Macbook will be back when Apple puts their own chips in a laptop. Until then continue on with the Pro and Air yearly updates. Next year discontinue the old Air and lower prices of this current gen so that we can have a $999 base option (no, actually just so Apple can say they sell a laptop starting at an affordable $999). 2020 release the ultra light/battery efficient MacBook with in house chips. Oh and don't forget about that modular Mac Pro.

I'll hope at least. Sooner rather than later please, so they can pop up on the refurbished store quicker! Not crazy enough to buy a brand new Mac.

What's the point of the new MacBook Air 2018?

Is it really much different than the MacBook? It just has an additional USB-C port and TouchID.

It's not enough different to justify its existence when the MacBook's are already so thin.
First of all, USB-C ports doubles their duty as Thunderbolt 3, which in turn supports 5K and external GPU.

Having two ports as opposed to one can mean the difference of not having to carry a dongle.

And finally, additional 1.3" diagonal may not seem like a big deal but 1400×900 is much more comfortable on 13" than 12".

Do you have a source on that?

From the Apple website:

The new macbook air makes no sense. Why would you buy it over the low end macbook pro? They are basically the same price but with the pro you get a better screen and a better CPU and better integrated graphics. What does the air have as an advantage? Slightly better battery life and slightly thinner? I can't see many making that choice!

The air should start at 999. Then it would make sense as a budget computer.

I don't know who is buying macbooks!

Depends on spec and country. Around here it’ll cost you $257 more for a MBP in 512. If you’re already stretching your budget for the Air that’s a lot of additional money.

Is it really considering it’s a purchase which can easily last 3-5 years?

I presume most people paying over a grand for a laptop aren’t so budget restricted and rather want to buy the appropriate machine, but I could be wrong!

Look guys, the hardware announced today was a diddle. Not much going on.
Want to see something? Take a look at the clothing and jewels on Angela Ahrendts.

That's where Apple is right now. Get It?

It's a classic man, you can't get rid of a classic.
But it's not an Air, it's a bigger MacBook, that's all.

Where does it say the Pro has a better screen than the new Air?
It's right on Apple's own website. 2017 MBP has a P3 gamut and 500 nit screen. New Air doesn't. 2018 MBP has a P3 gamut, 500 nit screen and True Tone. New Air doesn't.

New 13" MBA makes no sense to me. $100 less than the base model 13" rMBP. It's .25 lbs lighter (barely anything), a less bright screen, and less powerful. Even if you don't need the power of the 13" rMBP, nothing stands out about the new MBA. A very confusing choice for consumers now. Before the MBA was so great because it was so much lighter and offered enough power for casual use. Now the line between it and the 13" rMBP is extremely blurry.

Jason Snell thinks this update happened because people were still buying the Air. But most if not all the reasons they were still buying it are missing from this device: no USB-A or SD Card; no Mag Safe; new keyboard. On the other hand if this was the plan all along why did it take 3+ years to put this out? There’s nothing radical or boundary pushing about the design. Very confusing.

I kind of agree with Steve Troughton Smith:

The first two MacBook Air designs were breakthrough products. Size/weight, then power/performance/design/battery life. Today's MacBook Air pushes no envelope, and merely exists as a concession to the market. Apple's portable flagship in this era is the iPad, make no mistake

I would get the Air if it also had USB A, discrete graphics, 512GB, 16 GB ram at the same dimensions and similar weight, all for $1500. That would be the perfect laptop for me. I hope it will happen next year.

Is it just me, or was an outright lie told during the keynote when she said they had quadrupled every pixel? The Tech Specs page states the new MacBook Air's resolution is 2560x1600, not 2880x1800, which would be exactly 4x the pixels of the 1440x900 2010-2017 13" MacBook Air.

Right? I heard that and realized it must be 2880 x 1800 which excited me because it had to mean updated resolutions on the Pro’s next year (I want 1440x900 HiDPI on the 13].

But the site says its only 2560 x 1600

I was also hoping it would mean a resolution bump on next year's 15" MacBook Pro. It's laughable that a 12.9" iPad Pro has more pixels and a higher refresh rate than a 15" MacBook Pro that costs twice as much or more.

They really should have done what they had t do to lower the price to $999-1100. You can get a refurb pro for this price.

The reason why people loved the air was that it was accessibly priced. They missed the point.

He said discrete graphics, I don’t think you can even dream about that in an Air!

Woah what the heck. You guys are right it’s $100 less than the base pro. Should I just pay for the pro?

Gen 2 keyboard = no thank you.

I thought maybe it isn’t so bad, but it was a nightmare and I returned mine back in 2016.

Perhaps they want to compete with Microsoft’s Surface Laptop. Very similar specs and pricing. The Surface Laptop was a runaway hit for MS. I have one and it an awesome machine.
