It's not just marketing. It's not some silly marketing gimmicks. They have good reasons for doing what they do and makin the products they make. I just want to know the reasoning behind it.

Siri was, and currently still is a marketing gimmick. They did have a good reason for marketing it though. It's just about the only thing that differentiates the 4S from the 4 for the layman.

Apple is not immune to making mistakes. Whether this screen is a mistake or not I cannot decide yet.

I don't really care about Apple's spin.

Either the product has merit or not.

My 4S is incredibly capable of meeting my current needs, and will be even more capable after iOS6, so Apple needs to have something hefty up its sleeve.

A lot hinges on what the iPhone 5's new hook is, and how potent the first Nokia's Windows Phone 8 devices are. I've got my eye on both as a possible new device.

I guess what I'm saying is I want Apple to make it officially cool to not have a giant screen and phrase it in a way that actually convinces me so I can stop feeling like I'm missing out by not having the largest or one of the largest screens. I want them to make a statement with the new phone to make me feel like its like that on purpose for a good reason so that I can feel content.

This post is the quintessential example of not thinking for yourself.

It really is religion.

This is the area in which Steve Jobs will sorely be missed. His true skill was as a spin master, and marketing genius. He could sell anything to anyone. It's the very foundation Apple is built on. Oh sure the products are good, but the "cool" factor is not a component they bolt or glue on.

It's not a certain "look" it's the cache of a guy like Steve convincing everyone that Apple products are "Magical". It's the same smoke and mirrors that cause people to go to Vegas and lose their money, while laughing it up. It is nothing more than words, assembled and said in a way that truly whips people into a frenzy.

No one, absolutely no one is as good as Jobs was. He was so good that people still hang on his every word, they recite it like its' their Bible. The hero worship is very thick within this group of believers.

Normal everyday people that can't even remember what they did on a certain day a month ago, can recite his words of years ago verbatim, without missing a beat.

The way they worship him is proof positive that sooner or later, the "magic" will fade and Apple will have to compete on a level playing ground. That day will be a turning point. Apple will have to dig down deep to compete without Steve Jobs.

I think a lot of people don't give enough credit to the Apple culture he cultured. The university and the spirit of his methods, ideas, and principles are well infused into the Apple leadership and cemented by the astoundingly wild success and legacy achieved by the whole company in the unibody era. That success cemented a loyalty to the spirit and methods of approach he pioneered and proved to be the path of light and success. Anyone who was a part of that on a high level must feel immense pride being a part of that rockstar superstar of a company. People were convinced enough and he definately proved the point that his way was the best way to the point where people won't backstabbingly deviate from what worked after his passing. If anyone ever proved a point that their way was the best way it was Steve Jobs.

The success comes from championing certain views and methods which a lot of other people in the Apple "family" share.

A big part of his presentation mythos was based on his past and him being a living legend giving those presentations. But that legacy lives on in the elegance of the company and all the other role players.

We cannot underestimate the significance of the legacy he passed on and act like he was the only one to keep Apple ahead. Apple is an approach and way of thinking, not just one man. Simplicity and elegance and the investment of that promise in all the details is what creates the "magic."

Be careful to not forget that there was a good reason to push FaceTime and Siri. They represent paradigm shifts that did not exist before and the reason behind the push was to encourage the common masses to adopt the tech vs just hoping some early adopters and techies will use it after its available. Both were underwhelming in practice, but the point was to encourage people to "embrace the future" now. The marketing wasn't just for Apple products but rather pushing the industry forward and getting the masses to embrace something that they would otherwise not embrace.

I don't use neither FaceTime nor Siri but I do understand the importance for the marketing push. They aren't trying to trick you into a gimmick my tech-inclined friend, if you don't want to use it, they were trying to aware everyone and your grandma to the possibility of a more elegant and organic personal computing experience in a way nobody else could have the influence to.

This post is the quintessential example of not thinking for yourself.

Everyone wants to feel like they are apart of something. This is not a criticism although the cynics would see it as such. Ok so it's a cult? But a fancy one with shiny fun objects? Ok cool. That just makes it funner. Like its a big club.

Problem?

