I still have my 2G - I'm not willing to pay the amount O2 want for a 3GS.

The 2G case being so, so much nicer helps. I don't like the plastic on the 3G, and I bluntly despise the rounding. The flat back is so, so, so, so much better.

Im sticking with my 1st generation as well. I thought seriously about getting the 3GS, but now I'm thinking I'll hold out to see what next years update brings.

Me, I'm hoping a cell tower with a signal accessible from my home will make next year's update the one I cannot resist!

Did not seriously think about getting the 3GS, since I do still live in a dead zone. I love my first gen iPhone, but mostly use it for the occasional phone call or Maps function when I'm out and about, for the camera and otherwise as an iPod. At home, for browsing via WiFi, I generally use an iPod touch because it's faster.

I do love the look and feel of the 1st gen iPhone, even if it has become the fatman of my collection. I am more in love with the thinness of the 1st gen iPod touch, less in love with the shape and feel of the 2nd gen iPod touch (but grateful for the speaker). I have not seen or held any of the later iPhones. Waitin' for that cell tower... and maybe hoping for return of an aluminum-backed iPhone as well. I confess I take my 1st gen out of the Incase now and then just to look at the shiny Apple logo set in the matte aluminum  :)

After crushing my 1st generation, I went back to Blackberry.. This was my 6th BB at the time. Then I swapped to Verizon and got the Storm after fighting with my Voyager for 5 months. Finally, after realizing that I hated it, I got a 1st generation again, and I have no plans on swapping until it just dies and I can't buy another one that is in good condition..

I just hate the plastic backing.. I love the white.. it is extremely appealing, but that plastic.. ugh. I feel like it is as cheap as the Palm Pre.. I love the metal backing on the 1st gen. I love the heavy feel, and honestly, I never use copy and paste, or a Video Recorder.. Even with my phones in the past that have actually had both features, I might have recorded 10 times in the past 6 years.

Am I alone here? Who else decided not to swap to the 3g or the 3gs, and who thinks that Steve should re-think the plastic backing?

Just an opinion, but I am curious as to who else feels the same..

Hmmmm, You would rather use slow EDGE than 3G Speeds??

Honestly, people say they wont need these things, but once you actually get the phone, these things become useful, and even if you dont use them much, they are very handy to have. You cant MMS with the 1st Gen iPhone, and what if you happen to see a celebrity or a super nyce car and you take a pic, you cant really show anyone unless they are near you. And the compass has saved me from getting lost numerous of times, and I love the video recorder I am always using it, even though I thought I wouldnt really need it, but all these things are really handy to have for spur of the moment things

My 3GS has great reception but I guess that depends on the area....my only real complaint is the battery life

The 2G is still the tour de force in iPhone design, great battery life, resilient and looks like a luxury device. My dad has taken over mine and i still sneak a peek once in a while and remember the good ol days.

You see I think of it there are 2 types of users in the iPhone industry. You have the residential ones who do web browsing for fun, taking pictures and sending a message with it to another cell phone. They use IM and watch YouTube videos which require the 3G speeds.

Then you have the business type who need calendar and contact synchronization. The occasional web browsing. Sending emails or getting emails from the work place. Now ues 3G would be a nice feature but it is not needed to do what they need to do with their iPhone.

Now do not get my wrong it is a nice thing to have 3G, MMS, and tethering. These are great features. But I believe that the answer to the OP question would be is if the 2G does what it needs to do and you do not need other features then why upgrade.

I am sticking with my first gen as well. I don't get good enough signal to justify the price of a 3g or 3gs plan. Plus, I'm moving to the UK so there is no point in me upgrading with a new plan in the US when I'm leaving in 6 weeks.

With that said, it's a strictly economic reason and not a technology reason.

I still use my 1st Gen mainly because I do not plan on getting a data plan for 3G. I know that getting a data plan really unlocks the potential of the iPhone but I have a hard time paying $30 for 6GB when I have wifi access on campus, at work, and at home. During the weekday I spend 80% of my time in one of those 3 places so it's not bad. With the update to 3.0 software the 1st Gen is still nice for someone who does not use 3G. I wish Rogers had a 2GB for $10 or 4GB for $20, those data plans would be more suitable for my needs and I would have made the jump over to the 3G S. If the next update in 2010 is significant and we see some hardware changes, I most likely will upgrade.

Im sticking to my 2G also.

I was anticipating that this summer the iPhone would have a significant upgrade because most of the 2G contracts would be expiring and apple would have to come out with something special to keep them.

Maybe I dont really appreciate the 3GS cause i havent used it for long extended periods of time but i was just expecting more this past june when the phone was announced.

What would you like to see from the fourth generation iPhone?
- HD display
- ability to record and take pics at night/low light.
- ichat
- new design
- more space
- better call quality
- ability to have several apps open at same time
- better battery

There is no 3g here in my town.. at least not right now, so that does not matter to me. The rounded back makes me feel like I am gonna drop it.. like it is a bar of soap.. and there are no celebrities here lol except Billy Bob Thornton and I dont know if I would even recognize him because he looks just like everyone else around here.. but a friend of mine lives 2 houses down from Billy Bob and he is hardly ever home.. So that is not a big deal.. lol I will never use the Video Recorder, just like I never used it before.. and I will NEVER unlock my phone.. That is a risk of frying the motherboard.. so.. no thanks :)

No 2G owners why stop next year? why not wait for the year after that im sure apple will have a phone the year after that and the year after that. so you better wait cause 5 years from now the iphone will be crazy . so yeah just keep thoes 2g phones cause you never know what apple will bring in a few years..

that logic is SOOO stupid ..i have owned every iphone and i have ENJOYED every iphone ...when a new one comes out you can SELL it for alot of money depending on how well you took care of it.. then use that money to get a new one.. i am NEVER waiting cause "i will wait till next year" ..i will enjoy all my new features and the fast and great experiance of the new iphone untill next year . i will sell it and get the new one ..

