I Bought A Neglected House!

Finally catching up on the videos. Seems like you have a TON of hard drive space that's backed up and backed up. Have you run into issues of a system crashing and losing your primary drives?

I would love to have a server for video cameras and handbrake ( ;) )

I lost 3 years of RAW photos due to a hardware failure once, never again!

Edit: I just added it up, I have a little over 100TB of raw drives, not including SSD's.

3 years? Serious question...but have you ever gone back and edited a RAW file after it's been in storage for over a year? I used to be a serious photographer (step down from professional...I did some weddings, but mainly for hobby with pro gear) but going through some of my backups, I realized that I was saving them for no reason. I edited them back then the way I liked and I have them all up on my Smugmug site. It's been a relief not having to worry about all that.

Oh...and your link in your sig here is broken.

Yes! Actually there is stuff I'd love to make some big canvas prints of, but I no longer have the high-res originals to work from.

Thanks for the tip on the sig!

I've gone back and edited some of mine. It's exceedingly rare, but there have been times that I went back and photos. It's mostly photos that I considered snap-shotty and unworthy of editing at the time, that take on a different meaning and significance ten years later... that sort of thing. Also, it's really impressive what modern software can do compared with the software we were using back then.

I'm not a professional, just an enthusiast. I have poor shutter finger discipline and often don't have the time to go back to old photos because I am swamped with the photos I'm actively taking. I'd save a lot of space by purging the old RAW files, but so far the file space necessary is manageable.

To Lumberman, I like this housing project - thanks for documenting and sharing your journey!

Nice! I should go back through my stuff and print them out. Canvas prints are nice. Would like to do that someday.

I have been thinking of getting a DSLR again and playing around with it.

oh and yeah, watching that last video, I was like...there’s a switch behind the door now! Haha curious as why you didn’t have the door open the other way?

The SLR I'm shooting my time lapses with is my old T3i, I hadn't used it in years. That data loss really took the wind out of my sails when it came to shooting. Even though it only does 1080p30 it is working well for what I'm doing with it. I put the MagicLantern software on it to remove the video recording length limit and add a few extra features.

I have a 2Ti that I modded with a mount for old Minolta Rokkor glass, I did that before micro 4/3rds cameras were super popular and Minolta adaptors became common. My favorite lens to use on that camera is a 125/2.8, it's a real gem of a lens, but not ideal for documenting the home project, lol.

I thought about having the door swing the other way, but I figured that would take away usable floor/wall space. Yeah, it sucks that the switch is behind the door, but I told the tenant it's cool if he just leaves the light on when he leave if the switch is annoying. Turns out, he has an Echo and smart light bulbs and is just using those. When I come back to that room and gut it I'll move the switch.

Ah so you have renters already? I was going to ask that but forgot.

125 lens? Yeah, might have to shoot from the neighbors yard across the street :p might try a 25mm lens to get more of the room?

Why did you go with wired cameras vs wireless? Do you use a VPN, and if so, what's a good one? I have heard of Nord but not sure what would be good.

Debating on using my mac mini as file server. I wish I could set up something 1/4 like yours, but my computer skills are lacking.

I have one renter already, he moved in a couple weeks ago, and it's working out well. A couple days ago the neighbor asked me if I was looking for a renter because he has a friend looking for a place. The timing might work out well to get that guy in the house.

Most of the stuff I'm shooting in the house is with a Canon 10-18, it works pretty well.

I work in live events and have grown to not trust wireless anything. Wired stuff just works, all the time. Plus, the less stuff you have taking up wireless spectrum, the better things work for the stuff on the wireless network. I do have the wireless setup like a corporate network, so each person has their own login. I took it a step further and each person have their own vlan as well.

I use Mullvad for my torrent VM because they make it dead simple to setup on a Linux machine, and they don't keep user logs. I also use ZeroTier to connect all of my stuff, it works VERY well, no matter what network I'm on.

My computer knowledge comes from just trying stuff and being willing to start over when things don't go well. Having gear around to tinker with helps a lot.

ok, so now I have even MORE questions. haha

I understand that wired is better...just wondered. So I guess I shouldn't ask about a mesh system. :) I googled Mullvad and ZeroTier to see what they were about. Do you use both as a VPN?

Would like to discuss torrents but not sure if that's a public discussion or not.

I have an interest in computers and this discussion and watching you talk about your servers has me thinking about setting one up here. But I want to start out cheap. Those ones that look like the Apple Xserve ones (flat pizza boxes)..did you buy those new?

Sorry if I'm asking too much....answer when you can.

I use Mullvad purely for torrenting, nothing else. ZeroTier can be used like a tradition VPN, but that actually isn't what it was built for. ZeroTier was built for exactly how I'm using it, to connect devices over the internet as if they were all on the same local network. Think if it as a virtual network switch, all the computers connected don't know they are not on the same LAN, they just know they have an additional IP LAN address.

For torrents, I don't know what the MR policy is, but have a look at Radarr and Sonarr ;-)

My blue servers are these:

The black servers were built by DakTronics and used to be in the Cotton Bowl stadium running the jumbotron and scoring system. Those cases aren't available anywhere else.

All in know a dude in small town lived in small town driving to look normal compared to everyone else! He was great guy and was in person investEd in rare mineral stocks and lived a strong middle class living arrangement! He died at age of 97 and happy to help one nephew to get an engineering degree so his kid could help him around his house! For the kid’s sister became a Doctor and he joke she keep him alive all these years!

Just wanted to say that I'm enjoying these videos. I'm not much of a handyman myself, but I watched the first video a few weeks back & got sucked into catching up on all of the ones I had missed until then. I now have a reminder to check the site on Tuesday nights to see the new video.

He was showing off room to potential renter 8 days ago. No video on Tuesday. It’s now the 18th. hope that everything is ok!

I am going into withdrawals 😂

I'm ok-ish, got the flu, then my back went out on me. Because of that I wasn't able to work on the house at all last week, and likely won't get anything done this week either.

What work for was icy hot on back muscles and stenching on wall in house, keeping you feet plat and stretch toward the wall and will stretch those stretched out mussels in you lower back! Doing this as I get older right before bed keeps my back good! I learned this trick from a training injury when in Army in my 20s! I am now 50 and those stretches help my back to stay healthy!

Agree with what has been posted. Hope you feel better soon, take care. Also, hope that the renter worked out.
