I'm a teacher and this will be life changing for me.

I can't carry my phone around in my classroom. Sure, it sits INSIDE my locked desk... what good is that for 88% of the day?! I miss a lot...

I have two kids in daycare, a husband, family, and friends like everyone else. I am SO EXCITED to be able to not miss an emergency for this reason... it'll be on my wrist at all times!

Won't use it much at home, maybe for exercising... but at work, game changer!

if its an emergency you would hear your phone ring a bunch of times and go check. you're a teacher, so you want to be checking your apple watch while you should be teaching students. what a great example you'll be setting to kids, checking messages/calls/emails while you should be educating students.

I find it funny that Apple just sold over 70 million iPhone 6 and 6 Plus's and now people are saying it's too much to reach inside their pockets and open their phones and that they'd rather see it on a 2" screen.

I think the Watch as an iPhone accessory is a fail, but as a piece of jewelry its ok. It's just way over priced for what it is and a solution to a problem that doesn't exist (in my opinion).

Why?

Messages:

I get messages from my wife all the time during the day. Some of them prompt a yes/no/dont know response. These are quick taps from the watch versus taking my phone out, unlocking it, bringing up the message and typing yes/no/dont know.

Apple even mentioned that the watch can analyze the messages you receive and generate smart replies on it's own.

e.g. "Do you want pizza or burgers?" - > watch generates "pizza" "burgers" "not sure" as smart replies to that text.

Emails:

I like to glance at every e-mail that comes in. If it's important and I need to respond only then would I take my phone out of my pocket.

Remote Camera:

Forget the selfie stick. Prop your phone up and use your watch as a remote view finder and pic snapper.

The list goes on and on.

remote camera.

prop up your phone somewhere, walk away to take the picture, and someone runs up and steals your phone and runs off. awesome. lol

I would assume in an emergency her family would call the office and the school's administrator would use the intercom or walk down to her classroom.

I still don't see enough of a benefit to invest in this G1 version. I would think that if all the reasons people are using to justify their purchase were valid, they would already own an Android watch with notifications.

exactly. if i was a family member i'd realize she's working and call the schools office instead if it was an emergency. i've been out of school for a long time (i'm 30). But if i ever saw a teacher checking emails or messages during class then no reason for me not to do the same. if they claim "its important" then whats not to say a student doesn't have important things in their lives as well.

especially now since they're going to support iOS soon. the moto 360 is a great looking smart watch that actually looks like a watch.

My FitBit Surge works now with the iPhone. It also has a always on screen, 7x24 HR monitor that tracks my sleep patterns, built in GPS, and I'm averaging four days between charges.

It must be nice to sit on your high horse from outside of the classroom.

Teachers are humans too. I'm an informal educator (I work for a science museum and deliver educational programming to classrooms throughout the area), and I have formerly been a regular classroom teacher. Just like everyone else around here, technology has brought the personal lives of teachers into their workspaces. The Apple Watch simply allows those teachers to deal with it in a less intrusive manner. It's not like we're suggesting that teachers ignore their entire class in order to stare at a watch.

In fact, I want an Apple Watch precisely so that I can glance at something on my wrist and then return the attention back to the students. In particular, I get texts and emails from coworkers about urgent matters while I'm in the middle of a lesson - this will allow me to screen if it is indeed urgent before I bother finding a time to respond.

I wouldn't touch the Moto 360. I tried one on, and it looks like a cheap, jewelry counter watch at Macy's with an lcd stuck on top.

That's what I like about the Apple Watch compared to the other smart watches on the market. They avoided the temptation to make it look like a cheap analogue watch, but they still managed to give it a beautiful design. I saw my uncle's Asus Zen the other day, and it still looks cheapish.

if its that urgent they would understand you're working and contact your employer if it was indeed an emergency.

the apple watch does look decent. but with such limited function if its not connected to your phone (i think it can only tell time if its not connected over wifi or bt) and the crappy battery life. seems like a nice first try but a fail. people will still buy it though.

