Hyundai is releasing a software update that brings CarPlay support to eight new vehicles, including the 2016 Elantra GT, 2015 and 2016 non-hybrid Sonata, 2017 Santa Fe Sport, 2017 Santa Fe, 2015 and 2016 Genesis Sedan, and the 2016 Tucson.

The vehicles gaining CarPlay support through a software update join Hyundai's previously announced CarPlay models, the 2016 Sonata, 2017 Elantra, and the 2017 IONIQ. Hyundai has not officially announced the news, but dealers were sent a notice about the update on May 19. Dealer information suggests the update is supposed to be available as of today, May 24.

Hyundai owners with an eligible vehicle can download the CarPlay update through the Hyundai website and are encouraged to go through the installation process themselves. A Mac or PC with an SD card slot or an external SD card reader is required to download the software and transfer the update to the vehicle's in-dash system. Software download times range from 25 minutes for Display Audio to more than three hours for Navigation if a map update is required.

CarPlay took several years to roll out to new vehicles, but there are now dozens of 2016 and 2017 vehicles available with CarPlay support. Apple maintains a list of vehicles that come equipped with CarPlay on its website, which sees updates every few weeks.

Update 5/25: Several MacRumors readers have confirmed that the CarPlay software update is now available for eligible vehicles.

(Thanks, Brad!)

I just bought a 2016 Sonata on Sunday, and am anxiously awaiting this update. Have not seen a download option for it yet, but hopefully it will be up soon. I was at the dealership earlier today and they said it should be up sometime tonight

I've been waiting months for this! But I have the 2015 sonata hybrid...

WHY IS IT ONLY FOR THE NON HYBRIDS?!?!?!

I talked to Hyundai at the LA Auto Show and they assured me that it would be released for my model.

Understandable but unfortunate that my 2015 Elantra didn't make the cut. Nice to see manufacturer's offering the ability to update their software to include CarPlay though. I doubt most consumers will ever see that it's an option but it's still nice to see.

I have the 2016 Tucson but don't have a CarPlay download available. I do have the Android Auto available.

Would love to see more car stereo head unit models with CarPlay. I drive some old brick of sh*t and it seems like thats not going to change for a while.

I have been waiting 20 months for this update. The advertised CarPlay support was the reason I got the 2015 Sonata and now more than halfway through a 36-month lease it is still not available. It never occurred to me to suspect vaporware in a car, but there you are.

I wonder if Mitsubishi will do this. Except I know they won't. I bough a 2016 lancer and will put in a pioneer for $500 this summer

Can somebody clarify for me?
Is this for cars (these listed cars) that have factory head units that do not have, and did not come with, CarPlay?
These cars, can essentially download and run a CarPlay installer and then have Carplay on their units?

I believe starting in January, cars that were being produced started to come with Carplay already installed. But for cars that were made before then, you have to get this update in order to get it

Anybody know how to get to the download page? Genesis 2016 here!

From what I heard it will just be on your My Hyundai page...Mine still has not shown up, so we will see, fingers crossed

I'm renting a Kia Optima right now, and its USB connection for basic music simply stops working randomly. I've never had this happen on other vehicles, and it makes me skeptical that their Car Play update will work well.