Of course they will tell you, what ever they think their fan base needs to hear, to help best sell their brand new phone. Marketing 101

The new iPhone5, it is the iPhone4/4S on Viagra with a boner, it's longer now.

Oh man, got a chuckle out of that one. Laughing too at all the hand wringing about screen size. It will be what it will be, and everyone will get used to it.

I don't need Apple to tell what I want or don't want in my phone. They can "spin" whatever they want but it won't change my feelings. That said, how they implement the changes into the final product can certainly change the way feel about the initial design. It is certainly possible that they can implement the taller screen in a way that I won't hate the thought of it as I do now. There isn't a way to make the two tone back in the leaks less ugly though.

I like Apple and the iPhone as much as anybody but I'm just telling the facts, Steve was the spin master.

You can't become a market leader by selling ****.

Steve was just extra adept at creating interest in what are already good products.

You have to remember that some people can't tell the difference between 99c store Dijon mustard and Grey Poupon.

So to them all that is left is the idea that it's just a scheme to get more money.

"But they are both Dijon mustard" they would say.

"And people just buy Grey Poupon because of marketing."

The whole time they don't even have enough taste to differentiate between quality and the cheap imitation. In fact they hate the idea of Grey Poupon because it's fancy but the whole time the sensible man of a certain taste for the finer things is sitting there laughing.

Lol

I can think of a few reason for an elongated iPhone but the main one being when the phone is in landscape for watching films or anything it'd be more of a widescreen view, much like many of their other products

If the new iphone comes with that tall screen... I'll be geting a Galaxy S3

Save yourself some aggravation and buy a nexus or a nokia windows phone 8 device.

I own a S3 and regret it. Cheezewiz is atrocious and with all the IMEI, triangle away, CWM etc crap to figure out a custom ROM is not worth fixing cheapsung's stupididty. Not to mention holding that mini tablet is annoying. I found that the maximum i can tolerate for a smartphone is 4.3 inch and nothing more.

Too bad the nexus body is also made by them instead of HTC.

I will be switching to a nexus this fall if it is not made by cheapsung AND is not a mini tablet, or a nokia windows phone 8 or iPhone 5. One of these three for sure depending on which impresses the most. I am done dealing with these headaches.

Fortunately, you don't have to sign a two year contract for Dijon Mustard!

And I agree about someones analogy about Apple telling everyone - "You have to have this new Siri" - when selling the same style iPhone as the previous release (iPhone 4S). I used Siri for about two days, saw the battery usage, and havent used it since - but thats just me. Im weird about things running my battery down that I dont use.

That's funny. I feel content buying something that I know I like, want, and need. I don't need the company making money off of me to tell me the reason I should be content with their product.
If they don't give you a good reason, will you still buy the new iPhone and just not be content?

About a year ago I argued that the screen should not be 3.5 anymore and should be 4-4.5. I want to see why they don't make it bigger. I have neer owned a bigger screen so I don't know if I care or not. I definately don't care enough about screen size to try any other phone and give up iOS just for a screen. I am not a person that watches movies on my phone. I have my 130 inch HD projector for that. (with HDMI out from my phone)

I don't care enough to do anything about it, but I hope they have done some studies or something and made the logical choice to keep it where it is. That would make me feel better knowing the screen doesn't get bigger for a reasonable well thought out reason.

I have used a bigger screen and i can tell lugging around a giant phone is not fun at all. However, at least 4 inches is a good start for the iPhone screen. It helps when reading some professional ebooks with figures etc in them.

As for websites, it is as annoying to surf on a 4.8 inch screen as a 3.5 inch screen for more than an hour. I would rather buy a 10 inch tablet to be really comfortable.

I agree with Bobby that I like to know what unique design choices Apple makes in new devices.

It's not that I need affirmation of my purchase but rather it's interesting to know what Apple did that other competitors may not have done. I remember Phil Schiller talking about the A5 and how it did Image Processing and audio stuff right on the chip.

These are little things but they help me understand what features I can count on.

Find contentment within yourself. The reality is that you are missing out if it is something you want, but you also prefer iOS. Everything in life has trade-offs.
