From a height of about 3 feet. This is my third day using a specced out 15" that I've literally waited years to buy.

So I have a laptop backpack that has both a top and side zipper for quick removal. Was leaving a cafe with the Mac in my bag and forgot the side was unzipped. As I turned and stood up I heard a loudass metallic clatter behind me -- I thought I had knocked over a sign or something. Everyone in the cafe turned to stare -- I was genuinely confused until a waiter meekly told me "Sorry sir, I think you dropped your computer."

F%%%. The laptop had launched out of my backpack with quite some torque and landed hard on the right corner before coming to a rest upside down. I opened the lid... and yes, it turned on. There's now a nice fat bite out of the chassis and a few scuffs on the lid. The body seams near the impact have spread oh-so-sightly, and the location of impact has deformed a few mm meaning the lid no longer closes perfectly flush. But other than that everything seems fine. I swear this thing is like a slab of granite. Very well-built.

But honestly. I don't deserve nice things.

This thread needs a "Warning: Graphic Content"!

I'm so sorry OP. Solution wise, I guess you could sell it and take the hit and buy another, or go to the Genius Bar for a quote on a screen and top case replacement. You never know, they may take pity on you and knock a bit off the price?

Yikes, that sucks

I'm thinking I might want to insure mine for collision after looking at this. (they have no-fault collision for these, no? Don't know anything about this.....)

I'm going to hit up the Genius Bar tomorrow and see what they quote me for a case replacement, just for kicks. Will let you all know. But honestly will probably just live with the damage. Kind of liberating now that I don't have to worry about keeping it perfect ;)

If you bought the MBP on a credit card, you may be covered by insurance. likely will be an expensive repair for basically cosmetic damage as will need new top case and and display (lid assy).

You could always see if a hard case will still fit. Sorry for your bad luck, on such a long awaited item.

I'm really sorry for you. That sucks big time. Fingers crossed that the Genius Bar makes you a good price for the repair out of pity or something.

man that sucks. happened to me like 6 years ago, but on the street ... thing still chugged away!

I am sorry to see that happened. The very same thing had happened to me once with the side zipper backpack. I forgot to close mine and my Mac flew out and landed on the floor when I picked up the backpack. But, it was my company provided laptop I didn't too bad. However, I changed the backpack since the incident to avoid that from happening again. So, the lesson learned is: don't buy or use the side zipper backpack for laptop. Accident will happen.

I don't think insurance (whether it be home, credit card or something else) covers cosmetic damage. What I definitely know is that my insurance has never covered cosmetic.

On a positive mate, you can take the kid gloves off and not worry about keeping it pristine, same happened to my iPad, and truth be told it feels good to treat it like a tool now and not worry about the a scratch....

You can always looks at getting replacement parts a years down the the track from eBay etc.....once a few more version come out they will be cheap.

Until such time, use that sucker and don't worry about babying it!!!

You may be able to get one of those case/skins that would cover the damage (and protect it from any further).

Sucks that it happened. It'd be nice if things were made to be damage-resistant.

I got acid indigestion looking at those photos BUT all is not lost. As many have said it's superficial damage and it's made to be used. Get stuck in and enjoy!

If you can - house insurance cover?

Damn dude, seeing that picture literally felt like someone punched me in the gut, can't imagine the feeling you went through when it happened. Sorry to hear about that man, but look at the bright side, it's still working, and you still have an awesome computer to use!

Put a case on it. I can't imagine having a $2,000+ laptop without any case. Accidents are bound to happen.

To make you feel better, I dropped my ThinkPad only 3 days after buying it, and a corner of the (hard plastic) case went flying. It had a roll cage underneath and otherwise it was fine. I used it for 5 more years. Best of luck with yours!
