I am officially wallet free

Because it is against the law not to have a government ID on your person. You can get arrested for vagrancy among other things, depending on the cop and the situation.

He's in the UK not the US he does have to carry ID. Technically he should have a licence with him when driving but in practise if he got pulled over by the police he would be given a 'producer' and he would have to present his documents at a police station of his choice with a certain number of days.

When you use loop pay, are you able to still aquire cash back on cards? Does the transaction showy as the merchant on your card? Or is a "loop pay" proxy shown? Otherwise the cc company won't honor and rewards.

Everything is as if I used the physical card, if it's debit it'll ask for PIN and cash back like normal. The transactions show up in online banking as normal. So fine with CC rewards

Putting a hole in a CA DL automatically makes it invalid. Not sure about your local laws.

Putting a hole in a DL doesn't invalidate the license, just means the card can't be used for the purchase of alchohol, renting a car, or the like... Your license is still 'valid' and if a cop pulls you over, he can issue a non-punitive fine until the license is replaced with a new one, but the license can still be used for identification purposes.

Many DL's get damaged and not replaced until they expire.

Good to know that this is confirmed. I assumed it was.

I don't know about California, but it's a common practice for the DMV in many states to use a hole punch to mark the license as invalid (e.g., if the license was suspended, etc.).

It is this way in California as well (or it was when we lived there... gosh... nearly a decade ago now )

So you don't carry any cash on you? You should always have some cash in the event of an emergency. Even if you wanted to be able to buy something at a street vendor, something small at a convenient store that has a $10 minimum credit charge, etc.

What happens if you want to buy something and the retailer doesnt support apple pay?

Im not going to bother with apple pay, I'm sticking with the cards.

I can't speak for the OP, but I haven't consistently carried cash in about ten years. If I am going somewhere where I will need to park, or if I am not sure about needing cash I will take $20 or $40 with me. My wallet doesn't even have a spot for cash.

It's usually when you don't expect it. I never think twice when I go out as I always have some cash on me.

Just for a few examples, if I go to a fair or event with a person collecting money for parking, they require cash. If you are at an outdoor event like a car show, fair, concert, etc. many venues that have those portable food trucks selling burgers and fries only take cash, if you are walking along the street and see a food truck that you want to buy at, many don't take cards. If you go to a smaller family owned convenient store, many have a limit on how much you need to spend to use a card. There are so many times when having even $20 in cash would be very useful. Having to plan out your day around either finding an ATM or having to go to a bank to get cash just seems like a waste of time, when slipping a little cash in your wallet could alleviate that.

I can't think of any issue that I have ever had. The stores I go to on a regular basis take cards, even the food trucks around here use Square. I also do not use ATMs more than a few times a year. It would work for everyone, but it works for me.

To be fair, some of those events like fairs, car shows, etc. can be foreseen and you can bring extra cash. But an increasing number of them take credit cards so it's becoming less and less of a problem. In fact, one of my cards was skimmed at an ice cream truck in a fair (if only Apple Pay could thwart them....).

They will learn in good time.:p

Been doing this for over a year now. But instead of the FOB, I have one debit card I carry in my front pocket with my phone. Nothing else needed, not even cash. Don't even bother taking my Drivers License with me, unless it is needed for something like renting a car. I maintain a digital copy of my license on an app called Cardmate (requires me to manually enter a swipe pattern to get in to it, so Touch ID/PIN can't be forced), just in case I get pulled over. As long as a cop can verify your identity, a physical copy of the ID is not required to be on your person.

P.S. I had been wondering about the Loop Pay FOB. I'm guessing you highly recommend it?

I'm not sure I've met many cops that wouldn't find a digital ID suspicious. That just makes faking your identity that much easier.

I've been on the search for a perfect 6 Plus case to keep my ID and one credit card but I've not found anything I like yet.

Apple pay + ID + one credit card = Goodbye wallet

Now if only I had one of those cars that don't need keys and you can use an app to open/start etc.

I never seem to run into that here. Food trucks take credit cards here and same with those parking guys at sporting events. Just went to an art show and a bridal show, with only my card and I fared fine. I honestly don't see how people get into this in other areas? Are we more card concentrated here or something? Now in Europe yes you do need cash as not eberywhere will take cards. But I'm in America.

Every street vendor here at the very least have Square. Some of the more fancier ones have a full blown wireless terminal (With Apple Pay ;))

You are aware that Europe is a continent with many unique countries. Differences can be as large as the difference between the US and Brazil. I am born in Norway, and in Norway you can pay with cards everywhere. Now I live in the Netherlands, and while you can use cards pretty much everywhere, some cash-only places exist. One difference between the US and the Netherlands, though, is that most places only take Maestro Debit Cards, and not Credit Cards. This because Maestro is virtually free for the merchant and the Card Holder, and Credit Cards cost a lot for both the merchant and the card holder here.

I'll be using a wallet for a while yet. A lot of smaller businesses around here do the $5-10 minimum for card use thing now so I pretty much have to carry cash anyway. :(

Though if EMV wasn't coming to the US any time soon I'd give LoopPay a shot. IMO EMV/Apple Pay won't be widely accepted for a couple of years because it looks like the majority of merchants won't make the October liability shift. LoopPay is probably still good for a bit for those who don't have chipped cards yet.

One of the very reasons I love my Chevy Volt. :p Being able to remote start and have it set your cabin temperature to comfortable and defrost the windscreen on cold nights is so worth it! Also love never having to take my FOB out of my pocket.

Well they're becoming official for legal use, so there's that.

I never had a fake ID but some girls I knew my freshmen year in college did. They even scanned properly when checked for legitimacy. I'm notnsurr a digital fake is any easier to fool a police officer with. They can look you up in ten seconds flat.

----------

As a side note, I love how people are saying to carry cash for safety's sake. How on earth am I going to be safer with cash in my wallet?

You are carrying a $600 to over $800 phone!. If you are robbed then there goes everything. Neither is safer but I prefer to still carry cash to the little daily things!