It can also play music when not connected, but, yeah, it mostly requires an iPhone, which is always with me, anyways. The battery thing is a red herring. I had a Pebble and a fitness band, and both held several days of charge, but I still charged them every night with my phone. It's just easier to keep track of that way.

when i work out i don't bring my phone, only when i bike ride because i bring a bag. but if I'm going for a run. i leave it at home. even if it could just track runs by itself that would change things. but then the battery life would probably suck. i wonder what the battery life is like after you run a marathon and are tracking it and checking it often while its timing you/heartbeat/min per mile etc...

As opposed to a stranger running off with your phone as you give it to them to take a picture? :p

The list doesn't really go on that much. What you are mentioning with respect to messages and emails are probably the more important and desired functions.

However, I still contend that most of us send text messages that need more than simple replies. So yeah, when your wife asks a simple question you are all set. But when you need to reply to something other than a simple question you'll either have to dictate your response or take your phone out. The point is it leaves a lot to be desired.

For email scanning it's useful but again, when it's time to reply, back to your iPhone. I also question people saying I get tons of emails all day and I can use the Watch. That screen is pretty small and having to scan a ton of emails daily on it doesn't sound so great.

The watch may not be for you then but it doesn't mean everyone has the same needs. I bought a Pebble watch for the heck of it 2 months ago and I'm used to it being on my wrist all the time. Too bad I can't interact with the notifications like I can if I had a Apple watch.

Doctor here. I have a Pebble and the ability to look at incoming text messages quickly to see if they're important or not is huge. If I'm at a movie and I have to take my phone out every time it went off, I'd either piss off everyone around me or I'd miss something important. Being able to glance at my Pebble is fantastic.

Looking forward to the Apple Watch, though I think they're priced $100-$200 too much. That, and I'm flabbergasted at the $15,000 price tag for a gold one. Tim and Jony have gone insane.

So it is clear that you have no idea how the education field works. There are plenty of times during any given lesson where I could check my watch and my students wouldn't even notice. In those same moments trying to check my phone would be much more disruptive to class.

Also as the teacher I am the one who says that a student doesn't have important things in their lives as well. If a teacher was playing on Facebook and ignoring their kids thats a problem, glancing at a watch to see if an email or text is important is not a big deal.

oh so you say a student doesn't have important things in their lives? what a great teacher you are. and yes, checking an email in the middle of a lesson is a big deal. that can wait till after class is over.

I was in the navy, how would you like if i was checking emails while a plane was waiting to be checked out and repaired if needed because it had to go defend the freedom you have right now?

In the classroom they don't have things to do that are more important than the things I have given them to do. As I said generally speaking when I look at emails on my school issued iPad my students are oblivious because they are doing what is expected of them. Again I must repeat you just don't know anything about the education field.

You sound like a jerk. Judging people because they are excited for a new product.

Do you work every minute of your work day? Because I don't know too many people that do.

If the product isn't for you then take your ass out of a Apple Watch discussion.

you sound like you need the $17grand edition one. I have a bridge i can sell you as well if you're interested.

Yeah, running is about the last exercise that I'd do at any real length of time, so any of my workouts could have my watch close by. Looks like you'd need some kind of way to bring the iPhone.

Yeah I would hate to be able to see that urgent email from my principal or counselor about a student I have during class. Maybe you should try working in education before you try and explain what is and isn't important. On second thought you don't seem to understand education so maybe you shouldn't try it.

I was too busy defending the freedom you enjoy everyday.

Get a text message on your Apple Watch that you want to reply to via typing without using your iPhone? Can't. Ditto with emails.

Can't make phone calls. What happens if you go for a run and have an emergency but don't have your phone with you?

Ultimately I don't see this product answering the 'why' question for consumers that was very obvious with both the iPhone and iPad. I predict lukewarm sales. And yes, I know people doubted the iPhone and iPad too. I don't think that's reason to not doubt the Apple Watch.

This is what our society has come to. Paying over $350 for a small screen on your wrist so you don't have to pull out your phone to check a notification that you probably don't give a crap about anyway. I can't wait to see people walking around with these things constantly checking their wrists and sending doodles to one another. Its all just silly.
