I wonder if/when the COVID-19 issues are over and people no longer have to wear face masks will most of the Touch-ID folks no longer be so in favor of it vs. Face-ID?

I can't speak for everyone, but I still will be.

Face ID just isn't reliable. I feel like, more often than not, I'm changing the way I'm handling or looking at my phone to try to get it to unlock. Sometimes my face is "too close" and it just won't work. Or I just woke up and my eyes aren't "open enough." Or I have something occluding part of my face while I'm trying to unlock. Or my phone is on my desk and I have to lift it to unlock it. Too many times it sees "false" face detections while I'm carrying my phone in my hand, and burns through the number of allowed attempts so that I'm forced to enter my passcode.

I never had these problems with Touch ID. It always felt like it "just worked". In the morning, on my desk, in my hand...no matter what, it just worked.

You know what. I guess I'm a bit spoiled, so my views are probably skewed a little bit.

I always had Touch ID, but then my brother gave me his old Apple Watch. I never even knew I wanted an Apple Watch, but I told him I'd give it a shot. I ended up loving it. Then I wanted to get a new iPhone with an OLED screen as well, and that's when I realized the iPhone 12 mini existed. Wow, this phone is the PERFECT size for me. The screen is large yet the device itself is even smaller than my SE2. So in reality, I never had to deal with Face-ID issues during the whole pandemic and now that I have an Apple Watch, it unlocks easily even when I wear a mask, so I guess I got lucky.

Anyways, the 12 mini is my first Face ID phone and I've been so impressed with it that I don't miss Touch ID at all. Touch ID wasn't as seamless for me.

Wow, I haven't had any of these problems. I wonder if you need to recalibrate.

I dealt with these issues across two iPhone X and a 12 mini. I've had these problems since I got a launch day iPhone X, had it replaced by Apple about a year later, then upgraded to the 12 mini last year. I'll concede that it's less frequent of a problem with the 12 mini, but it's still nowhere near as convenient and reliable as Touch ID.

I have an iPad Pro 10.5" (2017 model), the last model that still has Touch ID. Every time I use it, I remember how much more convenient Touch ID is. As much as I want the newer tech in a new iPad Pro, I really don't want to lose that Touch ID.

Face ID works pretty well for me when I don’t have a mask on my face but I don’t think COVID is going anywhere, it’s going to become endemic now, so I would prefer to have Touch ID back and lose the notch personally.

I was totally the opposite. I couldn’t wait to get rid of my Touch ID iPad after having a Face ID iPhone. Face ID for both and it’s much better, Touch ID is so inconvenient.

Same here, absolutely love Face ID, 100% success rate, can never go back to Touch ID, can’t wait till macs get Face ID, won’t be buying another Mac until they add it, had enough of always having to re enter my fingerprint. 🤦‍♂️😡

Same here, launch day pickup once the Face ID iPads came out. 😂

Pull your 😷 down for 1 second, problem solved. 😁

It’s still a pain to deal with. I guess I will find out if it’s possible for me to give up the Face ID when I start messing with the new Pixel this week.
Then back to Face ID when the iPhone 13 comes out. 😂

Why do you guys hate options?

Having both, face recognition + fingerprint scanning, on one device isn't some revolutionary idea. You could prefer to use one option and turn the other one off.

There is no need to get rid of either option...just add both!

Why eschew convenience for preference? Maybe one is technologically superior (FaceID, in this case), but why not give someone else the option that they prefer. Especially when Apple has already proven that they can implement it really elegantly into their devices (TouchID in the Home Button).

I see no reason to get the 13 when I have a 12 Pro Max. The main reasons I upgraded from my XS Max to the 12 Pro Max were battery life and 5G. Even on the worst day when the beta was killing my battery my 12 Pro Max got more than twice the longevity my XS Max did. I was lucky to get 3 1/2 hours from the XS Max, my 12 Pro Max averages 12, and I have T-Mobile so the 12 Pro Max supports all of their 5G bands.

I’m either going to go to Pixel for a year or return the Pixel and keep my 12 Pro Max for another year.

Would be great to just have the option to set up both and use whichever one is more convenient at the time.

Both have their advantages but personally I'd like both. If I had to pick only one I'd go with TouchID.

FaceID can be temperamental. There are times when I just want to do something quickly at arms reach when I'm working without having to bring the phone a lot closer to unlock.

Also upgraded from a xs max, went from 6-7 hours usage to 10-11 hours, the battery life on the 12 pro max is awesome.

Must be nice to have gotten good life like that from the XS Max. I got about half that with the same games I play now.

Let’s hope the future iPhones have two types of way to unlock. I’ve got a fingerprint reader on my iPad Air 4 and it’s nice to have, especially in an era of mask wearing. I do find it funny that some seem to think fingerprint readers are some how out of date when they are a very valid way of security authentication in many applications besides phones.

FaceID is so much better than TouchID.

Maybe it's because I've always had TouchID and only recently bought an iPhone 12 mini, but FaceID kicks TouchID's butt.

I love just looking at my phone to unlock it. It's like magic. With touch ID, I would have to place my finger on a certain area of the screen where as with FaceID, I just need to LOOK at the screen and it's ready to go.

In fact, FaceID is so fast for me, I just pick up my phone and swipe up without even thinking about it. That seems way more convenient than picking up my phone, placing my thumb in a certain spot and waiting for it to unlock, then swiping up. Even if it's VERY FAST, you can't simply raise the phone and swipe up immediately as you would have to be still for a second or so, then swipe up.

If Apple is planning on going back to TouchID, I'm going to be very sad. FaceID is high-tech futuristic stuff and I've only had it fail a few times since I got my iPhone 12 mini. Meanwhile, when I had TouchID, it would fail if my hands were too sweaty or wet, or if there was too many fingerprints on the button and I had to constantly keep it clean and even then, it would fail to recognize my finger sometimes.

Everytime I pick up my iPhone 12 mini, I feel like I'm living in the future. It amazes me every single time still. Especially how the notifications just pop open when my eyes lock onto the phone. It's the one thing Apple has that ACTUALLY feels like magic.

If they DO end up putting a fingerprint scanner back into the iPhone, I hope they keep FaceID as an option and the fingerprint scanner as a secondary option. Another fingerprint scanner would be going backwards in my opinion.

I have not gotten to use face ID yet, but considering all but one of Apple’s iPhone uses face ID, I’ve pretty much decided it’s mandatory for my next one, is it just sounds so much less annoying than touch ID. Touch ID frequently doesn’t work, doesn’t work if your hands are just slightly wet from having washed them or whatever. It’s really a pain. Yes, Face ID is screwed up my masks. But it seems like what’s the big deal just pull the mask down while holding your breath for a few seconds, and most of the time I’m not using it outside anyway.

Testimonials about Face ID being flawless and Touch ID a pain, and testimonials about Touch ID being flawless and Face ID a pain—just goes round and round. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe they’re just different and work better/worse for different people.

Exactly! I'm sick of people drawing a line in the sand between FaceID & TouchID.

It is completely logical to prefer one over the other, but utterly absurd to want that one of them be removed and irrevocably replaced.

The real thing we should be demanding as consumers is both, with the option to use either depending on what we prefer (or even both at the same time for extra security).
