available over the Web only to those with some kind of video subscription.

Against this backdrop, Hulu is mulling its own paid model."
(Bold added for emphasis).

Bottomline: Flash or no Flash content owners want to charge you for video. Apple's decision to not include Flash is irrelevant in that regard.

(54 Positives; 376 Negatives)

Not too popular, eh Macrumors? I'm not surprised by this at all. iPad owners are going to be squeezed out of every cent. I fear OSX is in trouble.

1) iPad owners will only be "squeezed" for the amount they want to be squeezed. There is fundamentally zero difference between how the iPad functions and how the Touch/iPhone functions. Users buy the content they want, nothing more.

2) What does OS X have to do with this at all? It's like saying that Tomatoes are in trouble because Grapes are in season. Not to mention that you need a computer to sync and iPad; that the iPad is not a true computer; and that the iPad doesn't have enough functionality for most to use as a primary computer -- it's purely complimentary.

3) If sometime in the future Apple does develop a rich iPhone OS (probably called something else by then) that can handle all the OS X functions and then some, so what. Good riddance OS X just like we eventually said the same to OS 9. Technology moves forward.

It would be one thing for Hulu to charge for an app that would play it's content, but another for them to charge just iPad users for the content itself through a subscription model.

I'd consider paying for an app, if the price was right - but have no interest in yet another recurring subscription.

No way would I pay for HULU. Of course, I won't be purchasing an ipad the first year either. Just wait and see how it all plays out.

I like the sidelines!

What's telling in that video is how Adobe AIR is used to create content that can be distributed "on any screen, any device". If so, the iPad and the App Store become less compelling if you can get the same thing on an HP Slate, a JooJoo, or whatever else may be coming out.

This has no bearing on whether Hulu charges for their service, but does affect how exclusive content may be on the iPad. No wonder SJ is lobbying heavily against Flash.

Once again, expect Hulu to compete with iTunes:

They will continue to offer ad-supported, streaming video, but you will have an account and will purchase "season pass subscriptions" as you can in iTunes, but for half the cost.

A typical season pass in iTunes goes for $24.99-$54.99

The New Hulu will charge $12-$24 for a show's season, and you'll be able to stream those shows only, whenever you want from any device, ads-included.

Speculate all you want but mark my words. And no this will not be ipad only.

Simply amazing how many people get their panties in an uproar because Hulu wants to actually be paid for their efforts. Yeah...that makes a lot of sense to forgo buying an iPad simply because of that. Wait. I take that back. If you have a problem with HULU charging for their content on the iPad, *please* do not buy an iPad. Really. Please don't.

I am buying an iPad and I will probably fork over a fair amount of ducats for apps/content that I'm interested in *including* a paid subscription to HULU.

Don't twist things around, people are in an uproar because they don't have to pay for Hulu on regular computers. There wouldn't be this uproar if they also had to pay to watch Hulu videos on their regular computers.

It's supposed to be the ultimate internet experience, and if it had flash, then more than likely they would have been able to watch Hulu the way they do on their computers.

Read the article - Hulu is casting mobile viewing as a premium for-pay service. Even if iPad had Flash, Hulu would be charging to view on iPad.

I would love to see NetFlix bring an App to the iPad. I already pay for that subscription. I don't have a problem with subscriptions as long as I use it enough to warrant the pay.

Someone has to make money somewhere. If Hulu does charge I am sure the commercials will go away. Everyone is just spoiled by getting content for free.

Movies stream though I can see paying to watching. But TV Shows should be free to watch. It is something that airs on cable and you can get without paying by using an antenna at home on a TV.

In That Case I Will NEVER Subscribe To A Pay Hulu Service

Only way to defeat such a planned discrimination against the iPad is to never subscribe to it. If enough people boycott that offering they will have to rethink it and use advertising like they do on broadcasts as the revenue source.

Or not. You are assuming advertising produces enough revenue to pay for the streaming servers, content licenses, etc. It doesn't appear to.
