I can't believe I'm saying this, but I just can't wait to ditch Touch ID once and for alllllllllllll

No. This is not a hyperbole. This is exactly what they are doing right now.

Lollll so much trolling on MR these days. Ok I’ll bite. Please describe how Touch ID is disastrous? You know, the form of biometric identification that is now universally adopted by every major manufacturer? Yeah that one.

And since you’ve never used Face ID, you are in no position to make any judgements on it.

I can't wait to read about how Face ID will work for everyone. I see some posts about enthusiasm over it but in real life usage, we'll have to wait and see how it goes.

As for Touch ID, I still find it to be very reliable. I can't imagine that Face ID will work 100% of the time either. So in reliability, they will likely be very similar.

I've had a great experience with Touch ID, but I'm willing to give Face ID a chance. How can I lose? I have a 14-day return window.

Disclaimer: This is intended as a serious reply. Thank you.

There's also no evidence that it doesn't
[doublepost=1508507601][/doublepost]I'm right there with you OP I didn't have many issues with Touch ID until I switched to the SE and am using the old touch ID but on my 7 Plus it was excellent.

You mean...TouchID 2 works better than the original TouchID?

Surprise.

So why do they give us an options for passcodes? That 4 digit passcode is pretty weak.
Easy to implement in software without tradeoffs. Leaving Touch ID in while adding Face ID would be a massive waste of component resources for no significant benefit. The phone is costly enough as it is.

It seems a lot of iPhone users feel Touch ID is very significant. Android manufacturers have placed multiple biometrics in there devices and still cost less than the X which only has one that's not even proven yet.

Touch ID is not that disastrous. And even if I haven’t used Face ID, that won’t stop me from judging it based on info I get from somewhere. But if Touch ID is not bad, why ditch it in favor of Face ID? Is Face ID superior in every way? I mean, every way? Security? Privacy? Performance? Implementation? Or more?

Well, you do not need to argue with me on these points. And the people who are capable to argue won’t even bother reading my post.

The only time Touch ID doesn’t work for me is when I use my nipple

Umm...don't you still have to swipe to get the home screen after FaceID unlocks? (ie. capacitive touch screen still won't work with a wet finger). Or am I missing something? :)

And, yes, I hope they make that user-customizable....I think it's silly to require a gesture after the phone is unlocked.
I love that this generation of people sees “swiping to homecreen” as a genuine complaint to knock the most technologically advanced consumer biometric ever made. “But duuuuude. I have to like...move my finger”

Exactly how reliable are those additional biometrics that Samsung or android has Added? I'm not saying they are useless, but there have been many reports with inconsistencies of the iris scanner not operating normally, facial recognition disparity, etc. Where as Apple, they invested in one biometric with Face ID and spent millions in research and development to ensure this type of technology will be executed to protect the consumers security. In a short time, we will know how well it actually performs.

"This generation" :) Heh Just how young do you think I am? :) I'm 49 and I work in technology. I was pointing out that all of the people that think it's going to resolve their wet hands issues with Touch ID had a wee bit of a problem still.

Edit: And my criticism that you still have to swipe to open the phone? From a usability standpoint, what's the benefit to the user of doing that? I somehow doubt a lot of people need to protect against inadvertently unlocking their phones (how often are you going to stop and look at it?) :)

The touch ID or other FPS has been around for a while. You think Apple is the only one the spends time and money on this technology. Btw... Authentech was the one who did R&D for biometrics long before Apple thought about using Touch ID on the iPhone. Guess who Authentech was partnered with before Apple purchased them? That's right! That evil company we know of named Samsung. Let me guess, you think Apple did R&D for Face ID as well?

What else would we do? Have the phone unlock AND go to the home screen automatically when it detects your face? Then you wouldn’t be able to quickly glance at your notifications.

And no. Face id definitely resolved the issue with wet hands. Swiping a wet finger across a capacitive touchscreen is a hell of a lot easier than trying to get a fingerprint to read a wet finger

I guess we'll see won't we? I wonder how many people will be dropping their X's on their bathroom ceramic tiles because they thought it would be so much better without Touch ID. :D Wonder how grippy the glass back is when your hands are wet? :)

Enter in numerical passcode and move on with your life. Next you'll be complaining about face ID not working after showering and can't wait for Breath ID. You millennials are hopeless :)

I love made up scenarios

We're not talking about people with wet hands then? :)
Well you’re doing what everybody typically does before Apple releases a new technology. Reject it based on ridiculous made up situations that are barely worth thinking about let alone talking about. Remember when Touch ID came out?

“Well now a robber can just cut off your finger and get on your phone! Gasp”

“Why even have it on the phone? I can enter my 4 digit password faster than it unlocks. It’s not solving any problems. Lameeee”

My advice? Wait to try it before saying it’s crap

Oh, you're funny. You think I'm rejecting it? I'll be frantically trying to by one at 3:01AM ET on the 27th just like thousands of other people.

I'm saying the wet hand crowd shouldn't assume that Face ID is going to allow them to interact with their phones a lot easier with this phone. It's not that simple.

If wet hands make a glass phone more slippery, then they're much more prone to dropping it. If it's more grippy, then when they press extra hard (as their hands are wet) to do that slide, it's much more likely to slide off of the counter, onto the floor.

Face ID doesn't solve the worlds problems, it's just an alternative biometric feature. One that I'm sure will have different advantages and disadvantages over what Touch ID has brought us in terms of use.

This just reminds me of those infomercials where they show someone hilariously messing up something super simple just so they can prove “aha. But there’s an easier way!” Man cracks eggs and somehow they end up all over the kitchen ceiling.

Reports from people that have actually handled the phone as well as the glass backed iPhone 8 say that it actually feels more grippy. And hell...if people are that worried about dropping their $1200 devices, they can get a case for them. Boom. Problem solved.

Grippy with dry hands...which isn't what we're talking about.

Yep, cases can help make a phone grippier and less prone to shattering when they hit the ground/floor. Any other revelations you have that everyone doesn't already know?

Creates problem, gets solution, replies with “duh”. Then why...what. I can’t even ‍♂️

plus there was the motorola atrix which was a good phone at the time.

I’m personally not worried about how FaceID will work. I feel confident in Apple’s ability. Also not scared of change and easily welcome new things. So I’m definitely excited to move on from past options and on to new.
