People the reason cable has both is cause ads pay the makers of the show when the bill pays for the hardware and bring the shows to your tv. Hulu dosnt do that second thing. That's your Internet provider

+1

this is actually triple-billing, and i can't believe you guys are really thinking you would pay for this!

what kind of jobs do you people have that you can afford a 100-150 dollar a month phone bill, a 50-70 dollar a month internet bill, (which probably includes some form of TV that will carry most of what is on hulu), and then pay 10 bucks a month for hulu, and STILL have to watch ads?

I can barely use hulu at it's current resolution because i don't have 20 mb internet at home...are you guys going to upgrade your internet plans to support 720p streaming? or are you going to wait 5 minutes for hulu to buffer so you can get your premium hd video, and then wait while the absurdly loud commercials play?

I'll be surprised if they have even 20,000 paid subscribers by christmas.

How many customers do you think the cable and satellite companies have at $100 a month or more with far more ads than Hulu? Your theory is obviously flawed.

Correct. Hulu should be free if with ads.

Also, many of us now have caps on our internet so I am curious to see how many people will be reaching those caps.. Comcast (250GB cap) originally stated that the the typical person would never reach it but if you are streaming 720p all the time plus doing your usual internet browsing then I am sure more people are going to start to have issues with caps.

Let's simplify the math and say 1GB per hour of high quality streaming. Actually, we'll be very generous and say 2GB per hour. That's still 25 hrs per week of streaming video, and another 50GB of misc. internet usage. You think people will go over that? Again, that's being generous. More realistically it's closer to double that.

One other point about this "OMG Hulu wants to charge you $10/mo for TV with ADS?!?" Here's another interesting fact about Hulu's commercial breaks:

Lost Final Episode on Cable TV: 2 hours 30 minutes. (including ads)
Lost Final Episode on Hulu: 1 hour 45 minutes. (including ads)

Yes they show you ads. But the ad breaks are so much shorter.

Cool, so Hulu is charging $10 a month to provide shows WITH COMMERCIALS to people who with that same computer connection can download them for free WITHOUT COMMERCIALS. Sign me up, I'm stupid.

Just a note, I would consider paying Hulu $10 a month if there were no commercials.

Not everyone here pirates content Sonicwind.... not to mention the risk of downloading something malicious or of poor quality. 10 bucks a month is very reasonable... and how are you people so upset over like 2 minutes of commecial. Go take a piss or grab a mtn dew geez.

I swear some people really are IDIOTS. As someone already posted earlier (but it was largely ignorned, apparently) TV COMMERCIALS=REVENUE FOR COMPANIES THAT MAKE TV SHOWS (ABC, CBS, etc). SATELLITE or CABLE TV BILLS=REVENUE FOR SATELLITE/CABLE COMPANIES (COMCAST, DIRECTV, etc,). HULU ADS=REVENUE FOR COMPANIES THAT MAKE TV SHOWS, while HULU SUBSCRIPTION FEE=REVENUE FOR HULU (Revenue that has to be used for DIGITAL CONVERSION, STORAGE, SERVERS, TECHNICIANS, etc.) Not to mention the fact that HULU PLUS OFFERS MORE TV SHOWS THAN REGULAR HULU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean, damn, people act like just because its on the internet money isn't required to make it work, like people don't have to (and don't want to) get paid.

I agree with you.

Ad-supported + $9.99 a month = FAIL

Sorry Hulu, you can't have it both ways. Also, I stopped watching Hulu when Viacom started doing their own video streaming, and they actually do it better.

I don't agree. Or at least they may need to give choices like $49.95 with no ads, $29.95 with limited ads, etc..... $9.99 with ads and wider selection isn't FAIL for some.

What are you talking about?? Hulu on the computer HAS commercials. Unless you are talking about illegally downloading them WITHOUT commercials, or paying for them individually on iTunes WITHOUT commercials.

He means downloading them illegally. And when he says "Sign me up, I'm stupid." what he means is "Don't sign me up, I'm entitled to everything I want without having to pay anything for it."

I keep reading how people don't want to "pay for ads". I assume this means you currently do not pay for satellite or cable service which are plagued with ads.

In my case, that is correct. I pay for netflix (which is ad free), and if I am dying to watch something before it shows on netflix, i will use hulu or one of the other free (if not quite legal) ways of streaming tv shows that are out there. I will gladly watch ads if there is no cost to me; it's only fair that I pay for the content by watching the ad. That said, I don't think it is fair to charge me to watch ads.

No Flash and No Android.

Sounds great. Some people can probably cancel cable.

Believe it or not, in this area some nutty people pay > $200 a month just for fricken cable tv.

Just as soon as Apple stops selling/renting video content in the iTunes Store.

Apple sells media near break even, so Apple probably won't care. Studios do though.

How would you watch sports or live events?

That's an interesting question. I don't do either so I don't give it much thought. (Okay, Olympics and World cup would be two exceptions).

World Cup is available via live streaming. NBC blocked streaming of the Olympics, though.

We're probably all just screwed one way or another...

So you've never bought a magazine? A newspaper? A DVD?

I'm not saying you've gotta like it, but most things are "pay + ads." Is anyone surprised by one more?

Yeah. Considering on all those other formats you don't actually watch or consume the ads except by choice.

Not to mention the fact that some of us who DO pirate content (;) ) dont always want to go through the hassle of doing so just to watch TV shows that we have no desire to keep permanently. I've watched many shows and movies on Netflix on my iPad that I would have never watched any other place or any other way. I'm sure that there will be TV shows on Hulu that I feel the same way about. NOT to mention IT'S 10 BUCKS!!!! Smoke 1 & 1/2 less cigarettes a day, or a smaller coffee each morning, or WHATEVER and you'll have the cash to pay for it.

There are a lot of naysayers, but to me it depends upon the content. If -- and I say if because I do not know if it will be the case-- the content is such that I can drop my premium cable channels and still see everything I would normally watch, then I would come out way ahead. Who cares if I see some episodes a few days after they air?--I time-shift almost everything I watch anyway.

This sort of thing--TV shows available directly to the viewer from the television studio via the Internet--is going to hurt the cable providers (who package TV channels and charge ever more exorbitant fees) and may ultimately be good for consumers.

I have a DVR to record seasons that are currently on and Netflix to catch up on shows that aren't currently on. I'm still not sure why I would also need this service and am completely confused as to why it would cost $9.99/month. That's the same as my unlimited Netflix subscription that includes tv shows and movies.

This, too, presumes one pays for cable. I like it as a model INSTEAD of cable!

Just as soon as Apple stops selling/renting video content in the iTunes Store.

That is too bad. Hulu over Apple TV I would pay for with or without ads. They get content quicker and priced better if I just want to buy a few episodes. Dont think I have ever rented network TV on Apple TV but I did get a season of Mad Men once.

I'm not happy about this - as a NetFlix subscriber - this is just another way to skim money from us - If its ad supported I will not pay a thing!!!!

Put that in your cap and smoke it - Hulu.

Now with that said I do love the Free site Hulu.com and will continue to use it.

I didn't know Netflix as shows the next day after they broadcast.

I pay $30-something a month for internet, and I've streamed HD before just fine. I DON'T have cable or satellite (too expensive). I could get this Hulu premium service AND Netflix for the cost of cable.

It's not for everybody, but it's not an outrageous cost.

Hulu plus will have more content than hulu, plus HD content. You aren't paying for access on these devices, you are paying for a premium service that includes access on additional devices. If you think $9.99/month with ads is too expensive, I think you should look at your cable bill again.

I just wish things like this and Netflix were available in Canada.

Enjoy your HD content on your phone!
