Samsung, HTC, etc. would KILL to have the luxury of having ONE phone be their sole offering. Manufacturing 101: Make one model and sell millions, not make a million models and sell one.

Not sure I can totally agree here. You think if Ford or Toyota only made one car instead of having 15-20 different models for a customer to choose from this would be good business practice? No way. What if Nike only made one model of shoe? Or Nikon only made one camera? "One item fits all" is not good for business.

Let's just say Apple will sell 5 million of the next iPhone in 1 year. If they had 3 different models to choose from, do you think that automatically means they'd sell 15 million? I doubt it. It means that some of the 5 million customers they'd already have if they only sold one model would buy one of the other 2 models. Maybe a few more people would jump onboard, but not 3x their base sales. There are only so many people on the planet who are going to buy an Apple phone, of any size.

Ok, you're thinking, what if it was an extra 2 million sales; say 1 million people buy a smaller version and 1 million buy a larger version. Great for Apple, right? Wrong. To give 2 entirely new phones all the design and research attention they give to the current phone, they'd have to hire new designers and engineers. The R&D costs would be enormous. Apple doesn't tend to just slap stuff together like other companies, in case you haven't noticed.

And what about manufacturing costs? Instead of building millions of one phone, they would be building millions of 3 phones. Triple the effort in terms of sourcing parts and materials, retooling, etc.

Wouldnt be that much more. They are built in China. Once the development is done, its off to the sweat shops to be built.
Samsung were doing it building different models just for the US carriers till this year when they told them to take a hike. Prices were still the same as the GS3 with one model for all the carriers.
I dont like that AT&T got the HTC One X and T-Mobile got the One S which has a lessor screen...but it does have a 4.3" screen which i like.

I think they would sell a larger version by a 2-1 ratio...if not 3-1. If they had a 3.5", 4" and a 4.5"....i think they would sell a ton of them. 15 million? Maybe not but they would sell a bunch...and imo it wouldnt be near as many 3.5" screen phones as the other two.

Yes because the only one that isnt 6 figures to purchase on that list is the Porsche. Tiny market indeed. Think ive seen maybe 5 Rolls in my lifetime. The Lamborghini dealer here in town has ONE salesman...lol

Lol I live in West LA so I see 5 Rolls Royces like every day. Sometimes 2 at the same intersection. I also see way more iPhones vs any other phone.

Ohh, why didn't say so earlier? So silly of us, because before this, we didn't realize the tiny happenings in your life represented the rest of the world.

It's revealing, isn't it?

Apple fans, including myself, should be embarrassed by postings like his.

There's nothing to be embarrassed about unless you're a judgemental person. I am only reporting the realities of what I see in society. All the cool people use the iPhone, locally, internationally.. Everywhere. Thats just science.

It doesn't matter. When the new iPhone comes out it will be the best selling phone of all time and will shatter all records.

Keep bragging in the calm before the storm.

I guess what I'm saying is I want Apple to make it officially cool to not have a giant screen and phrase it in a way that actually convinces me so I can stop feeling like I'm missing out by not having the largest or one of the largest screens. I want them to make a statement with the new phone to make me feel like its like that on purpose for a good reason so that I can feel content.

The **** did I just read.

Well who knows. Maybe those cool people(.lol, what a dope) need to be coddled just like you do. Even though you already know they are going to tell you it is revolutionary to make you feel better when deep down you already said you don't feel good about it. But hey, reassurance feels good when your not sure.
And i dont care how many imaginary Rolls you have seen.

What a childish response...

Of course. The official finished product will look a million times better than the mockups, and the leaked parts we have seen.

Apple is getting KILLED by Samsung!

Lol, i would rather have Apple killed by HTC or Motorola than the plastic imitation king aka shamesung. Too bad quality takes a back seat to hype nowadays.

The amount of samsung fanboys i see berating other android competitors nowadays shows that "sheep" usually just needs a new hyped up toy. If it is not an iPhone, it is a galaxy. iFans, meet the sFans!

Yeah, I'm surprised by how many Samsung fanboys there are. I used to think they were android fanboys or apple haters, but then they start hating in the HTC One X, which is much better than the Galaxy 3 IMHO, and it's just weird they have a following.

In any case, I think the 4" 16x9 screen will be just fine, while I would have preferred a 4.3", 4" will suite me.

Not really interested in this new model. There's nothing different about it other then a 4" talk screen. It basically looks the same. Now could it change on sept 12th? Sure. But I may be looking at 2 more years of my iPhone 4.

if they could have sales the same whether they offered 1 model or 15, you bet your ass they would pick 1

Since the phone will not be wider and only taller, text will not be bigger than it current is correct? Or anything for that matter other than videos right?

Save yourself some aggravation and buy a nexus or a nokia windows phone 8 device.

I own a S3 and regret it. Cheezewiz is atrocious and with all the IMEI, triangle away, CWM etc crap to figure out a custom ROM is not worth fixing cheapsung's stupididty. Not to mention holding that mini tablet is annoying. I found that the maximum i can tolerate for a smartphone is 4.3 inch and nothing more.

Too bad the nexus body is also made by them instead of HTC.

I will be switching to a nexus this fall if it is not made by cheapsung AND is not a mini tablet, or a nokia windows phone 8 or iPhone 5. One of these three for sure depending on which impresses the most. I am done dealing with these headaches.

This guy either didn't own an s3 or is just plain stupid. Samsung are brilliant. They make rooting/putting custom roms on their phones so easy and should be thanked for it. You try doing all that with an HTC, much harder (that's if HTC unlock the bootloaders at all).

Samsungs may look a bit cheap on the outside but believe you me, theyre not on the inside

That has nothing to do with the thread topic.

The S3 doesn't run iOS and is not an iPhone.

