I think this new iphone releasing in a few weeks will be a One-Off phone. An Anniversary edition if you will. it will not be called the Iphone 8, but instead a monikor like, Pro, X, or Anniversary Edition.

They threw all the new tech they can at it that is currently available and upcharged for it. This means no under the screen TouchID for now.

Next year when the True "8" releases it will include many of the new features on the Anniversary edition, but will include under the screen TouchID (hopefully they got it figured out by then), and face scanner. by that time the tech will be cheaper, and the 8 will come back down in pricing, much like the price the 7S will be.

That is my prediction, and will bump it in a year.

I can see two weak points with this theory:

1) By bringing TouchID back next year Apple would be publicly admitting they screwed up with their most expensive, flagship, anniversary, etc. whatever gadget. Not happening.

2) If they do manage to get TouchID under the screen next year, why keep both TouchID & the FaceID on the same device? They must be quite expensive components that double on the same function (safe phone unlocking).

Damn it, @one more, ya got me. :D

Apple will be selling the new Face ID hard. Saying all kind of good things. Better, quicker, more secure.

Then a year later, yea no, face id was a bust.

They won't bring Touch ID back! This year we will see the IPhone 7s, 7s Plus and the Edition/8/X or whatever it's called, next year they will probably drop the 7s Plus and instead as the rumours have already said will release an even bigger display 6.4" iPhone with all the features from this years Edition (or whatever) OLED screen and so on.

Whether they bring it back or not depends on how successful FaceID is. If it bombs hard and there's serious customer backlash, they'll have to swallow their pride and bring it back. But if it's even a moderate success, they'll take that and never look back, focusing on ways to improve it.

In a way that have brought back a discarded feature in the past; the 4" phone (SE). Realistically they probably just had a bunch of 5s shells that they needed to get rid of, and they wanted to introduce a less expensive iPhone, but they spun it by saying that they recognized that many of their customers still preferred a smaller phone and it's all about giving people choice. They could spin bringing back TouchID the same way.

The 7s will live on for a couple more years to be able to use the current touchid methods and by then everyone will be more used to facial recognition and/or there will be other methods...not just for IPhone but other flagships as well.

Apple doesn't have a tendency to bring back things they previously removed.

They only removed it from one specific, potentially one-off model. They didn't remove it from the main models (7S/7S+).

Next year, Apple will probably either remove TouchID entirely and replace it with FaceID on all models, or more likely, put TouchID under the display and add FaceID as well.

I agree with this, but that's not really "bringing it back". Technically it's not going anywhere because it will be on the 7s/7s plus this year.

I believe that home-button TouchID is gone after this year for regardless. The question is, is the future full-screen TouchID of facial recognition. That, I believe, is what Apple hopes gets answered with this year's phones.

This is exactly what i mean.

It was never technically removed from the mainline iphone. This new iphone is an anniversary edition they they choose to play around with.

The true 8 next year will retain a form of touch id and still come with face recognition.

Are we sure there won't be TouchID in this iPhone '8'/Pro/Edition? What if it's just a really well-kept, hidden secret and it's under the screen? I for one would BUY THAT UP IMMEDIATELY (and I'm cheap, so I usually look for the best deals a few months after release)...

There’s so much potential with Face ID that it’ll possibly make Touch ID feel archaic once we’re used to it. Really doubt they have plans to bring it back.

I'm looking forward to Face ID, but Touch ID has been just about perfect for me.

I love Touch ID as well. But if Face ID can work well it would obliviate the need for Touch ID.

Using iOS 11, so many times where you’re prompted for Touch ID to authenticate something - whether it’s deleting an email, checking something from the lock screen, etc. So many times where with Face ID there’s potential for seamless authentication just by using the phone. The whole locked/unlocked status will no longer be a thing. Pick up the phone and use it.

People thinking Touch ID would be brought back....There just aren't words.

Too priceless

Well, people said the same thing about Apple making another 4" phone after the 6 and 6+ came along, but then the SE came along. So you never know.

Hasn’t face recognition already been proven weak?

Not Apple's.

We'll have touchid for a long time, might not be on ALL phones, but the iphone 7s and legacy 7 are certainly going to continue to use it, as will laptops and ipads for a while at least.
