Apple should not be allowed to make a car. Congress needs to stop this madness. It’s no different than ISPs owning a content company (looking at you AT&T and others). These massively large companies need to be broken up.
Soa car isn’t hardware?

Can't wait for the ads: "Apple Car. Engine sold separately ($99,999). Seats not included (pack of 4 for $19,999)."

I really can’t see an Apple car being successful, no different than the edition Apple Watch.
Of course you can’t see it being successful. You have no idea what it will look like, be priced at, who will manufacture it etc.

However, to compare it to the Edition Watch is silly. Also, Edition Watches are still around and are titanium now.

Almost every "car" company has tons of other operations. Honda makes key planes. Toyota makes helicopters. Hyundai makes grand pianos. GM has lots of financial services companies. Almost all of them own or have stakes in various parts, electronics, and technology companies. Tesla makes home/commercial solar panels and AI driving software.

I don't see why Apple should be forbidden from making a car. As a shareholder, I'm still not convinced it's a good idea, but I don't think they should be banned from trying. As technology converges with almost all other business it's only natural that technology companies would move into them, and vice-versa.

Toyota doesn’t “make helicopters,” and Apple doesn’t manufacture anything.

Good - that would been a horrible fit. Not sure what Apple was thinking on that one!

As they shouldn't be.... Do you really think high end Apple wants to associate with budget market vehicles such as Kia or Hyundai? yes I know the sonata is ranked fairly high in the sedan market but they are still budget vehicles.

They are budget vehicles that are often compared to rival's luxury sedans and SUVs that cost $10K-$30K more. I don't know any other brand that won as many the Motor Trend's Car of the Year, Car and Driver's 10Best, North America Car of the Year award, or Edmund's car of the year recently -- Kia's wildly popular Telluride for instance won them all while "budget" models Hyundai Veloster N and Elantra likewise are received well by the auto insiders.

Apple ruins the prices of any industry they enter as other companies realize how much greed they can get away with. Not interested in their take on cars

The Hyundai and Kia brands may be budget, but Hyundai’s manufacturing prowess is nothing to scoff at. You should look it up; it’s quite interesting

maybe so, but I thought Apple is all about premium.... hence the whole android vs iPhone debate

hyundai and kia don't stand out as premium to me but to each his own

It's not about greed, it's about making better products that people are willing to pay a premium for. You don't remember the dreck that was the phone industry. Heck, most computers today still suck: poor build quality, blah aesthetics. I mean, most stuff is basically crap until you get to a certain price point.

If you can't afford that price point, too bad. But don't call it greed.

Well, Apple could just buy out both Hyundai and Ford with about half the cash they have on hand.
They should have bought Tesla to be honest. Right now it would be very cost prohibitive, the same with other car makers. The bigger issues is time, if Apple wants to enter the market by X date, it needs to secure contracts now, or honestly 3 years ago. By the time an Apple car hits the market, the market will be over saturated with every car maker having an electric car. Maybe Apple makes it ”right” where everything clicks but I’m confused with the strategy they have at the moment. Also who would bare liability to a totally autonomous car, this is another administration, no more hands off I think.

Good call by Hyundai/Kia...you have to sell your soul to partner with Apple...Foxconn is a good example...
Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

omg.... you think Hyundai/KIA killed the talks because they don’t want to work with Apple- instead of how everyone is reporting it: that Apple killed the talks due to NDA breach?!

Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!

You got the jokes today, man!!!

My take:

Apple over-looked the Service Dept part of it, & used the fact that Hyundai & Kai couldn't keep their mouths shut, to back out !

NOT Rocket Science, it's crystal clear to me.

I wonder, was it that word got out or did Tim Cook sit very quietly and still in a chair at them until they melted with the tension?
I seem to recall a story about the first iPhone development where everyone got absolutely terrified when Jobs, Cook and Wozniak sat in their armchairs not moving for hours every time the development hit a wall...
Well...
Woz left Apple in ‘85 & iPhone was announced in ‘07- so your story is a trifle suspect.

edit: @Chazzle beat me to it! =)