I skipped the 3G because there was no 3G service. We got it in December, but figured to wait six more months for the 3GS. Very happy with the 3G network and GPS, plus all the 3GS goodness.

The logic isn't stupid, most of us won't upgrade until we see a model worth upgrading to, not just some incremental updates.

The first generation iPhone was a very well built and elegant device. But its metal backing was restrictive for all the wireless things people want these days (voice, data, wifi, gps, bluetooth etc). So I understand why that had to change. I don't think subsequent iPhones are as well built or as elegant though.

I have a 3GS for its additional functionality, but I miss the quality feel and battery life of my 1G.

My g/f still has the 2g. I bought it for her for Xmas the year it was launched. I remember thinking *She needs an ipod and a phone wouldn't be a bad idea. I knocked it out in one purchase! She doesn't have any desire to switch to 3G or 3Gs.

All 3

I have owned all 3 models since day 1... I loved the first generation... but in my opinion... too bulky and edge network?? but it was an iphone and I loved it! then the 3g came... wow sooo much better, faster, thinner.... it did crack a little how ever (the plastic) but not anything too noticable... it felt soo much better in the hand and pocket. Now the 3GS wow... it is freaking fast... I used to take phone calls and need to look up something at the same time but didnt want to because how long it would take to open an app... Seriously.... No wait time on opening apps makes the 3gs 100% worth the purchase...plus the camera opens so much faster and works way better. And for all those that complain about battery life or phone call quality..All 3 of my phones have lasted me the entire day.. (and I use it the entire day!) and I havent had many problems with dropped calls or whatever.. not like i did on sprint at least..

so sticking with the original ... is kinda like sticking with dail up internet or an attena for your TV ... sometimes we just have to move on.

SPOT ON.... this guy has got it... 100% agree!

i'm not switching cuz i dont want a contract, plus 3g is useless on tmobile.

BTW my MMS works fine on my 2g.

Besides that, I think about the 600 bux i shelled out to get this thing. (1200 including my wife's). It had better last.

It is slow though, long delays doing anything. I haven't used a 3g or 3gs, but i would expect it to be faster.

I'll upgrade when they have 64gb models AND when they come unlocked with a warranty. Pisses me off I can't (legally) have an unlocked iphone when I paid full unsubsidized price for it.

OKay.. I am waiting until my iphone dies completely. and hopefully then, that strange (my opinion) backing of the phone will be different.. I just dont like it. I was never going to do the "im gonna wait for the next one" I just dont see the point in spending money towards a phone that i dont like as well.. the 1st gen is fine with me for now.. but more power to ya if you like the newer models..

as for frying the motherboard.. okayyy.. my husband tried to jailbreak his first iPhone.. guess what? It would not even turn on anymore, and the computer did not recognize it.. soo I am assuming something got fried. so I asked someone on some random iphone forum at the time and that is what they assumed. (they were a admin. so i kinda figured they knew what they were talking about.)

So yeah what if i follow the rules? Maybe I dont have the money to buy new iphones every time one gets ruined.. I am a broke ass law student. So no, I WILL not try to jailbreak any more iphones, and neither will my husband.

Not to mention that extra warranty thing you get with your iphones (if you spend the what 70 extra bucks to get it) will be voided if you jailbreak it.. and that is according to an Apple rep.. because after we got the new iphone when my husbands got fried, I called them and asked them about it.. keep in mind i didnt know exactly how everything went.. I was new to Mac/Apple/iPhone.. so I had no clue.. sure I probably should not have asked the rep about it.. but I didnt know.. so whatever.

oh and another thing.. everyone talks about the 1st gen being slow.. I have had NO problems with it.. although it feels like a god send compared to the BB Storm.. you want to talk about SLOW... try answering a freakin phone call while you have an app up.. or even if you dont.. Thus the reason I went back to the iPhone..

well it does get slow if you jailbreak it and customize.. i still have my 2G and i still didnt sell it even when its in mint condition..

yes jenna if you dont have some knowledge of jailbreaking you should not. because you will end up like you did and not know how to fix it. but its simple..

OK if your going with the iphone for looks then whatever but if your going for the iphone for features then what the hell are you still doing with a 2g?

i have had all 3 models and by far the 3GS outbeats EVERYsingle one of them in every test ..

the 3GS is faster Period.. a jailbroken 3GS using mobilesubstrate is faster than stock 3.0 on a 2g and 3g ..

you have a better camera ..video recording ..mms tether capabilities.. more ram faster processor

the whole experiance of using an iphone has changed with the 3GS ..

seriously i think you are not making a smart decision by using a 2G.

and it seems as though you just have an iphone to say look i have an iphone and not for the iphone features

3G speeds are amazing i cant believe i ever lived with edge thinking its not that bad..well it is

and the back does NOT feel cheap at all..does not feel like any other plastic backing cell phone out there ..

We are not discussing if the 3GS is fast or not, we are discussing whether the 2G is a better phone by looks of it. I whole heartedly agree. The 3GS is awesome in speed, but the black plastic back kills it. I hate it.

I wish it were to go back to the old look of the 2G. Then I would by in a heartbeat. Originally I thought of buying the 3GS. But now, I'm rethinking it.
