I'm looking forward to this Keynote getting
Here, so we can finally see this Face ID demoed and make believers out of those who apparently believe Apple doesn't know what they're doing.

Well, people said the same thing about Apple making another 4" phone after the 6 and 6+ came along, but then the SE came along. So you never know.

Not Apple's.

I’m really not trying to be smart, but what can  do to make face recognition so secure? Do you think it’s going to scan your eye retina or something, because I can easily hold a picture of someone’s face up to the scanner.

I’m wondering what spin Apple is going to put on facial recognition as well. Hard to believe they are dumping Touch ID after so much time spent establishing. It’s only existed for 4 years.

Agreed. I’m still amazed by posts such as “Yeah but facial recognition is useless in the dark.” Do you honestly believe Apple hasn’t thought through these issues?

For starters, given all the work behind ARKit and all the talk about 3D and IR sensors, I think using a photo is not quite going to bypass Face ID.

It is pretty crazy, especially since Touch ID has never really made it throughout their whole line of products. But imagining how it could work, and if it works well, I’d love to see Face ID come to iPads and Macs.

Have you seen Apple’s facial recognition in practice already?

It would be like criticizing fingerprint sensors prior to Touch ID that had existed for years and were quite terrible.

No, I actually have not seen any of Apple’s facial recognition yet. I’m also not very keen of the idea. It sounds like a lot of trouble or easily bypassed. That’s just my opinion though

“A lot of trouble or easily bypassed” based on what exactly? Apple’s facial recognition that you have yet to see?

If you actually base it on tidbits that have leaked out: faster authentication than Touch ID, no physical input required, works in the dark and at different angles, can unlock while laying flat on a desk. If Face ID is seamless, instant and removes the need for spending time to unlock functions with Touch ID, it sounds like it’ll make Touch ID sound like a lot of trouble.

Cool, but doesn’t that make it very easy to unlock by holding someone’s picture up to the scanner?

Reports suggests that it uses 3D scanning. A 2D picture won't fool that. Supposedly it analyzing more unique features on your face than TouchID can recognize on a fingerprint, and does it faster too.

1) Do you really think Apple hasn’t thought of that?

2) Given that IR and 3D sensors will be at play, I doubt a photo is going to trick Face ID.

I highly respect Apple, and you do make a very persuasive argument. At the same time, my professor and many others returned their iPhone 7’s when they first came out due to trying “all the tricks” and still not having cellular service. A very secure facial recognition program would be a huge step up to fingerprint scanners, but also could be a disaster if they aren’t up to par. It also seems to be a huge cost variance which could lead to a failing factor as well if it fails. Since, I’ve yet to seen any of Apple’s facial recognition, and there a huge amount of testing being done? It seems as not many people are very aware of it except the fact that it MAY be a possibility.

LOL @ some of these comments.

While I'm pretty sure you cannot fool FaceID with a photo... here's my take on it:

I'd be more worried about the fact that my phone is in someone else's possession than whether they can unlock it.

If I left my phone in a bar... fine... I'll just remote-wipe it.

So what are the chances they will have my phone AND a decent photograph of me? And how quick can they gather the photographs before I remote-wipe it? Or before it asks for the passcode?

You’d be surprised what people can find out about you on the internet once you’ve been using the internet.

I want the keynote so we can progress to the preorders and the plethora of shipping threads.

"OMG! My order just went to 'Preparing for shipment'! OMG! It just went back to 'Processing!' When will it ship? I preordered yesterday!"

You’d be surprised what people can find out about you on the internet once you’ve been using the internet.

No doubt.

My point is how quickly they can find this information before the phone is rendered unusable.

If someone finds my phone in a bar... there's nothing on it that says my name. It's just a black slab with a lock screen. They won't know who I am to go to my Facebook page to try to find a decent picture on the off-chance they can unlock it with a picture.

And like I said... I'll have probably remote-wiped the phone before the thieves can even begin their sleuthing... or it will be long enough for the passcode to kick in.

However... if I'm being targeted for some reason... where the bad guys know who I am and are following me around to pickpocket my phone and find a Facebook picture...

Then I've got bigger problems. :p

Are you seriously this ignorant as to the technology? This isn't offensive it's just a fact. I'll explain why a picture wouldn't do anything:

The system uses infrared light emitted from a transmitter on the face of the device. This light travels at..you guessed it, the speed of light into the environment and it is reflected by every surface the light reaches. The emitted light strikes objects at varying distances such as the contours of your face which is incredibly unique. The light reflects and is retrieved by the sensors on the face of the iPhone. The contours of the face means the light gets back to the sensor in varying timeframes and the computer can build a 3D map of the face due to this. If you held a photograph up, all light would come back at the same time and the sensor would know it was not a face, but a flat piece of paper.

Impossible to unlock with a picture.

Hahaha, do you think if someone printed a 3D model of a face, it could work? :p

I highly doubt it. A 3D printed face would have imperfections that it should pick up, and aside from that, I'm sure that Apple's algorithm is sophisticated enough to know how much light is expected to be reflected back from the skin. If you had a 3D printed object, it would reflect back a significantly different amount of light due to the molecular compositional differences between skin and whatever material the 3D face is printed with.

All right you primates!
1. The issue with facial recognition being fooled by a photograph was ALMOST news 10 years ago. Several groups were working on that when Toshiba Qasmio laptops were using it to unlock them. Think about that, it is the entire lifetime of the iPhone. Technology has advanced a little since then.
2. The facial recognition tech has already been stated to look for more features than the fingerprint ID, and none of you are worried about someone lifting your print of a glass at the bar? Or even taking a high res photo?
3. Apple leaks have mentioned 3D scanning and IR. A photo will not not have 3D or IR signatures to work with.
4. Have you SEEN a 3D printed head? If someone can afford to 3D print your 3D scanned head and paint it to match your face on a printer good enough to fool the camera, while heating it to match the IR signature, they can afford to buy whatever media they were hoping to steal with your phone/Apple ID. More importantly, they can afford to hire an elite black ops team to steal you away to Elbonia and hook your tender bits up to a car battery until you are begging to unlock the phone for them. Sheesh, you guys are watching WAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too much CSI and Scorpion.
5. If you have already decided that the technology is a flop, just switch to android now and go be happy with your new ecosystem.

Elite black ops bit was hilarious

Well, if that’s the case, I hope everyone enjoys their $3000 iPhone and when all the people want to dress up for costume parties and such for holidays then I hope their costume masks aren’t any inconvenience. Also, behind every FaceID and Fingerprint scanner is a password for fail safe. There are knowledgeable persons in the world with the technology that can get around these. Been there and done that. Me ignorant? Not conclusively. Skeptical of rumors and downfalls? Yes

I lol at the number of people saying something along the lines of "good luck unlocking your phone with a costume on!!"

A) Because most people don't wear costumes that dramatically alter their face more than a small handful of times a year, if that.
B) Wearing gloves or having wet hands really interfered with TouchID, and happened a LOT more frequently than costume-wearing, so this would be a improvement regardless.

I guess it would be an improvement to the people who cared about it, but I don’t have any problems getting into my phone fast enough using TouchID. I guess I study on more real life things instead of trying to improve it taking longer than half a sec to enter my phone with my fingerprint scanner. I won’t be using android and I won’t be using facial recognition.
