And when Apple developes another type of biometric authentication, we will see threads stating Face ID sucks blah blah blah.

I don’t think anyone is saying Touch ID sucks, just that Face ID is a positive step forward. Technology is always improving so there will always be something new replacing the old. If they come up with something better than Face ID, I’m all for it.

Well, we already have unlocking our Mac's with the Apple Watch...why not enable that on the iPhone? :) (once you get close enough of course...don't want it unlocking when you walk by).

My stupid Face ID never works when my eyes are wet!

Time to patent ‘Arse ID’ I think.

I hear that won't be all it's cracked up to be. Sorry - felt a little cheeky there.

What's with the disclaimer in every post, even if it is really obvious?

I think the better route is to have multiple biometric recognition. Not only it's more secure, it provides a fallback option/alternative.
Looking forward, I can see FaceID to be an "invincible" biometric, and it will just work seamlessly (you looking at the phone, automatic unlock). And then for more secure things, a second biometric like TouchID can be used. So maybe we won't realize "FaceID" in the future. It will be just built-in and automatic (phone is unlocked when you look at it, phone is locked when you are not). Just a guess.

The reason some of us like TouchID so much is probably because Apple did it so well. It's not so rosy in the Android camp. I have multiple Android phones with fingerprint sensor, and they all only have good detection in the beginning. Through time, almost all of them are either unreliable or becomes slow. TouchID is the only one that is consistent (until there's too much grime on the sensor, of if the finger is wet).

Showered about an hour ago, try to unlock my iPhone, Touch ID fails, have to enter passcode

Happens enough times to start hating Touch ID

Update:

Guys, I just successfully registered the knuckle of my thumb as Touch ID. Works like a charm, even minutes after shower. My problems solved. I don't hate Touch ID anymore. Thank y'all for the input.

Son use lotion, drink plenty of water, eat greens. Touch ID not working is not iphones fault. You have dry skin. That’s good that because of iphone you discovered that you have skin problem otherwise you wouldn’t have find out about your skiing condition which would have progress into arthritis. Please son take care of yourself, don’t forget to look after for yourself because of these material things. Please, okay, now go and drink 2 glasses of water go........

To be fair, if you have both in a device at the same time, then it’s only as strong as the weaker option.

The fallback has always and likely will always be a passcode.

Partially that's how technology works, over time technology is superseded by something else that others may or may not agree with based on changes. But not everybody likes change, which is what you're seeing for the most part on these forums about Face ID, yet no one Has experience with it yet to make that judgment call.

I'm actually surprised that we're not all having NFC chips injected into our hands (yet). Good-bye signatures. Good-bye cards.
The id in the chip is YOU - for everything. Then just have the point of sale terminal ask which method of payment you want to use (debit, credit, PayPal, bitcoin, etc).

Have to be some insane level of encryption so they can't be cloned though. :)

Come on now. We are talking about Apple here. It wouldn't be Apple if they didn't force you to use what they want you to use because it's what's best for you but you just don't know it yet.

Yeah if only we had kept floppy disks. It was short sighted to remove them from the original iMac. Same with optical drives in the MacBooks.

So why do they give us an options for passcodes? That 4 digit passcode is pretty weak.

I didn’t know you could still do 4 digit passcodes. It made me switch to 6 digits a while ago. 4 digits isn’t great as there are only 10,000 possible combinations, but it’s better than a pattern or something.

4 digits are fine, provided you enabled the "Erase Data" option (after 10 failed passcode attempts).

I still have a custom one though...much longer.
