I'm sorry I forgot you don't have Tabbed browsing on your computer? Or that while you are watching it streaming from your xbox, you can't mute it and open up any other of your media devices to do what every you'd like while the commercial passes.

Everything I'd like except continue watching you mean.

Hulu has more commercials because they are competing with zero commercial content viewed by me on cable/FIOS in the last several years since they invented skip ahead

haha that's funny, but I think he just meant that recently Netflix agreed to delay DVD releases of new movie titles so they could have access to more streaming titles, and they have also agreed to not have the ability to stream many TV show's days after airing, and must wait until that season has been released on DVD before they can have the option to stream.

Exactly. It is clear that Netflix is looking towards a discless future via streaming/download/... in the way they keep pushing the free(*) streaming and are perfectly happy to have the USPS stop Saturday delivery.

The regular TV season is done, so the point is somewhat moot now, but say I missed the latest episode of LOST and want to catch up. I can currently stream it from Hulu or ABC.COM on my computer or buy it from iTunes/Amazon (often the day after it first aired) and watch it other devices, but I won't be able to get it from Netflix until the content is made available to them which could usually be when the episode is released on disc or currently up to 28 days after that. (We'll see when LOST Season 6 becomes available at NetFlix for delivery/streaming when the DVD is released in August).

Hulu plus has a huge advantage in that they ARE the content providers and can do whatever they want including withholding the content from other providers until they've made their desired direct profit.

(*) They may decide to throttle/limit/charge for this part of the service at some later date so I certainly don't expect unlimited streaming forever.

I agree, it looks pretty poor sitting next to Netflix. However, Netflix doesn't have a lot of recent 'A' list content available to watch instantly, and most of their content is not in HD. They have generally older movies and 'B' movies, and limited television series. I still far prefer Netflix for the reasons you listed, but Hulu does offer some things Netflix does not (ie. recent 'A' list television content, in HD). Not having CBS involved really hurts them too.

Isnt CBS on tv.com?

You may not want it on your phone, but it would be nice on the computer and TV. From what I understand, free hulu wont offer as much HD content as Hulu Plus.

You quoted me but still missed my point. Hulu Plus is a premium service, and the iPhone/iPad Apps are just one of the features included. You even missed my statement that I'm in Canada, so I can't enjoy Hulu on my phone, HD or otherwise.

Fracken CRTC and Gobal TV and CTV, etc are delaying deployment of a decent online service in CANADA, including a decent subscription service online. Just check out Global TV, its ad based service is LOW quality crap that you you have to queue 12 part one after each AD, and even Rogers On Demand Online service is forced to goto GLOBAL TV's website for shows they have rights too. CTV does the get up off the couch and go and click each part of 7 to 12 parts after each AD as well. I just want to queue a couple shows, and sit back and watch just like a TV with the ability to pause on the fly....

I remember reading about it and being excited, up until the point where it said that you will still have to watch ads. I think I'll stick with Netflix.

$120/year PLUS ads, for the same content I now watch with ads alone. I’m glad they’ve moved beyond Flash, but this is one experiment I’ll be passing on. (I don’t need the whole past seasons of current shows—that’s nice, but I’d use it so rarely it’s worth little to me. I keep up-to-date within the last 5 just fine.)

Drop the price or lose the ads, and we may have a deal :) Even with the exact same existing content, I’d still buy in.

But it’s a step.

The only reason this is tempting is because Netflix is soooooooo slow in adding new episodes. Still not gonna pay 10 bucks for it though.

No video out from the iPad!

Even at $10 per month I was still somewhat interested in this UNTIL I actually tried the Hulu Plus iPad App and found out that they don't allow you to watch the video on the iPad's TV/VGA out (thus no output to your big-screen TV). Given that and the $10 fee and the commercials and I'd have to say that I'm no longer much interested in the service. I guess I'll stick with the free ABC App and Netflix (since the Netflix App at least allows me to output the video from my iPad to the TV).

If they offered some premium content like HBO programming I'd be more likely to pay. However, they are just regurgitating free over-the-air content. I'll just record my shows and watch them later on the TV.

If the networks created the content they do with just ad revenue, they too would go belly up in all likehood.

The networks have a major sourse of income that you failed to note. They have a share of the content they create, so when they go into reruns, DVD sales, direct video or movies, they get a cut of the share. Part of the production cost for shows today is covered by shows that have not been on the air for years.
Reruns are ad supported as well, DVD sales of TV shows is a relatively new revenue stream and PPV/VOD aren't really factors when it comes to TV shows. There is also merchandising but how lucrative that is varies greatly between shows (i.e. Star Trek has much more merchandising potential than Grey's Anatomy). Ad sales is the life blood of TV and has been since the days of Texico Star Theater.

The $20 billion vs $200 million comparison I made was based on ad sales only and I did it to help illustrate one of the biggest obstacles content creators (not just big studios but small players as well) face trying to move from 'old media' to 'new media.' As old media continues to lose ground to new media the cost of new media will inevitably have to go up, IMO, because it won't be able to be subsidized by old media anymore.

Until I can watch live NFL games through a service like that, I'm going to stick with cable.

A lot of those full season runs are available on Netflix anyway. I think they should've made it free by doubling or tripling the ads on the iPad or something. Or like 3 or 4 bucks a month. $10 is ridiculous. They don't have Colbert, The Daily Show, or Letterman anymore. I only use Hulu to watch movies if there are any good ones available, and to watch Modern Family, 30 Rock, The Office, and SNL every Tuesday.

I don't think it's really worth it.

$9.99 a month with ads? Does it have all the content from Hulu.com? Sounds like they are getting greedy. Give me ads or give me a fee...not both.

This is why I buy all my shows on iTunes, no ads. I'll be staying away from this. I've never been to Hulu yet so it's no big loss. With the iPhone 4, I can now load all my HD shows onto it so I am good.

Pricing aside, this is different from cable. For cable, you're paying the provider for access to the channels. The channels themselves then show the advertisements. With this HULU Plus, however, you're paying Hulu for access, and then have to watch their own commercials.

lol, $10 per month. Get real hulu.

It is sad to see all these mainstream content providers trying to cash in on this device. You want to charge me for an app? Fine. But take your monthly fees for content I can get free on a 'land based' web browser and shove them.

I'm not your cash cow just because I am mobile. I paid for my device and I've paid for my Internet access just like the land lovers.

Look, I want to ditch my cable provider as much as the next guy, but until you can watch LIVE sports in HD or in some other fashion, I'm stuck paying a monthly fee.

But, I'm NOT going to double-pay, AND watch ads. People keep saying we pay to watch ads already with cable, and when we buy magazines, or newspapers.

How's that model working out for traditional newspapers? They are folding left and right.

And vice-versa, what about 'news' websites that charge for content, AND have ads? Any left, and how many subscribers do they have?

The problem is, the OLD model doesn't work anymore. These old TV execs just can't seem to get it. What's wrong with the current Hulu setup? Just run and ad before the show and that's it.

The more people watch a show, the more ad revenue comes in, the higher the ratings, the more networks can charge for advertising on a particular show.

What's hard about that?

Full seasons, huge library of shows plus movies and people are flipping the heck out over $10? Are you kidding me? The Hulu ads are SECONDS long! Geez almighty chill out. I should unsub cable if I get Hulu plus along with Netflix!

It's not easy to start charging for something that you've been giving away for free, especially when it still includes the ads that were supposedly the reason it was free in the first place.

Good luck with that Hulu.