Actually in some ways it does. (Regarding people potentially switching). You made reference to wanting Apple to spin the new design in such a way that made you feel warm and fuzzy about what was being released. Others have stated they don't need the spin and will take matters into their own hands if what is rumoured is what is in the end delivered.

Fortunately, you don't have to sign a two year contract for Dijon Mustard!

Haha !! I had to laugh at this!!

I believe that Apple tries to make the best products possible.

If they are making the screen that size, it sends the message that they believe a bigger screen is not better than a 4" screen, otherwise they would have made it bigger.

So if they are trying to make the best balance, then that is the conclusion.

It's true though, a bigger screen is still a small screen and watching videos or surfing the web is still going to be happening on a relatively small phone screen.

Slightly bigger is still not big enough to give tradeoffs like comfort in the hand and pocket.

They can make any size they want. But they chose to make it 4".

I am curious to see what they say and find out why they chose that.

----------

I also hope the speakerphone for music gets louder.

I used to think the way you do too Bobby, well, not quite that simplistically, but noting how (yes it' is a very green practice and is good for the money aspect) how Apple keeps recycling old parts from units they are no longer selling into new products with small incremental upgrades, kinda really depressed me. If there are stronger chips, processors etc on the market, why not just release a bloody phone or laptop that has ALL of the current goodies in it so people don't HAVE to upgrade in a couple of years to Apple's version of the newest and best tech.

Now I feel that it is all about business and profit. How can we maximize the profit on our old tech and on our newly released tech? How can we milk and cater to the profit we are making on apps with our developers. I mean, we can't have them all stressed out by having to design new app updates that caters to a different dimension of screen? People will start screaming FRAGMENTATION!!! Also, it would likely cost them more to keep balance on iOS updates between old tech that no longer would be compatible with the newer and larger screen devices and things like LTE that have to be driven by more powerful chipsets. Heaven forbid that they have to have 2 different versions of the same app for the older models like the 3GS and the newer models if the screen was 4.3+? It seems they are trapped themselves within the eco system they have created. Also, I can understand them wanting to release a product that is great and not have issues, which is likely why they are waiting on LTE, to have a chipset that saves enough energy to work within the new/old tech combination they use for their phones.

Any data to support this claim?
(regarding Samsung beating on Apple) I suggest with great concern, the massive hit that Samsung's company will take if Apple does with the current patent lawsuit that is currently ongoing.....

I too, see more iphones than I do see Samsung/Android devices. The realities that YOU see, are often different than what others see. I have a friend who has a VASTLY different outlook on life than what I do. Perception is everything.

As far as all of the cool people using iPhone, wow, just wow.....how very delightfully grade school of you Bobby. Thank god we have you to judge accurately coolness factor of all humans within your field of site and perhaps the world based on what smartphone they use!! I am relieved that I can now eliminate the worry of talking to uncool people if I see them using a Windows or Android phone!!! Phew!!!

Science my ***.... Have you considered that perhaps not all people of the world are as privileged as you and can afford paying a $45+ cell plan on top of a $600.00+ phone? Perhaps you missed that small detail in your analysis of the world's cool people?

Yes, iPhone will sell well. It is like a juggernaut that is out of control, but something to reflect on. RIM was sitting on the throne of cell phones a few short years ago and look what happened to them? Apple may never go down that hard because they diversify, but I suspect over time that since Android has made and continues to make leaps and bounds that Apple will continue to lose market share, unless they win massive lawsuits that ensure they have a monopoly on all of the features that make smartphones fun and easy to use.

Since the phone will not be wider and only taller, text will not be bigger than it current is correct? Or anything for that matter other than videos right?
True. You'll get vertical height (picture stacking things higher in your already crowded office), but not width. You're still stuck with a 2" wide screen.

Flipping the phone horizontally for example will not give you more height for text either, just more width. For what, I don't know.

For the few who do a lot of movie watching on their phone, that's where the advantage will show. That and people who desire another row of icons on the screen. Most web pages will still have to be zoomed in on, to read the small text.

There's no argument that a taller screen will be better than what we have now, just not much better and nowhere near the space you get on all the other high-end smartphones on the market.

What??

Why???

(you don't have 200 dollars, do you?) :(

LOL. Of course if i say something you don't like, i don't own the device. Classic fanboy retort.

Why should i have to install a custom ROM? No one needs a custom ROm on a gnexus with stock jellybean. That should be how it is on every other phone.

I used to flash my captivate extensively but then i had no issues with IMEI or the stupid download count etc etc that samsung included with the S2 onwards. Hacking a S3 may be easy because of ODIN and no S-off/on crap like HTC, but the implications are not worth it.

The inside is not what i hold when i use my phone. Also HTC One X and the S3 share the same brains if you will. And i would rather use a One X than a S3.

It completely depends on the product. I don't think the poster was suggesting that samsung and other do "have that luxury," only that they would like to if possible.

Yup, I agree. My iPhone 4 has been good to me for the past 2 years and I am confident it would last another 2 if I decided to keep it. Never saw the need to upgrade to the "4S".

I live in Los Angeles and visit many crowded, popular, busy hotspots. Venice Beach, 3rd Street Promenade, Hollywood & Highland, Dodger Stadium, shopping malls, the Grove, etc. Never, ever not even one single solitary time have I ever seen anyone pull out their iPhone and start using Siri. If it's such a useful feature, why am I not seeing people use it?

To the OP, I have no doubt that during the keynote they will address the screen size and will justify why a larger screen is not necessary. They will fluff it up and make it sound like increasing the screen by only .5" is the greatest decision they ever made. Some people will lap it up and agree, and others will roll their eyes.

Hardly, the one X uses the tegra 3 chip and the S3 uses the exynos chip

Whilst the CPU performance is similar, the S3's mali-400 GPU destroys everything
